One of my Edmonton friends had someone from the bw team come into the coffee shop he works at the morning of launch day. He told them about my complaining about Emily Wong's death. The response they had in defense of her twitter snuff was that ME3 was pretty much Hamlet the videogame.

Yes, it is. It's at least as bad as the ending itself in my opinion.

It's even more annoying that they considered her important enough to bring (a pretty crap example of i might add) closure to her character yet as others have pointed out replace her with someone completely new and who had zero relevance in the first two games.

(It's the Details link)

As a rule, I certainly don't want to see any more of this kind of out-of-band communication (the iPad app and whatnot). In interest of fairness, though, this wasn't A) specifically about Wong nor B) a planned media campaign exposition. It was someone asking a question (that admittedly could maybe have answered in the game itself, on the wall or a news cast or whatever).

I ....... don't know what to say except this:

Awesome.  I know I'm staring at the screen now with the same look on my face I had two weeks ago when I "won" the game.  No presence or visibility in the game.  Just... twitter.

For the love of all that's lovable, someone get the hipsters out of the design department.

Twitter? We're supposed to find out what happens in the game from TWITTER? You have got to be ****TING me.

Someone lend me a few hands, I only got two for a facepalm.

Twitter? Fool on me for thinking I got a complete game (crap ending or not, former for me)...

Emily Wong got "twittered", the Citadel got "twittered". You got to be "twitting" me...

I actually cried when I heard of her death. It was sad. Necessary in some respects, but sad. Such a death could not have been pulled off better in game, or in book, or comic, or short video. If she were to go down, that was how it should have happened. I just wish she could have lived. Rather have her on my ship than Allers any day.

Uggghhhh. What's the bet that the next game is you paying for exclusive access for a Twitter feed where you get to see everything unfold in a stream of Twitter updates. In REAL TIME TOO WOAH TECHNOLOGY IS SUPER

Honestly, she died in far more a badass way than Shepard in some respects. I wouldn't knock it.

I'm learning just now of the Wong thing on Twitter. Christ. Yeah, I'd say that doing that and then implementing the Chobot character sounds like... well, just a bad idea story-wise.

Yes, but she died in a way that wasn't even mentioned in the game. That's the problem, and it's a rather big one. Characters should not be killed via outside means like Twitter.

I wondered what happened to Emily Wong while I was playing ME3 so I looked it up on the wiki. Found out that she died and wondered when that happened in the game. Thought it might have been in one of the messages in my terminal or something.

Then I saw that it happened on Twitter and I was like : |.

It won't be long before you will be getting in-game prompts such as "Emily Wong has updated her CrapBook status", forcing you to leave the game to find out what is going on.

^^ I'm hoping that is a joke, but I think it will happen sooner or later.

On a more serious note the cost of the game is (in the U.K. at least) just about a day's wages for a low income worker. It is unacceptable that ANY material concerning the story should not be on the game discs. (I know that ****ter and CrapBook are free atm - but that can change - also many people around the world play without internet connections and should not be punished for doing so.

Interesting, I'd missed the bit about the Citadel.

That much at least you'd think would earn a place in the game. Killing off a backround character via twitter is tacky, but explaining an important plot point? COME ON.

All of the information that is posted on sites like Twitter and Facebook regarding Emily Wong and the fate of the Citadel Defense Force should have also been posted here on BSN for those who don't use either of these sites.
It shouldn't be hard to do and afterall these are Biowares own forums why not keep the info here too so that everyone is kept up to date.

I don't actually ****, personally. I can appreciate the site's utility, but find it's format is grating.

...and I can assure you I'm very far from alone in that opinion.

Yep. Besides, twitter's not really that popular in Europe. Or eastern Europe at last.

It shouldn't be hard for them to include it in the bloody game either, for crying out loud. I didn't haunt these forums until I was faced with the ending, and Twitter/Facebook...  Not where I look for game content when playing, not even when not playing.

Seriously?  Did they compare Shakespeare's "play within a play" to twitter?

I'm also one of those people who refuses to get a twitter or facebook account, because I think they're ridiculous.  The idea that twitter as a viable story-telling medium is ludicrous.

The writing out of characters via Twitter is either poor writing or just lazy. Yes I am bitter that Bioware undid all of the citadel defense force via Twitter.

Agree.

Twitter = home of lazy text speak. Should not have to check it or face book or anything else to find out the fate of characters.

Wong should have been able to join you on the normandy
