I've seen so many posts where people say they hate the graphics of DA:O, that the characters are stiff, the voiceacting is bad and it just looks awful.  Maybe it's cause I don't have the best graphics card out there but I really love how this game looks and feels.  I like how the characters look and enjoy the nice sound as they all draw their swords and run into battle.  So far I've been very impressed with it all. Sure it could probably look better but I think the style fits the mood perfectly.  It looks better than NWN2, maybe not as good as Oblivion but I'm enjoying it more than Oblivion.  I love how Duncan looks while talking to us with the big bonfire in the background.

Maybe it's because this game was started so long ago. Heck, six years ago this would've been the best out there. I'm sure they updated it but maybe that's why people think it looks dated or maybe they just went with a different look. Let's face it WoW has bad graphics but people would rather play it than any other mmo, because they can run it on their pc well and because it is very immersive and the style fits the game.

So far my ONLY complaints are that I don't like the towns too much.  Now I have only been to the first camp and I'm headed to my first small town after getting Morrigan so maybe it'll change but what I don't like is that it doesnt' sound like a town.  I loved how in BG2 when you entered a town you could hear the town, people were yelling, banging pots, you could hear people walking, running, shouting, screaming, and every other possible sound a city had to offer but the main camp in DA:O sounded kinda bland.  Also I hope more NPC's wonder around and don't just all stand there waiting on me to come to them.  I loved all the little children in BG2. "Momma said elves have the clap, do you have the clap elf lady?" lmao.  (Not sure how it went but it was something like that, Lol.)

Anyway I've played Mass Effect and Im really enjoying DA alot more.  Maybe it's because I just don't care for fps much no matter how much rpg is in them.  I liked their dialogue trees but I'm actually more into this story than Mass Effects (Please Note that I have not played Mass Effect more than 1/3 through so I cant' make a full opinion based off of that yet, but so far from what I've seen of the two I prefer DA:O)

So what do you'll think?  Great graphics, ugly graphics? somewhere in between graphics?

I think they're great and I'm loving ever second of my time in Dragon Age, Thank you Bioware for doing it once again : )

Remember back when games were this good and nobody nit-picked about any of the small things?  Hehe, I can remember when game developers didn't release patches.  What you bought was what you got, things have changed though, some for the better and some for the worse.  I think people are so critical because Bioware just keeps raising everyone's expectations.  So far they have put out nothing but Grade A games.  Heck, they could probably make The Quiet Game Online and it'd be a hit Lol.  :P

The graphics would be flawless if the game had come out two years ago, but things have improved since then.

DA:O is not really a game that requires much fancy graphics to be enjoyable, for me what is important in these games, is a great story, and I think the game delivered that. Even with that said, I do wish the textures were a little better, some of them are pretty low res, which is a shame.

The art direction is solid, so are the character models themselves. Environments, though, are pretty lacking, and the combat run animation is horrendous.

Graphics are overrated. . .

Ski free is more fun then most "next-gen" games that come out these days.

Then again, Ski free is awesome. ;)

Because the graphics really aren't very good. They are also not so bad that you feel totally cheated either. It's the end of 2009 and the graphics of say Oblivion which came out years ago is much better. Some people would say the graphics are average and some below average. I think it would be hard to say that the graphics are much better than that even if you love the game. I realize that graphics aren't the #1 concern in an RPG and therefor again they don't ruin the experience here. However, if folks expected better I cannot say I would blame them.

You also mentioned audio in your post which of course is different than people's thoughts on the graphics. Personally I found the dialog to be excellently voiced and I really don't have any complaint there at all. To go back to my Oblivion example, that game reused voice actors which in some cases created a very strange effect. I cannot say the same here and overall DAO does an excellent job on this. I do wish the main character was voiced in dialog and not just in the inane 'comments' made when you ask him to open something.

They use low ress textures, using a player made modification that ups the texture quality myself, and it makes the game much more pretty to look at, it would be nice though if the devs decided to make it an option to switch between texture quality due to our PCs can handle alot more than what various consoles in general are cabable of mustering.

Most of the other Bioware games and alot of different game companies has made it in a way so you can switch betwen good and bad textures... would like to run it at 4096 quality.. to bad alot of the bioware textures seem to be down at 256... so some nerd, meant in a good way, made it posible to add a modification where he had sharpened it all up to standard 2048 and gave a posibility to let it go at 4096 as well which does grant quite alot to the quality of graphics if you look it up.

Would like bioware spending a bit time on doing it so you don't actually have to find the files elsewhere for this specific one though.

There's definately a lot of confusion about the fact that why some (me included) think that DA graphics are sub par. Games are mainly for the consoles these days and their power is capped the certain point. Resolution, texture size, shaders ect ect can't be improved forever with same old hardware. Xbox 360 was released November 22, 2005. That's a damn long time if you compared it to the top end PC today. Best looking PC game, Crysis was released 2 years ago. This means we reached top end graphics 2 years ago (of course no computer back then could run Crysis at 60 fps on highest details but still games was beautiful even with bit lower settings).

Because of long development time, Dragon Age have ok quality 2007 graphics. It means it ain't top end of 2007 graphics like Crysis, but definately not worst either. Art direction is some areas are lacking too. To get fair comparison, play Dragon Age and then change something like Assassins Creed 2. Probably now you can see the difference (even on consoles), why some think that Dragon Age graphics are sub par.

The textures are pretty low quality. Look at the ground at your feet or the textures of the nearby walls when get within 10 feet. You can definitely live with it, but there's no doubt it looks dated. Saying it's limited by the consoles isn't entirely correct, because 1) the game was a PC exclusive not long ago and 2) it's primarily console reviewers who are noting the dated graphics.

The high texture mods out there do make the game look better but they come with their share of graphical glitches.

Every other neutral NPC has Jowan's voice actor if you haven't noticed...

I partially agree. I sometimes cannot understand the complaints about the graphics. There are fine details, designs and all in all the intention of creating natural, realistic environments is very nice. However, I have come to find that this intention is not always successful or enough, and that the look sometimes ends up dreadfully sterile and lifeless. I also think they looked too much at the LotR-movies for inspiration and the result feels something like an imitation instead of something genuine.
Just my opinion.

I like DA:O's graphic. Yep, it's not Assassin's Creed but graphic are not the focus of CRPG and for the standard of those game they are quite good. As far as I know, they have decided that the game should run on dated systems too being a single player computer game. So it's difficult to have both things I suppose.

Comes down to what you expect/look for in a game. Development of graphics takes resources from other things as well as a degree of "planning ahead" as technology doesn't stay still. Whilst the graphics are not brilliant the most important thing to me is the Interface. Oblivion failed totally in this regard being based on console controls rather than the PC input devices. Dragon Age suceeds very well on PC but I cannot comment on console versions. Also important to me is the ability to play without having to have the lastest, meanest gaming rig. Sure some people have money to burn keeping their systems up to date but the majority of people do not. Graphics have never made a game and I have found that too often concentration on the graphical aspects provides a "wow" factor for a short while but you invariably find the rest of the game lacking.

It would be interesting for people complaining about the graphics to state what they are running on and compare it to todays "average" computer.

I don't have any problems with the graphics, per say, but I do have a problem with BioWare being incapable of creating aesthetically pleasing armor sets and weapons, 99% of the stuff in this game looks like rubbish...

Look at what this guy did: http://social.biowar...m/project/1065/
All he did was retexture the armor and add another helmet (also retextured) and that looks better than everything in the damn game, I doubt it even took hiim that long to do..

The only thing I find lacking graphically are the spell effects..... when I've got blizzard and tempest doubled up I wanna see the carnage and all I get is mist and a few little sparks

The lip-syncing when Leliana goes into song is laughable at best. That whole scene is cringeworthy, but her face whilst singing just makes me pity the poor soul who wasted his time.

For the most part I find the graphics adequate, though not cutting edge by any means. Gameplay > graphics anyway.

I think the graphics in this game are rather bad; some of the textures are definitely of very low quality; but the worst thing is how terribly stiff all of the animations are (which is a big downside in a game that is supposed to convey a wide range of human emotions).

All of this does not really matter - it would matter in any other type of game perhaps, but when it comes to rpg, it's the story first and the gameplay second that I care about, and pretty graphics are just an extra.

Besides, the plus side of Dragon Age's definitely low quality graphics, is that my old pc can actually run this game at pretty high settings. I was amazed.

Find the graphics ok, a bit let down by lack of water movement when you run in it, but its not a game breaker, would be good to have the option to go higher graphically. One thing is certain, its preferable to have it as is rather than have the game crashing as it eats all the PC's resources.

Meh, low spec laptop so I'm delighted by the graphical performance of the game.

Looks better than NWN2, runs better than NWN2 (and the Witcher which uses the same engine), plays better than NWN2.

You see, it's hard to make typical RPG games to become good with graphics because i think that Typical RPG games use require more computer resources to operate. Not like action games and FPS where computation is minimal that's why they can focus on aesthetics much.

Well, i think... Because RPG games usually have tons of checks to do then damage computed miss chance, crit chance, save checks etc. etc etc. But FPS and Action games are just if the target icon is in line with the creature - 10 damage or so.... See the difference?

First let me say I'd rather have the focus be more on the gameplay and story rather than the graphics being the primary focus. I'd rather have a great game that isn't as pretty than a pretty game that isn't very good.

That being said, the graphics that come with the game aren't too bad with everything maxed out. (I'm on a pretty nice PC). They don't blow me away like some places in Oblivion do, but still, not bad. However, once you get the all of the latest HD Textures out there applied, the game really starts to look beautiful.

I still don't go stand on the beach and watch the sunset like I would occasionally do in Oblivion, but with these new textures, the graphics really start to pop.

I cant find a comment on people who care that much about graphics in a roleplaying game that is nice enough to write it down. Seriously, if you play games for graphics, go back to your shallow shooters already.

Good roleplaying games contain about ten times more playtime than shooters. Naturally, you cant spend ten times more money on the creation of these graphics - because games always cost around 50 dollars or euros, no matter if its a shooter or a roleplaying game.

The only thing that I really dont like that much about Dragon Age is the fact its not an open world. Having played a MMO, I am so used to open worlds now.

My graphics complaint doesn't involve the merits of the graphics as much as the quality you get for the PC power. I have a laptop that exceeds the minreqs, but not by much. But because of certain spell effects, animations, environmental design, I have to turn the settings all the way down to get smooth gameplay all the way through. Compare this to certain other games (Oblivion, FO3), I am able to play at higher settings. Essentially, DA:O gives me less graphics per punch than a standard I am accustomed to.

I could play with a higher texture setting if there were options for certain graphical effects (options I expect in a PC game) such as simple fogs, turning off transparency, etc. But since they decided to give us absolutely no ability to graphics tweak - I'm stuck on low textures or every maps that involves smoke or trees chunks my game. It sucks

The environments, animations, characters, and cut-scenes are all great. For a game with this scope and size, the graphics are superb.

The problem with open worlds are, well i think its the developer's fault, they lack in depth story. Fallout 3 and Oblivion are like this for me. It's a big hack n slash action free roam game!
