Still, intelligent design by either a previous cycle or the Reapers themselves can be used to avoid questions on biology.
Wait, you're willing to apply "intelligent design" to a video-game? That pseudo-scientific "theory" is already a blight on the scientific community in real-life, we don't need that crap in-game, unless the creators of the game decided to put it in the game.
But really, the idea that the reapers "intelligently designed" the quarians (or all life in the current cycle) is completely dumb and doesn't make sense at all. That idea is even worse than the space-magic we already have in the current horrible endings.

Because it is some nerdy Talimancer's twisted fantasy. I think they handled her face really well in ME3.
A hastly photoshoped stockphoto of a human is not exactly handling things well If you ask me. If they would use a human as template, why not use her voice actress? And why not remove that human hair. And where was this photo taken?
Before I knew it was stock I still was like "w-t-f? why is she human" when I saw the picture in-game.

Quarians look very similar to humans. The face isn't human enough.

2nd'd. To me it seems like alien-ness for the sake of it.
NEWSFLASH: Quarians ARE aliens. So the more alien they look, the better. It's extremely dumb when aliens look exactly like humans.
I can accept ONE alien race to look almost exactly like humans (asari) but TWO races that look exactly like humans? No, that's just incredibly unrealistic and uncreative.
is it really beyond the realm of your imagination to imagine another species in the galaxy that resembles human beings?
alien doesn't mean anything in the mass effect galaxy. jesus christ.

To all the people saying "Too human", have you ever seen an Asari before? Guess not.
The difference is that the Asari don't have hair and ears and they're mono-gendered (only females), which still makes them somewhat different from humans.
That fanart with the human in the enviro-suit is just bad. The art isn't bad, but the design is bad. It's just a little human girl in an enviro-suit with some circuit-wires on her forehead.
And like I said before, ONE human-like alien race in Mass Effect is already bad enough. We don't need TWO human-like alien races. That would make the Mass Effect universe even worse than it already is.

Now while the fan art on the first page is great in itself (both in quality and design), I wouldn't have been satisfied with it. I think it's just trying way too hard to be alien and weird. Not every alien needs horns on their heads or funky ears.

Qurians are ALIENS and not just aliens, they're aliens with a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT DNA!
If you want your fiction to be somewhat realistic, then you need to accept the fact that aliens will look completely different than humans. There is absolutely no way that somewhere in the galaxy another alien race evolved EXACTLY the same way as humans did. That's just nearly impossible and extremely unlikely.
There is nothing "cool" about having an alien species that looks exactly like humans. It's dumb, unrealistic and uncreative.

No, it's not trying hard enough to be alien and weird. If Mass Effect was realistic (which it isn't), than all aliens should look nothing like humans at all. Every alien should look completely and totally different. Some aliens will look extremely scary and f*cked up, while other aliens might look extremely weird but also really beautiful.
The fact that we already have the asari running around our Mass Effect universe is already bad enough. But one human-like alien race I can handle. But turning the quarians into human clones? That's just uncreative and stupid.

do you even know what the word alien means? evidently not.
have you ever encountered a creature that has a COMPLETELY DNA? thought not.
why does realistic fiction have to assume that other species of sentient beings would be radically different to humans? that just suggests to me you are completely illiterate & have only experience hollywood forms of sci-fi in which aliens are generally depicted as weird monsters.
uncreative? unrealistic? what the eff does this mean? nothing. you people chuck these words around, but you clearly lack any discernible or useful aesthetics to base them on.

In game, Tali mentions that plants on Rannoch used large animals, including Quarians, to spread their seeds, like how some Earth plants do. For some reason, this made me think they'd be furry or something.
