The first 20 minutes of Demon Souls for the PS3 had more interesting story than dragon age. Sadly however after the first 20 minutes most of the story wasn't there anymore. That game has beautiful Graphics far superior than dragon age as well. Soooooo defend Dragon Ages amazing graphics all you want but there's probably a reason I am in the IMINT and SIGINT field of work and you are not. I guess its because I can see the bull**** others can't.

On an off note is it just me or do I find it odd that this forum says No Spoilers Allowed, and yet one of the sticky threads has spoilers?

Not large spoilers though really are they?

Sorry to all those butthurt over my thread, I just expect the very best from Bioware. When Bioware make accusations such as "DA:O is the spiritual successor to Baldurs Gate" and its an "Epic tale of Dark Fantasy" and it is not anywhere close to that then I just can't help but be utterly let down by this game. So please stay tuned for my next tread "An Epic Fail of Dark Fantasy" I shall have a much more solid argument so that the blind brown nosers of bioware can open their eyes a little.

I did a search for a PS1 game I had always wanted to try, Parasite Eve, and that's a good picture I found to compare to one of the DAO pics I found.

Anyway to call an end to this thread Planescape Torment is the best roleplaying game ever made. This my chaps is a true fact.

I dunno - I'll have to give it a 4th try, but I simply have been unable to get into PST.  Granted, it took 5-6 tries before I finished the NWN OC ... but, hey, I still dislike that game, so ...

I'm not even a big Ultima fan, but I think the Ultima series may very well deserve best CRPG, if not best video game RPG.

I agree somewhat with the OP, although I love DAO.

A lot of people are saying, "It's a single player game, does not matter about class balance", to me at least, it does matter.

The contrasts between mages and other classes in terms of combat power is so high that you no longer need to be picking your companions based on any tactical aspects. Just get your three mages game going all the way through.

Other than this, I think DAO is a good game.

One final note ... this game taunts you with Cameos like if all else fails go for the eyes tip screen and Gaxkang thanks for the subtles in reminding me how much better BG is than DA:O

Agreed Planescape Torment is by far an almost perfect game and by far is the best RPG I've ever played to date.

Any of the Terry Brooks books, Lord of the Rings, a few other authors.

I know I'm a member of a minority here, but I find the LotR books to be borderline unreadable.

Terry Brooks is hit or miss for me - the Knight of the Word stuff was ok.

Might I suggest some Glenn Cook, the Black Company series, for those who like more militaristic fantasy -
and the Myth series by the recently departed Robert Asprin for those who like some humor and the road movie schtick.

I actually enjoyed the Dragon Age novels as well.

In game development, there are a lot of limitations and constraints. While graphics may look gorgeous on one game, doesn't mean the exact hi-res texture or model can work on others, even if they are on the same platform. It has to do with a lot of things, game engine efficiency, how big of an environment the game is drawing, how many characters running at the same time on screen, how complicated gameplay is, how complex the character models are, how much animation is involved, how much visual effects, how well the hardware is running it, how well the artists and technical engineer utilize the assets and budget? There are a lot of things to consider. Just like in DA:O's character stat. You are only give a certain amount of points on your whole playthrough. While you may want a lot of strength and dex and con and cunning and...basically max on everything, you can't unfortunately. Same thing goes to a game development. When they design it, every part involve some budget. If they need better textures, they may need to cut some on animation or polygon counts or variety on character models. If they want the art to look very detail and complex, they may need to simplify gameplay or have much less enemies on screen, or need a very enclosed environment, or need to change the game design a lot. If they are already at their limits, then they may be forced to go for cheap solution to achieve more balance (aka. the transparent hair). Its not that they can't fix those hair or the lower-res textures on some areas. But if they do, something else has to go, as they don't have the time & money to do everything they want to be done. With that said, Bioware built the game according to the way they see the most efficient, with their time, money, talent, and game engine to fit the 'balance' they see best to get the gameplay they want to achieve. If they put in more time, sure they may be able to fix something, but something else may have to go too. And the more time they spend on development, the more money they need to spend, and possibly less profit they will make. So, it would be nice to see all the little flaws being fixed. But in reality, it can't be achieved in the ways you want. Just like in DA:O, you can't max out all the stat on your character. There is always some give & take.

"grotesque graphical flaws"
And you have been playing BG for years? Why are you complaining? Sounds like you need a new video card bro, don't flame because you don't know specs :/
Are you overheating? DEFINE graphical flaw, wtf is that? You mean video tearing? Texture gapping? What?
Gawd I can't stand these trolls who don't define problems to help others help them.
Oh, and Maker forbid I ask you who says, "the most sick party I can make is 3 mage and a theif"

Whilst on the subject of books. I just realized I not only don't read a lot but am a massive fan of Forgotten Realms. I liked most of the books Salvatore wrote with his Drizzt Do'urden drow and aside from that I found Joe Abercrombie's First Law trilogy to be awesome.

Mostly I stick to old British crime books that are based around or are true stories. I find it interesting how old cons were pulled off and what not.

For someone who prides himself on his SIGINT and IMINT work, and his ability to notice bull****, I would think you'd have a better grasp on the implied distinction between game spoilers and novel spoilers.

Stay away from The Worm Orobouros, then.

...

You should also stay away from the Gor novels, and not just due to subject matter.  The language is... well, odd.  As in, out of everyone I know (including some people so enraptures with the world of Gor that they literally attempt to live by it's tenets IRL), I am the only person who can stand the style of Norman's writing.

BG1 > BG 2 by far. I was never a fan clicking giant towns or forts on an area map and then being there.

I hate all you console people and shoddy PC users claiming these graphics are somehow bad...

They are downright amazing on my rig...

1. Only way to get enough money in the game to get a lot of the great items of the game is to be a Dwarf Nobel, and sell everything to Gorim. Sure if you play on normal or casual you save money but I'm not looking for easy. Lets not forget its MORE expensive to create a potion than it is to buy one (WTF).

This is wrong. Period. The money flows just fine if you craft potions using components. its Way less expensive. I've done two play throughs one crafting them and one buying them. I was much richer crafting them.

You likely find the LoTR books borderline unreadable because they are...

Tolkien was NOT a good story teller.  He was a very good linguist and told an OK story. But he had no sense of pace, when to go on an aside or tangent or flashback, and no idea whatsoever how revolting people being overly 'fond' of people that resemble small children really are...

Baldur's Gate was a piece of ****.

Baldur's Gate 2 was a giant piece of failure.

PlaneScape: Torment was the least game of any game I've ever played.

DAO > everything else atm.

It's worthy of being called NWN2. [smilie]http://i.somethingawful.com/forumsystem/emoticons/emot-smug.gif[/smilie]

The only game of Bioware's that I would rate a 9 would be Mass Effect. Both BG and BG2 are in the 8 range where I place DA:O. Their lowest scored game is NWN1 which is a 7.5.

However I am of the opinion that Dragon Age would have been better with Halflings. Halflings make everything better. Yes, they do. Especially when they bring their own drugs.
