#2 Do you know what it would take to setup a truly non-biased opinion poll? That would be an immense project. We'd have to find a large sample size (2000+) of mixed groups of people (video gamers, non-video gamers, etc.) with mixed ethnicity, cultures, genders that HAVE NOT played or even heard of Mass Effect before.

Then we'd have to segregate them from society and have 1/3rd play the entire series from front to back. 1/3rd would start from ME2, and the other 3rd would play only ME3 (half the players would import all the way through, the other half wouldn't). Before playing, half of the sample group would have to read up on advertisement materials released for the game featuring all the "promises" and such, and the other half would not.

Then and only then, would we get an accurate reading of what the average opinion on the ending is..

That's...some truly impressive mental gymnastics.

It is called official unbiased polling. It seems your mind is unable to comprehend the nature of unbiased polls. So here is a ball in a cup for you to play with.

Thanks.  They'll keep me occupied while I vote again.

Not sure what you mean by "mental gymnastics" within the context of what I typed.  Please elaborate or I'll just assume that you don't understand what an unbiased survey is.

You are a minority. You just use underhanded tactics to make yourselves seem larger than you really are. It's grown past pathetic.

I'm so glad you have the psychic power to tell how every fan feels and you have the awesome tech savy to prove that people who vote are all dirty cheaters. Can you tell me what tomorrows lottery numbers are? I could really use the money.

If that's truly how you think the alternative to a sloppy internet poll HAS to work in order to at least be less biased (bias is notoriously difficult to eliminate altogether), then I'm going to save us both the trouble.

Have a nice day/evening.

If you cared to read what I typed you'd have noticed that I gave an example of an unbiased survey.  Since many of the pro-enders assert that none of the online polls are accurate, I thought I'd give an example of what an unbiased survey may look like.  It's futile, and would cost a very pretty penny but it would be unbiased for the most part.

All we really have are internet polls.  Hold on though you're not getting away that easy lol; since you've taken to critizising my post I think it's high time you ante up and tell me your alternative.

Kind of crazy that if the numbers are right, those saying the ending is unacceptable, around 18000 when I voted, represents about $1,000,000 in sales. I know that Bioware doesnt see all of that, but that just means there are more effected than just Bioware

Over 18k votes and a massive 83% wanting a different ending, hardly a vocal minority.

Oy.  An unbiased survey would look like a polling firm calling up people in their sample and asking a randomized person at that number a series of questions to see if a) they've played ME3 and finished it and B) what did they think of the ending.  At the end of the survey you ask a series of demographic questions.  Boom bang.  You're going to burn through a lot of sample to get 1-2000 respondents and have all your demographic quotas filled out.  But you sure as hell wouldn't have to "segregate people from society" and make them play a few hundred hours of ME in order to get a good feel for where the consumer is at.

Yes, all we have are internet polls.  Which reminds me, I should vote.  Ta-ta.

Online polls are nearly all invalid. Testing a hypothesis, e.g. "The proportion of Mass Effect 3 owners that want the ending changed is greater than 50%" cannot be done unless the sample is simple random. A self-selected sample from those who choose to respond is not random.

Presumably, anyone satisfied with the ending would not even bother clicking though. That person has no stake in the poll. Even if Bioware changes the ending, there's no way they can erase that original experience. You can't apply a patch to a person's memory. At least, not yet.

This poll only drive traffic. The results mean nothing.

People are easily influenced by media and fellow gamers, hence my segregation comment.  Calling people and asking them their opinion & demo does NOT equal an unbiased survey *sigh*.  I was only responding to the naysayers demanding a perfectly unbiased survey so you're preaching to choir here, and you're arguing with the wrong guy.  Even your suggestion would cost loads of money.  Ta.

aw i missed naked cookie time.

i just voted.. wow 94% didnt like it.. thats pretty damning right there.

i did laugh at the first comment "Do you complain for a rewrite if a movie ending is not up to your standards? " actually many movies end up with alternative endings.. pick up a recent dvd and go to special features. people dont bat an eye lid if a movie ends up with a few different endings. at most you will have fans saying they prefered ending a to ending b

Proper sampling is very difficult. In this case, the only way to get an unbiased sample is to pay people to respond.

What's really funny about the pro-enders is that they think we skewed the poll. You know, if you take away all the views this post has had (assuming each view is unique and that each view actually voted on that poll and that each vote was for "yes" option) from the votes of the poll, you still get that an overwhelming majority of the people that voted hate the ending. And we're making a lot of assumptions. So all of this "the troops have mobilized, herp derp, the poll is skewed" is just a load of crap.

Thats irrelevant though, if someone is influenced by media and fellow gamers into not liking the ending then they dont like the ending, its simple as that, this is not a arbitrary concept your talking about where there are widely varying answers, its do you like the ending yes or no. If you dont you dont if you do you do Bias in this case has very little impact any random sampling would work it does not require segregation of the sample because your asking what those peoples opinions are if they are biased towards one thats irrelevant because msot people feel one way or the other due to bias but your not askign that your asking if people like something or not which is already a question of bias from the beginning.

It has nothing to do with bias or influence. The mere act of self-selecting to respond invalidates the poll. I beleve the hypothesis is true. But, an online poll can never be used to support it,
