Yeah I micro-managed the whole fight. I had used the pillers for cover after getting dinged with the first blast so I got that down. Aveline is spec-ed up pretty good as a tank and can hold her own again the ARW and keep it busy. I just need to kill the profanes quicker. I did not know about the cold/spirit weakness. Unfortunately Merrill is all lightning and stone but I did get that staff. Thanks for the tip.
Is it better to ignore the profanes and go all out on the ARW or do I have no choice but to kill all the profanes?
Recommendations for what Hawke should be for a Aveline/Merrill/Isabela squad?

without lightning resist runes or the right party and spec you have to kill the little ones first.

I am surprised that as a fighter you decided to take Merrill and Aveline. Your class gives you unique opportunity to naturally take Bethany and Anders and Varric. Plot-wise, Bethany will become a grey warden, you'll have 2 healing mages, area fire spells, Varric's support. Only pluses.
For my rogue, however, I am not sure whom to take. I would like to take Bethany and Anders, just to make her a GW, but it could be tough on NM for a rogue... I don't know...

I didn't take Bethany because I decided "mom" was right - didn't want to risk both her kids.
I get a kick out of Merrill so I like having her around and I'm just used to DA:O idea of having a traditional S&S tank so I bring Aveline, though maybe she is not needed if my Hawke can tank.
I also want to stick to my original plan of Aveline/Merrill/Isabela as much as possible (had no choice with Varric on this one)

I've been playing through a playthrough with Isabela, Aveline, Merill and my Hawke is a mage. He is good at elemental, creation, and spirit.

Well I was able to get past the ARW pretty easily. It was a matter of micromanaging and understanding the resistences to lightning. Instead of throwing down chain lightning and tempest and wondering why it wasn't working well, I stuff to staff attack and those profanes went down easily enough.
