I wish this game had no affiliation with Baldur's Gate.

Then I would feel mildly surprised and pleased with this above average game. Hence the 9/10 rating given to all above average games. Instead I'm left disapointed that it is just yet another above average game and not a genuine classic. The Phantom Menace of gaming.

On another note I know this game has an 18 rating but I couldn't help but feel that it has been designed and advertised for a target audience of 14-17 year old white males. The posts on this forum certainly cement that view.

I thought about buying the extra content and replaying. Then I found myself wondering where my Deus Ex, BG, Planescape Torment and Fallout disks are instead.

The OP stresses out why he thinks this isn't a "genuine classic" and makes a valid point.

Never played Baldur's Gate, but there seems to be a good amount of angst over it and dragon age here.

So Wookie, if you didn't know that the two games were made by the same folks you'd like it better? Well, I have good news for you. This game is in no way associated with Baldur's Gate. It's a completely seperate game. Sure, it's a game made by the same company, but hey, so what? Stop judging things by who created them and instead judge them based on their own merit. Did you enjoy this game? Yes? Then it's all good. Stop agonizing over a non-issue.

I know, I play something like Syberia or Still Life and I just think "Why can't we go back to Under A Killing Moon, Phantasmagoria and 7th Guest?"

:o

Seriously thought, the love for Planescape Torment - that's another game I've owned for years and have never gotten more than a few minutes into.  And Deus Ex - what is with all the Deus Ex love?  I had a friend who couldn't stop talking about that game.  Granted, I only tried the sequel (which is probably a mistake) but I know fairly quickly that it wasn't my kind of game.

I need to come up with a clever rejoinder that is like one line to post on all the "this game is so horrible I felt the need to come on the forums of the game and tell everyone how bad it was, just to see how much arguing I could start!"

Because on the internet peoples opinion are taken as fact.

Why the hell do people think that using the words "Baldur's Gate," "Fallout," and "Planescape," automatically make them come off as wise and mature RPG fans?

It doesn't hide your age, OP; Wikipedia was designed for even the least intelligent of apes to use.

Deus Ex 2 - Invisible war isn't even a pale shadow of the original... Trust me there's a hell of a lot more to the first one.

Good, then you should have no problem finding out why people mention them so often.

I think people bring up BG2 so often is because it had an emotional impact. I mean, some of the story arcs just punched you in the gut. Imoen's torture, finding whatshisname chopped up on the table, heck, the little boy in the graveyard who was 'hurt' by a 'bad man' and just wanted his teddy bear...those were emotionally twisting adventures. But, in many ways, BG2 was like a Stephen King book. Once in an interview he pointed out that the way he grabbed hold of the reader was by introducing a character, making you like the character, then foreshadowing a terrible fate and moving on, forcing the reader to continue reading to see what would happen. An example of that type: "Little Timmy rubbed the place his knee used to be before getting up to hobble to the store to get his mommy some icecream. It made his day to see his mother's warm smile, he loved his mommy so much! To bad Timmy didn't realize that, before the day was over, his bones would be parceled out to canabal clowns." You have to read 15 freaking chapters before you find out anything about the bloody clowns! King is a master at this, introducing an innocent character then torturing the hell out of him to make you emphasize with him. You read hoping the poor SOB comes out in the end. Well, that's BG2. A cheap manipulation of our emotions, and it worked. One hell of a game! But for all that...at it's most base, it was just a cliche. More so then DA.

Is it as good as Baldur's Gate? Dunno, I never played Baldur's Gate (shame on me, I know).

Is it as good as Fallout & Fallout 2? It's in the ballpark, but I've only started playing DA:O and I probably put Fallout on a bit of a pedestal due to nostalgia. Ask me again in a couple of years.

Is it as good as Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic? DA:O is in my opinion clearly better than KotOR. I can already tell you that KotOR 1 and 2 are going to revisit my hard drive less often because of DA:O.

Mostly, I'm just happy to have a roleplaying game that isn't yet another Elder Scrolls knockoff. I was getting sick of all those single-character FPS-with-stats RPGs. For that reason alone this is the only single-player game that got me to unsubscribe from all MMORPGs in many a year.

Although I have read about an affiliation with Baldur's Gate on multiple occasions noone ever said what the affiliation actually is.

Also I do not really see your point, how is Dragon Age being affiliated with Baldur's Gate or not influence your opinion of it being a "genuine classic"?
Is it originality, perhaps about one of them overshadowing the other or do you wish the game would be recognized as a great piece of work on it's own without the help of golden oldies?

Topher,

Due to your lack of a proper rebuttal pertaining to my main idea, you have bluntly agreed that a simple mention of those past games makes one appear as a mature, all-knowing RPG fan.

If you are going to toss away your opinion, at least use the right bin so we never have to experience it twice over.

I think the problem is overshadowing to a certain extent Tenebraxis. Dragon Age will find its own identity in time but it needs to do more to differentiate itself to achieve this.

51 years old.  African-American.  Yes, I've Played Balder's Gate I & II.  When they came out.  Am I comparing DA:O to them?  OF COURSE.  Does it lessen my enjoyment?  NO.

Take each game for what it is.  Don't compare.

I didn't get the impression that the marketing was aimed at any particular market aside from gamers.

Well Wookie, too bad you didn't like Dragon Age: Origins as much as... well many others do (myself included). Hopefully you can find another modern game you will not get disappointed of.

Good luck and have fun.

Meh.
I'm still waiting for the "DA:O is racist, Darkspawn horde = mexican immigrants" angsting.

More to the point, though, the OP does raise a valid point.  Expectations do make a difference.  Getting a good game when you were expecting a great one does feel a bit like a let-down, which can diminish the experience.
