Not that Mark is not a great VA, and not without his moments, but he's just too bland for me as Shepard.  Observe the following case study- Ashley drunk off her ass:

Let's see how ShepMale reacts: www.youtube.com/watch

Now let's watch FemShep's response: www.youtube.com/watch

That is why I prefer Jen to Mark.

Actually, a lot of people prefer her voice. Many people, like I, think Meer's voice sounds really monotone and unemotional.

But it's kinda silly to question someone's opinion. We like what we like.

Because this is what I hear. </opinion>

Konfined, both those links are the same right now :innocent:

To clarify, I am a feminist, but I just don't understand this one thing...

Femshep's voice actor sounds like someone who just got out of bed after a night of heavy drinking and smoking or something. She sounds tired with a slightly raspy voice 90% of the time. What's odd is that the same thing is present in Halo Reach with the female Noble 6.

Then you hear Mark Meer's voice, and you just get blown away.

Jennifer Hale is an amazing voice actress and has voiced hundred of characters across both animated tv series and other video games. Ever play KOTOR? She does the voice of Bastila Shan, she does the voice of Satale Shan in the old republic as well as the female trooper. She did the voice of Ayla Secura in the clone wars series and of Senator Tucchi. She voices Samus in the side scrolling Nintendo Wii Metroid game, she does a voice in Metal Gear Solid 4.

So I would think long and hard before insulting her voice acting, she is actually better then Mark Meer and has more under her belt then he does. Mark Meer is usually a canadian comedian. He is GOOD don't get me wrong, but she is better. I like both of them, but she is slightly better.

Damn, it's difficult to think that most ME players are player as the soldier class. Those people are missing out on some of the best the best game-play. I play through as every class at least once. Soldier is my least favorite because I hate just shooting. Power combos FTW.

I don't know.. some people just like to pretend to be women.

I understand a lot of people who play female are indeed women IRL, But most of them are men.
I think I only made one charachter that was female, just to see what it was like, I never even finished it's ME2 play because it just started getting too weird.

I don't think "pretending to be women" is accurate. Femshep isn't you as a woman, she's a character in her own right. My Manshep is nowhere near what a male version of myself would be, he's just a character that I play as.

And I don't really get the argument "well if I have to stare at an ass, etc, etc." I don't stare at Dudeshep's ass, or MaleHawke's, or my DA:O Dwarf's. Does it provide some kind of titillation?

I was going to write a lengthy post as to how wonderful Hale's performance is in ME3, how much it brings Shepard to life and makes the character so vivid and life-like.. but I think I'll just post two quick video samples instead (out of innumerable examples from ME3.. her delivery in me3 is never dull or without life).

Shepard (at least mine) is one I believe would be so very tired, worn and drained after all she's been through.. Hale captures this beautifully.

Do NOT watch these if you haven't finished the game.. significant spoilers in these 2 videos.

"There's no Shepard without Vakarian":

"You done good":

No need to write a long post the videos are all you need, I was there.

Exactly.

I get the opinion that the poster you responded to would have a hard time playing the absolutely fantastic game that your avatar comes from, since Jade is a strong female protagonist.

femShep: There's a reaper in my way, Wrex!

Hale does an incredible job of drawing me into the immersion so I feel like I am actually there.

HAHAH best line ever in the whole game.

"Pretending to be a woman" would suggest that the player is seeing themselves as Shepard. This defeats the purpose of a Role Playing Game. Shepard is a character that you create through your choices, absolutely; that's how the game was built. But to play the game and say to yourself, "I just banged Miranda, hot stuff, I'm a badass muh frakka", or ilk of that nature is either schizophrenic or kind of sad. The purpose of an RPG is to tell a story, and to interact within that story with as deep and interesting a character as you can build.

At the base of it, I like badass chicks. Jennifer Hale's voice acting appeals to me in a way Meer's just can't. I dig an absence of, ahem, roosters in romantic situations in the storytelling narrative, if available. Bioware's been pretty gravy about that.

And yeah, even in the Elder Scroll series, Oblivion/Skyrim, anyway, I build chick characters. Cause two hundred plus hours in, I just don't want to constantly be lookin' at a dude.

All of these things go into my reasoning.

I don't identify will Male-Shep or fem-Shep. Arguing that you play fem-Shep to fulfill some sort of gender switching fantasy is a little weird. That's what IRC is for.

Men playing as femshep is like reading a book with a female protagonist or watching a movie with a female lead. Besides, fem-shep acts likes asexually most of the time.

I'm was quietly pleased that they used different walking animations for each version though. But, fem-Shep still dances like male-Shep.

He used to be like that in ME1, but he's changed. Most people who share that opinion have never played Male Shepard in a playthrough, and haven't seen his constant improvement. On the other hand, Hale has remained exactly the same. Meer blew her out of the water in ME3, and I say that having played MaleShep and FemShep (maxed levels, full playthroughs) in ME1-ME3.

I think Hale's popularity is mainly due to her previous work which was amazing, she did voice my favorite female character of all time in KOTOR.

I agree with the sounding like she just got outta bed. Meer just embodies shepard and the power he wields greater than hale does IMO.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to find a game with a decent, nay, good female protagonist? Mass Effect is one of the precious few.  And along comes FemShep and she's just a soldier, doing her duty and being really good at her job.  Kicking ass all casual like, no big deal just gotta save the universe.

I love FemShep so. much.

MShep I can take or leave personally, but hey, I know why he's in the game and that's because people like to play as him.

I'm not blown away by Mark Meer at all.

However, I agree about FemShep, at least in ME3. Hale was really overdoing it in my opinion. She almost ruined the Garrus romance in a few parts because of her overacting. That paragon interrupt during the goodbye made me cringe when I should have been weeping!

It's surprising because I loved her in ME1 and thought she was decent in ME2. She's got some kind of flanderization going on, she keeps trying to sound tougher and tougher with each game and in ME3 she reached maximum capacity.

If you compare Hale's Shepard with Meer's Shepard during their conversation with Anderson on the Citadel at the end of ME3, that should tell you all you need to know about the voice acting behind each role. There is no question who delivers the more moving performance. With Hale, you can hear Shepard fighting with the overwhelming pain of her mortal injuries. Meer just sounds... tired.

Hale's Shepard has, on occasion, moved me to tears. Meer's never has.

as I said earlier, both Meer and Hale are amazing. it boils down to preference. Some people only play femshep (like sable Phoenix) and look down adn Meer other's only play male shep and look down at Hale.  see them as equa because I play them as equal I even went so far as to make my favorite Shep's of each gender Siblings. (changed my femsheps background from earthborn to Spacer to make it so(Number 1)) and I have no problem switching genders even if I'm mid playthrough with one.Image IPB
