It's not because they're pretending to be a woman. It's because they enjoy the Character more. I certainly don't play Femshep to pretend that I'm a woman.

I love Maleshep voice because it's so funny (specialy as a renegade) but maybe that's only because english isn't my first language...

Femshep is more serious, if I want a serious voice I just play with my french version

I typically tend to prefer male Shepards more; there's just something kind of easygoing about Mark Meer that I enjoy. FemShep is okay, and I have 3 or 4 of them kicking around (playing one through the trilogy right now, as a matter of fact) but there are certain things about her than rub me the wrong way. In ME2, for instance, I basically have to ignore Jacob entirely because the she just sounds like a total sleaze every time she talks to him. Eurgh.

I will say though, I was pretty impressed overall with FemShep in ME3. The weird awkwardness was gone and Jennifer Hale nailed the emotional moments really believably.

But it's still just a bunch of meaningless pixels. Therefore I am more comfortable with a male Shepard, as I find it easier to identiy myself with him.

I just never liked DudeShep. I'm not going to argue about Voice Actors, because I'll be honest, they're both great at what they do. I'll argue characters instead.

DudeShep sounds like just that, a Dude. He sounds like he just got home from his friend's house after smoking a fat bowl. It's almost like throughout the game he'd much rather say "Oh wow ... that was far out." That and I never liked male Shepards customization options, my first Shepard came out looking like an Asian man with Down Syndrome.

This. That being said, I don't think Hale has done a voice that I haven't liked. I think she just brings more to the character.

Yeah I kinda agree with this.  Meer does the Funny stuff better (Big Stupid Jellyfish!), but imo Hale has a better Action voice (There's a REAPER IN MY WAY WREX.)

Though that's not to say they say the other VA says the lines bad.  Hale says the "Big Stupid Jellyfish" line in a way that you would sort of expect someone who's being an **** would actually say it (it is the Renegade conversation option) but the comedy comes from the actual writing and not the delivery.  Meer says it in a straight up funny way (TrollShep!), with beat of the delivery. 

There's nothing wrong with how Meer says "There's a Reaper in my way Wrex" - certainly hits the right 'action' notes, however Hale gives it the extra inflection on "Reaper" and an almost growl on the "Wrex" that hits extra beats - annoyance at Wrex's fairly obvious statement (no **** there's a Reaper there...) and more urgency with the inflection on the word 'Reaper' (because she's FIGHTING A GODDAM REAPER) and since she's basically yelling the line as opposed to Meer saying it which fits the context of a loud chaotic battle with a Reaper while dodging Brutes.

I will admit making a "handsome" male Shepard takes a lot more effort than making an attractive female, but it's possible.

Femshep's voice actor sounds like someone who just got out of bed after a night of heavy drinking and smoking or something. She sounds tired with a slightly raspy voice 90% of the time. What's odd is that the same thing is present in Halo Reach with the female Noble 6.

Then you hear Mark Meer's voice, and you just get blown away.

That makes sense given his background, though.  Meer is an improv comedian.  Hale is a very experienced VA.

Yes, exactly.  The ending sequence is the same with Anderson.  Meer does a very good job, don't get me wrong, and that scene is so powerful to begin with.  But Hale actually sounds like she's dying.

Anyone else feel that something was lost when Bioware switched to voiced protagonists? It just feels like the overall quality of lines and dialogue complexity went down(makes sense actually, if you assume they VA budget is constant.  Giving shepard a voice means less for everyone else).

Both Hale and Meer are good, but I'd be willing to trade both voices for the ME1 dialogue complexity. For me, hearing Shepard talk doesn't actually add that much, as I already picked what they are gonna say (and I do hate the occasional vast disconnect between what is picked and what is said).  I'd rather give all the other charachters more voice budget and be able to have more complex dialogue.

I didn't have the misfortune of romancing Jacob, but this made me laugh.  Nobody cheats on FemShep. NOBODY.

Haha, Jacob deserved it. I didn't romance him (thankfully), but if I did, I'd have gone renegade on his ass.
