I wouldn't say she sounds like she was just dragged out of bed, but she does sound exhausted at times. However, I think this was intentional and fits the character very well. The things she sees and the amount of pressure put on her would wear anyone down pretty quickly.

Never played as a fem shep

me neither.
never really cared to be honest, though the voice acting does add to the experience marks is actually fine for me, he did a really good job in mass effect 3, especially with conveying emotional responses.

I guess so. I just prefer MShep, because I don't like playing women in video games. Again, not because I'm anti-feminist, because I am a feminist, but because lots of people play women in video games merely for the sexual factor (notice how there's really only two heterosexual romances for Femshep in ME3...).

Oi some of us go for both..
Still, that's more developer pandering to percieved demographics. Acknowledgement of female gamers is still a relatively new thing. That doesn't mean playing FemShep is bad.
It's down to personal choice in the end, and if some play women (or men) for titilation reasons well, that's their choice too.

Hale is just a more experienced, talented voice actress. Meer is inexperienced and it shows. A lot of it has to do with personal preference as well.

Who wants a female VA with a high-pitched, nasal voice to play the savior of the galaxy? Who wields an omni-blade and guns? I think Jennifer Hale is a great VA for FemShep, all low and tough with just the right edge to be sexy.

Jennifer Hale.

That is all.

Also, the fact that I worked REALLY hard and long to get my FemShep to look like Rhona Mitra.

I love Hale. She puts so much emotion into the voice, not to mention the correct emotion, that it makes the character that much more believable. The way she emphasizes certain emotions for certain lines is exactly how I would have said them, too.

On top of that, for FemShep in general, I love playing female characters (being a female myself, it makes the game a lot more personal). And we so rarely get a truly BA non-cliche female lead, which makes ME just that much better.

a) because I don't like mr cookie cutter mancake default shep

B) because I vastly prefer Hale's voice over Meer's - not that he's bad, but I think she's better. for example, Meer sounds a little odd to me with a black shep, but Hale sounds right whichever ethnic look you design her form

c) custom femshep looks way better than anything I can ever make with custom male shep

then again, I'm very much not a feminist. I'm a person first and foremost - gamer second, woman third. gender is just one defining quality among many.

This ****storm didn't take long to kick off. One sure way to get it started is to ask why femshep fans like femshep. Or god forbid, a male shepard vs female shepard thread. Because people can't just enjoy a thing.

In ME1 and 2, Jennifer Hale did a much better job of taking previous and following dialogue and letting that emphasize her emphasis.

In ME3, I think they are both even better and much more even. But aside from Jennifer's talent, there is just something more interesting about a strong female lead in the tradition of Ripley and Samus. The game is built with male body language and response in mind. Having a woman injected into that makes it more original I think.

I really like her voice. Also like Mark's, which is why I've always had both make and female Shepards. Sadly, I can't seem to work up any enthusiasm to play through a second time, so I haven't heard much of Hales' performance in ME3 yet.

Agreed, people are way too hostile or take things too personally.

Her inflection and cadence makes her lines sound like a part of a conversation, Meer's tend to sound delivered in a context-less vacuum.

Though I do agree he is much improved in ME 3.

My only problem with the femshep thing is how so many of the people who play it act like this hipster "femshep is the ONLY shep" BS.

Actually, a lot of people prefer her voice. Many people, like I, think Meer's voice sounds really monotone and unemotional.

But it's kinda silly to question someone's opinion. We like what we like.

This.

The OP's question is one I've asked as well on a few occassions.

Personally, I find Mark Meers voice acting to be great, and not "void of emotions" like some people claim it. At one point I thought it was because it was simply -the- voice I got to know shepards face to, but after having played ME1 and ME2 way more times then is healthy, and then now finishing in ME3, and after having thought about it a lot, I find it to be highly satisfactory.

That being said, I also think that Jennifer Hale does a good job. They both do. Why people seems so madly in love with her(and which seems to result in the occassional outright resentment towards Mark Meer, which is just puzzling) I do not know. Charming personality irl? Good references? Her voice acting is good, if yet a bit "coarse" at times. But I really dont see why some people give her the "godess" status.

The reason I prefer femshep over maleshep is simple. 90% of games give me NO choice of who I want to play and just throw me a male hero to play. So when I finally have a choice, and can play an awesome female character? I run with it happily.

what ****storm? it was a genuine question (imo) inviting genuine answers - haven't seen anything so far that is negative, hysterical, or overtly defensive from either side, just a bunch of people listing preferences and why.
