To clarify, I am a feminist, but I just don't understand this one thing...

Femshep's voice actor sounds like someone who just got out of bed after a night of heavy drinking and smoking or something. She sounds tired with a slightly raspy voice 90% of the time. What's odd is that the same thing is present in Halo Reach with the female Noble 6.

Then you hear Mark Meer's voice, and you just get blown away.

I'd disagree with your characterization of Femshep's voice.  I'd say it's more that she sounds like someone who doesn't give a damn what people think of her.  I like it.  It feels a lot more natural to my ear than Meer's delivery.  The best comparison I can think of is the final scene with Anderson.  Hale's performance makes it sound like Shepard is in pain and is just emotionally and physically spent.  Her tank is on empty, and she's just so glad it's all finally over.  Meer's performance doesn't carry any of the same feeling of pain or exhaustion.

The only place in the games I don't like Hale's performance is the "I'm more interested in just talking for a bit." line when you try to talk to Jacob, and honestly, I put that down to direction more than anything.

My only problem with the femshep thing is how so many of the people who play it act like this hipster "femshep is the ONLY shep" BS.

aside from the 80% or so of the population who apparently just play default man shep

everyone's shep is the only shep, that's the attraction of ME

I loved her voice; I'm actually a RL female Marine, and she says things that I've said to my squadmates from time to time, HAHA. and she delivers them the same way I would have, or other female marines I worked with did. That level of realism, for me, is what sold it. Male Shep sounds like an actor delivering lines; FemShep sounds like a big godamn hero saving the day.

I really think Hale nailed making Shepard sound like a soldier and military leader. I hate when people say it makes her sound "too manly".

I actually just started playing as FemShep. So far Hale does a fantastic job voicing the role, but so does Meer. BioWare did an excellent job picking their lead voice actors. :D

Because 99% of the other shooters out there have a male protaganist. And I like her voice a little better than Meer.

I must disagree with you OP, I listened to both voices, and played ME1 as both FemShep and MaleShep and, eventhough I do like Mark Meer as an actor, Jennifer Hale definitely kicks his ass, especially on ME3, al the dialoges from the point you arrive to London till the end of the game are just ****ing gold when speaking about FemShep, she almost made cry every 2 ****ing minutes xD Specially the conversation with Anderson at the citadelle, her acting there is probably the best piece of dubbing I heard in my entire life.

Here you can listen to it, if you ignore the player's voice ****ing around:

Four pages in twenty minutes, eh?

This should go about as well as the other ten topics on the same subject that are posted. Every. Single. Day.

This ****storm didn't take long to kick off. One sure way to get it started is to ask why femshep fans like femshep. Or god forbid, a male shepard vs female shepard thread. Because people can't just enjoy a thing.

What ****storm?

Everytime I've seen a thread / discussion about this, it has stayed civil, it's purely a matter of opinion afterall.

Personally I like Hale better, as she is consistently good throughout the 3 games, but it has to be said that Meer has improved a lot every game.

Hell, at times, Meer manages to put more emotion to his lines than Hale during ME3.

I tried a playthrough of ME1 with a femshep...lasted about 5 minutes. Just didnt care for her voice at all. It seems for me in this game more then others, voice is a defining factor if I like people or not. I disliked Liara mostly because I dont like her voice and I really liked Tali because of her voice. However, had the FemHawke VA done the FemShep as well, I could easily play that. Sadly she just does a cameo in Jacob's mission.

Oh, this is fun! Let me try!

*ahem*

To clarify, I am a stereotypical male, but I just don't understand this one thing...

BroShep's voice actor sounds like a robot who was just put together by a heavy drinker who totally forgot to give him his "tone of voice" chip or something. He sounds monotonous with a slightly "outside" voice 90% of the time. What's odd is that the same thing is present in most other games with the male lead character.

Then you hear Jennifer Hale's voice, and you just get blown away.

What separates Meer from Hale to me is his better sense of comic delivery. Shepard has a lot of funny lines, and they sound completely natural from Meer, like you can hear the genuine amusement in his voice. Hale, on the other hand, is always stuck in "tough girl mode" even in these situations, and it doesn't work as well.

Maybe it's because Meer's done a bunch of improv comedy.

I love Jennifer Hale's other work, but her Shepard just doesn't do it for me.

Also, Meer played the "biotic god" from ME2 (maybe he does all volus, IDK...).

A slightly prefer Hale's acting to Meer's, and usually play through as femshep first, but having played as them both I don't think either are bad. They both capture Shepard well, are both believable and it's fun to have a new emphasis or take on a line.

I've listened to both Jennifer Hale and Mark Meer when it comes to the role of Shepard, and I find myself stunned that Mark's talent was so downplayed.  Jennifer gets to emote like nobody's business, really drawing me into the character and getting that feeling of "YEAH!  That's exactly what my Shep would say!" time and time again.  Whereas with Mark, I kept waiting.

Granted, Mark does lose some of the monotone as the series goes on.  He did far better in ME2, and in ME3 I even got a couple of those "YEAH!" moments.  Still, Jennifer nailed it every time, in every game.

Sorry, Mark.  Jennifer's got my vote.  (I loved your work as Jethann, though!) <3

Now don't get me wrong, I think Mark Meer is very talented, and the other voices he does in ME are very good (Biotic God and so on).
But as Shepard he always appears to miss the mark (hur hur), I don't know if he's told to tone it down by the director or what, but Hale is always superior.

I prefer her voice. It seems perfect.
I'd rather listen to it over male shep, but he's alright as well.

Maybe you are associating the voice with someone else who has  a character that is unlike Shep. I have no such association, so the voice is fine for me.

This is clearly a matter of opinion. Nothing about Mark Meer's performance blows me away. I'm not a feminist; Mark Meer just sounds lifeless and drab.

Jennifer Hale, across three games, delivered one helluva performance in my eyes. Well, in my ears, you know what I mean. And frankly, MaleShep and Liara just don't do it for me. I'm not interested in helping that dude get laid by any bubble-bottomed blue chicks.

I like the Female Shepard for the reasons people have already stated.

I don't think either is "bad" at the role, though. It's just different interpretations of the character by different actors.

He does the Vorcha voices too. So he's good at funny/strange/cartoony voices. But as a lead protagonist? Eeehhh.. they should have hired someone else.
