I'm curious as to where this statistic comes from.

It smells distinctly of bulls**t.

Search around the forums or google. It's a stat released by BioWare.

I think more people play as femshep (at least part of the time) than that statistic says. Femshep seems pretty dang popular around everywhere. She's pretty well advertised, too. Maleshep may be default, so of course gets more attention, but I highly doubt only 18% of players have played a Femshep.

For me male heroes are a dime a dozen, movies and games everything/one from James Bond to Marcus Fenix and Mario, boring after a while. Its like right uo to Lara Croft females could onlt be the prize/damsel in distress, also boring overdone. Everytime a see a woman fall while running and scream from miscellaneous psychopath/bad guy, I findmyself rooting for the bad guy, tired if that helpless mentality that been bred i to our society for females. A strong woman is achange and sometimes a turn on, especially if shes not just a dude with boobs. Plus i like Hale's voice, works for me.

I thought Hale did a marvelous job in the first and Meer was simply okay. In the second game Meer sometimes sounded too monotone for me while Hale was a tad bit too emotional. Then I found out that Meer did the vorcha and the biotic god and gained new respect for him. In the third Meer blew me away....any doubts I had were gone. Hale on the other hand seemed to overplay the part for me too much. I understand that people like her and I don't judge them because clearly she has a following that enjoy her but for me she is too emotional and seems PMSing all the time in the third game. I don't blame Hale for it because she was told how to read the lines by a voice director who in turn was told how Femshep should sound by someone else.

ME3: Final Hours

There are other stats too.

87.2% use customized face.
54% imported save from ME1
18% play female Shep, 82% male Shep
64.59% play Soldier class

Jacob survived the suicide mission in 93.3% of all attempts, whereas Legion only lived in 68.5% of the runs etc.

I think it's pretty much a given that most ME players are casual players (who probably never even heard of BSN) and they play male Soldier.

To clarify, I am a feminist, but I just don't understand this one thing...

Femshep's voice actor sounds like someone who just got out of bed after a night of heavy drinking and smoking or something. She sounds tired with a slightly raspy voice 90% of the time. What's odd is that the same thing is present in Halo Reach with the female Noble 6.

Then you hear Mark Meer's voice, and you just get blown away.

See, my personal opinion, as well as my husband's, is the exact opposite of yours. We think Jennifer Hale is peerless. Her voice acting blows us away.

We both find Mark Meer to be underwhelming. To us he sounds like he's just reading lines in a flat voice with very little emotion.

Femshep actually sounds like she cares about the epic things that are happening. She sounds inspired. Maleshep sounds bored out of his mind and apathetic.

I don't know, my husband and I think that Hale is objectively a far better actor, but I hear a lot of people saying Meer is amazing so I guess it's down to personal taste.

No, I think he's right. The statistic is based off Xbox Live accounts, which isn't all-encompassing, but it's a big sample. The Hale fans are just really devoted and outspoken about it

Or the Hale fans are just smart enough to not ever spend any money on an XBox :P

Eh, Hale's alright, but I think I like Meer better. His voice may ber less emotive, but it has emotion, whereas Hale's rarely goes beyond pissed off even in the happiest instances.

Get new ears. Your current ones clearly don't work.

You're wrong. You are simply wrong.

It ALL comes down to personal preferances. Some people think Iron Maiden is better than Metallica. Some people think that Brad Pitt is a better actor than Leonardo DiCaprio, but at the end of the day it all comes down to opinion.

Telling people to "get new ears" because they like Mark's voice acting better than Jennifer Hale's is just ignorant and condescending.

- Jennifer Hale.
- Action girls are awesome.
- Liara x FemShep romance makes me feel warm and fuzzy.
- I'd rather play as the nicer to look at option.
- Jennifer Hale.

I'd bet that most casual players do not even know that Shepard can be a female. BioWare did not really advertise that until ME3.

It's accurate.

But that's still about 1 in 5 players. A significant segment of the players.

That said, i play femshep for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is the fact that femshep is not voiced by Mark Meer.

Meers is okay, but I love Hale's voice acting. That is one of the major reasons FemShep is my default/canon.

I don't think they are.  I think if they pull it off of just XBox users, then it's just a skewed representation.  I personally play PS3 and the two other girls I know that play Mass Effect also play on PS3 because PS3 generally has more female friendly titles.  Also, one of the guys I know plays both Male Shep and Fem Shep on different playthroughs, which I think a majority of people also do, just to see different story angles.

She's downright creepy when she's trying to "convince" Jacob to come back to her. Like, imagine the worst, most obsessive ex-girlfriend ever, and give her Spectre status.

I don't know, whenever I think of Commander Shepard I think of femshep. Not sure why. I also can't comprehend a male shep/Liara romance.

Also, Manshep has a boring voice.

True dat! I immediately switched my ME3 cover to have FemShep on the outside ;) Loved that they did that this time around instead of just making Meathead Shep the main advertising figure.

Also, does Male Sheps standard appearance bother anyone else? I was talking to a male friend about his playthrough and he mentioned this as well, that the out of the box male Shep kind of looks like a fashion model who didn't shower for a day and donned armor.  We were expecting someone more...rugged.  Maybe that's just us.

I didn't have the misfortune of romancing Jacob, but this made me laugh.  Nobody cheats on FemShep. NOBODY.

If you want to see her range, play Bulletstorm where she plays a super grimy lady.  It was awkward to have the same sweet-sounding Paragon Shepard suddenly tell me that she's going to shoot my dick off if I don't shut up.
