I'm male and I don't usually play with female characters.

But Jennifer Hale is way better than Mark Meer.

Meer did a great job on 2 and 3, and he really evolved as a voice actor. Some of his dialogues in 3 are awesome, while on 1 he is plain boring. But Jennifer Hale is being awesome since Mass Effect 1. Playing as Renegade FemShep on 1 is pure laugh.

I think she created a Commander Shepard superior in so many ways than the default Shepard, that FemShep, in my opinion, is the true hero of the series. She is more believable as a hero and even kind of villain on some renegade moments.

I don't know.. some people just like to pretend to be women.

I understand a lot of people who play female are indeed women IRL, But most of them are men.
I think I only made one charachter that was female, just to see what it was like, I never even finished it's ME2 play because it just started getting too weird.

I guess it's just how you see things, on Skyrim my secondary charachter is a Female, so IDK.

I might play femshep someday, but I can't really get in to the game playing a different gender than my own.

If you look away from voice acting...

...I'd still go with male Shepard.

Also, does Male Sheps standard appearance bother anyone else? I was talking to a male friend about his playthrough and he mentioned this as well, that the out of the box male Shep kind of looks like a fashion model who didn't shower for a day and donned armor.  We were expecting someone more...rugged.  Maybe that's just us.

I am so used to the default male Shep (because I have been using that since my very first ME1 run) that it is pretty much the Shepard for me (90% of all my playthroughs were using that face - mostly because I think Meer is far superior to Hale). I have yet to see a custom male Shepard that would look more realistic.

I always customize femShep though since it is an upgrade over the default one, imho :)

I think Mark Meer is underrated, considering how he has to voice a myriad of minor characters in addition to Maleshep, and do ALL of these voices to the same standard as Maleshep.

Ms. Hale is an amazing VA, no doubt, but she also gets the benefit of just concentrating on Femshep.

Regarding Femshep in ME3: Voice and dialogue is the about the best it has ever been. The new default Femshep is really pretty, though the old default femshep is still available and has been improved. Characterization and mannerisms are better differientiated from Maleshep. ME3 is the best game for Femshep yet.

It's not because they're pretending to be a woman. It's because they enjoy the Character more. I certainly don't play Femshep to pretend that I'm a woman.

I'm male and I enjoy femshep more. I prefer her voice acting over male sheps but after me1 I couldn't play with a different voice than what I started with. I think I chose femshep initially because there aren't as many bad ass female heroes, that aren't half naked, in entertainment. I chose Liara as Li but I was tempted by garrus cause he's like sheps bff.

Actually, a lot of people prefer her voice. Many people, like I, think Meer's voice sounds really monotone and unemotional.

But it's kinda silly to question someone's opinion. We like what we like.

Ugh, no it isn't. Even if your opinion comes out of a horse's rectal orifice, it demands a reason behind it. Opinions that don't have solid reasons deserve to be dismissed outright.

I don't really agree. Sometimes I just prefer things and don't have a solid reason why; I just like them more. And I feel that I don't have to defend my preferences. But I respect your thought on it ~

Preferences are not opinions. Prefering vanilla over chocolate or blue or over green are preferences. You're not opining on the merits of vanilla or blue.

An opinion is a response to a why with a why or a what with a why.

Word.  I love that Shep is arguably hot but also not stripped down to her unmentionables in every scene.  The armor she wears is distinctly feminine but also not ridiculously over sexualized.  I had a hard time even wearing the LBD (little black dress for those who aren't familiar with girl lingo) around the ship because it seemed so out of character for her. Though I appreciate the thought the devs put behind it (i.e. not looking like a mechanic every time you were able to dress in your own clothes.)

I don't know, whenever I think of Commander Shepard I think of femshep. Not sure why. I also can't comprehend a male shep/Liara romance.

Also, Manshep has a boring voice.

I can't comprehend not being able to comprehend it.

You think of Commander Shepard as a woman because you play as a female Commander Shepard. I think of Commander Shepard as a man because I play Commander Shepard as a man. I think Jennifer Hale's voice is boring.

See what I did there? It's all a matter of preference. Nobody is going to be able to change the other's mind, which is why I find these BroShep v. FemShep threads to be pointless. It's end up just being a cluster****.

I finally decided to play as male Shep. On my third ME3 playthrought, first time in trilogy (had some tries before, but short one).

And it just wasnt right. Its like robot speaking, somethimes...

But I have to admit he is hot. I loved looking at him. There you go. When you use someone who is considered to be Model of the century...

Why do I *love* femshep?

www.youtube.com/watch

Wrex: Shepard, get that second hammer going.
femShep: There's a REAPER in my way, Wrex!

Hale does an incredible job of drawing me into the immersion so I feel like I am actually there.

I am female and I always play maleshep. But yesterday I thought I would do a ME 3 run through with Femshep. Her voice annoys the hell out of me. However Jennifer Hale is lovely.

As others have said. It's what each person prefers.

I only wore that dress for my date with Kaidan.

I play my femShep patterned after Honor Harrington (if anyone is familiar with the series), so she usually walks around the ship in her Alliance uniform.

I like Mark Meer's VO much better. Anyone who has ever really spoken with someone who has seen battle and death and experienced great loss knows they don't really speak with a lot of emotional variation. While they may still care about certain things and/or get angry/sad/happy, it is a lot less evident.
For most of my childhood I was certain my grandfather (a WWII officer) didn't like me at all. It was only after I joined the service myself did I begin to understand that mentality. IMHO, it is more realistic to me that Cdr. Shepard act in this way. Also, I believe it is harder to act without emotion than it is to act with emotion. ::points at Ben Stein::

I play Fem-shep so my eight year old daughter sees it okay for a women to be powerful and not be defined by a relationship with a man.

My husband is the same way.

Here in our house FemShep is the Shepard and has been since ME1, so much so that I automatically think of Shepard as a woman. I always get thrown for a loop when I see trailers with Maleshep and have to remind myself that to the majority of people Shepard is a male.

18% is a significant statistic...
That's nearly one out of every five people who have ever played Mass Effect...

Personally, I play as default Male Shepard, and a soldier for the first two games...
Mostly Paragon with a little Renegade mixed in...

I really like the Sentinel class in ME3. Tech Armor for tanking, Assault Rifle+Machine Pistol+Heavy Pistol without recharge penalty, a couple biotic powers, a freeze blast, the ability to overload shields, and if you make Warp Ammo your bonus power and pick the squad upgrade, you're loaded for bear and have a wide variety of tactics at your disposal...

Just looking at youtube videos, it seems like Femshep makes a better Renegade and Maleshep makes a better Paragon...

Personally? I'm a woman IRL, so playing as a female character just lets me get into the game more, my decisions in game better reflect what I as myself would do in that situation. It's perfect escapism for female players I think, you play as a beautiful, intelligent woman who can kick ass better than most men. Also, love interests are more compelling for me as FemShep than as MaleShep, I don't like all of them but there is some attraction there for some of them, but hitting on the likes of Miranda, Tali, Liara etc. just strikes me as silly because I feel no attraction towards those characters. As FemShep I actually have an interest in building up my character's story through the use of the love interest system, while when I play as MaleShep, it just feels like a silly extra bit.

Also on the voice actor bit, I genuinely like Hale's performance. Slightly deeper voice than other female characters, a little raspy. It fits Commander Shepard perfectly. Had they hired someone who would give her a high-pitched, girly ultra feminine voice, it would have been inappropriate and a little too JRPG for my tastes. Not to mention that at least some of the time she sounds like she's trying to put an appropriate amount of emotion into a line. When I played with MaleShep, Meer sounded like he was boredly reading off a script no matter what he was saying (not as much in ME2/ME3, he had improved by then, but I got my first impression in ME1, so that's what sticks with me). I only like Meer as a pure renegade, his robotic monotone make renegade actions lulzier than Hale's attempts at sounding badass, but as a paragon he's sooo dull.

I think we have to bear in mind that it does vary from platform to platform. Xbox Live accounts give a good segment of the console audience favouring MaleShep.

I wonder if the PC reflects the same trend though? Kind of curious as the folks I know who play it on PC tend to be femshep players... myself included.

The first and most obvious reason is Jennifer Hale's voice acting. I've been a fan of her work for years, and she just puts more emotion into Shepard than Mark Meer does. Meer plays the stoic, emotionless thing quite well, but Hale lets you hear what's going on in Shepard's head while she's talking. Not to mention her inflections are usually much more appropriate to the scene she's in.

The other major factor is the way Shepard is treated no differently as female than she is as male. She's a skilled warrior and dynamic leader; the fact that she's a woman is PART of her character without DEFINING her character. This settles her firmly among the great sci fi heroines (precious few that they are) such as Ripley or Sarah Connor.

Finally, femShep has no face but what you define. Yes, they provide a default, but there is no scanned head morph used for marketing across all three games the way they have with Sheploo. There is more player investment in her because she is YOUR creation, not BioWare's.

All in all I find femShep a far more interesting and engaging character than yet another white malegeneric space marine.
