I started this thread because I'm sick of the same old threads in this forum.  So on with it.

What do you name your characters and why?

For male characters, I tend to go with Duncan (fan of the name since FH's Dune).   If that's taken (and of course it was in this game...  QQ), I'll use Banon or sometimes a relatively unknown biblical name as they are usually cool-sounding without coming off as the clichéd Roman names.
For females, I've always liked the names Nawel, Lyamine, and Mika.  Don't know why.
When playing Mass Effect, I have to admit that my male Shephard was named Book as a homage to Firefly.

Care to add?

For male characters I generally go with either Ulrick or Morcar.

For female characters I have a number of different names: Morgothi, Morgiah, Luthienne, Nenya, Ishara, Xaiya, Anariel... To name a few.

Which Roman names are cliched? I always name my character "Chris" uncreatively or whatever the default name is. I always name dog after some ancient Greek or another.

It's the whole sound of Romanesque names...  Romulus, Maximus, Tiberius, us, us, us!

Oh, and I bought my car from a guy names Ulrick.  He had 4 points in coercion and a +30 Cunning modifier.

That exists because of the system of declensions in Latin, not because the names are just contrived to sound alike.

Sux to be on the receiving end of persuade, huh?

:wizard: These are not the droids you are looking for.

I named my Dwarf "Domir", completely unoriginal but my only other idea was Grormi, and I figured that sounded even more like a Tolkien name. As for my human, I got a little bit more creative and named him Arduic (pronounced Ard-wick). No idea where it came from, probably heard it from a movie or read something like it in a book years ago. My next character I'm simply going to name Hal (reference to Hal Emmerich as Metal Gear is one of my favorite series). :P

I have a few names I like that I use from time to time, but I usually just come up with something new on the spot.

Most of the time I use Soupir Rouge or just Soupir. If not I go for classic French names. In this round it was Marie Cousland which gives it an fun twist considering the politics of Orlais and Ferelden.

My first character was called Nemetona after a ancient goddess worshipped in eastern Gaul. Her name means She of the Sacred Grove. Thought is was fitting as my character is a Dalish Elf.

The character I'm playing atm was supposed to be Catthier or such, from Gaelic, meaning both fox and victory, but I forgot to update her name when I brought her over from the CC, so she's still just "Cat" T_T

Killjoy was my standard Baldur's Gate name, which I retired with the game. Tripedius is a name born out of wow naming issues but since that is a paladin, I named my mage Trion (after Alpha Trion for those who know).

Wyllowe = alternative spelling of the tree. Bend with the wind, rather than break and able to be born again from a single surviving limb tip.

Does anyone else have my oddity--all my characters have to have different names--even different first names (since so many games have only first names). I actually have a database of my RPG characters, that now has over 400 characters. I also prefer names that fit the names in the setting, and really appreciate games that randomly suggest names that will fit the world they have created.  Anyway, current character is a  city elf mage named Bryn.

i made my human noble look as close as is possible within the limits of the character designer to myself, and used my own name. its interesting having everyone call you by your real name while the character looks very similar to yourself. its like digital me.

Named my character Valin which was the name of a favourite character from back in my D&D days. Of course his original last name was Goodwill which made it sound a bit better. The "Cous" part of "Cousland" (human noble last name) sounds like a slang expression for the female genetalia in my language so that was a tough one to get my head around.

I tend to use names I favour in books I read. Sometimes I use names that I make up if no suitable name is coming to mind. My method for this is to simply choose a first letter and then build the name using near random letters with proper vowel placement. I also usually play the female character since I happen to be one, I familiarize more with the female.

I love RPG's with random name generators or default names because I spend too much time worrying whether the name I pick suits the setting and lore of the game. In RPG's that an asian character suits the setting I like using the name Jing Ke or just Jing if its first names only, its the name of the assassin who failed at killing the first emperor of China. I would normally hate using the name of a real life person, but I really like how that name sounds when prounounced properly.

Jing Kie, he was the guy who said "the hero goes forth - and he never returns" or something similar as I recall.

I was originally going to play a healer character, HealsLikeJesus like my username here.

However I was not aware of the 10 letter limit on the character creation screen, so after several frustrating attemps to deliver what were to be both my character's purpose AND name in 10 letters, down from 14, I gave up and went in the polar oposite .

So instead of HLJ, I named him Maydie. A name that hilariously enough, turned out to be something of a prophecy during my first run through the game. A prophecy that saw itself constantly fulfilled over and over.

I dont go about using names that sound fantasy, 'cuz thats geeky

So its Maydie, a warrior ( ironically the class most likely  to die)
Avarice, a rogue, for which the name is quite fitting
and Khadgar for the handsome mage fella you see on my avatar, taken from a book.

Darpaek, Aeric, Hasko, and Andrae for female characters. I wanna do a 5th playthru to become Queen (poor Andrae was a city elf), but now I'm in the inconvenient place of thinking up another name. I think I'll just use my mother's... but then she couldn't have sex because that would be creepy...

Stumpy the dwarf just because I like the name for a dwarf and have been using it for 20 years, Bowina the archer, Fizzlina the mage because used to some RPG where spells sometimes fail, Pickalot the rogue. Generally the name is based on the type of class so I easily determine what they are without thinking about it.

Latin names ending in -us are names of males. At least, that's the male form of the most common names. For females, most names would end in -a.

Alternatively, you could go for a Greek philospher kind of name. I recommend Platyhelminthes.

Did spell failure in that RPG come with a fart noise?  Because if it did... I think we share fond memories.  =P

In fantasy games, I try to give my characters names that make sense within their world. Fereldan names are typically inspired by Celtic/Gaelic names, so all of my human characters have had names that fit that theme (Declan, Ciara, Gavain, Gareth). I don't really have one favorite name that I like to use in every game; I prefer to give each of my RPG characters a unique name.
