I notice that a lot of male players seem to play as a female Commander Shepard. My friend told me that he prefers femdhep because Jennifer Hale is a better voice actor than Mark Meer (not sure if that's his name). But from what I've heard I wouldn't say her voice acting is particularly good. Even her role as Naomi in MGS4 I found lacking. I find males like to play a female character in other games too and I've never understood the motivation. If I have a choice I always choose a male character because, being a male, I feel I can relate to the character more or see myself in their role. So why do guys play as female characters?

I play male Shepard (using the default face) 90% of the time. He is THE Shepard for me.
But when I wanna spice it up a bit, I load up a custom femShep and play around. I do notice subtle differences in some conversations, check out Renegade/Paragon option I've never taken before etc.

I like Mark Meer's voice acting much, much better than Jeniffer Hale's, but it is still fun to play femShep from time to time.

I'm not male but I have played male characters for several reasons. Like many who will post; it's eye-candy at times. My male character in Fable is just like running around in Halo. Mainly it is because female characters aren't available, and even if so I prefer the male in some instances.

And BroShep's leather jacket in ME3? Totally droolworthy and reason to play as him.

If im gunna play a character for hours, I'd rather stare at ****** and ass than a guy's ass.

Did both so I could enjoy all the possibilities of the game. Don't really like one over the other though. They are like two different people to me.

I think it comes down to personal play style. Some people self-insert. Some want a character they relate to. Some people like to have a character that is far removed from them.

I enjoying playing femshep for that latter reason. It's a similar reason to why I think its fun to play Renegade. It's stepping outside the box. I've played enough lantern-jawed space marines to last me a life time.

Well, as regards Mass effect in general it seems most consider Hale's voiceacting generally better and having more emotion. Its all about personal taste.

I am among those liking Hale's voiceacting better but i in no way consider Meer's bad, far from it.

Why would you stare at his/her ass? You are missing a lot if you do that

Same reason I (female, btw) always play as Sheploo. If I'm gonna stare at the same character for 30 hours or so, I want some eye candy. Plus it's easier to role play if your character is distinctly different from you.

Some people like myself like looking at the pretty femshep they made.

(Plus romancing Liara is... Well yeah.)

"Three words: Sexy lesbian time"
That's what a friend of mine told me when I asked him the same question... And I agree.

He has his awkward moments... especially in the first game. But I agree it's not that he's a bad actor it's just that Hale is... awesome?

3rd person rpgs involve staring at your characters ass for hour on hour on end. would you want to stare at a man's ass or women's ass?

I play as femshep to see how the dialogue is changed and how the interactions between NPCs and the player are affected. If you play as a female you do get some pretty funny scenes between her and the other characters. Plus, let's face it, who wouldn't want to see a hot woman kicking serious reaper ass?

There are lots of reasons. Some use the "I'd rather stare at a chick's ass than a guy's," a lot of people prefer Jennifer Hale's voice acting, the chance to play a girl in the role that's usually taken by a guy, and I think a really good one I hadn't considered was that it adds an extra layer of fiction to the story.

I play girl characters all the time, though the reasons vary. I don't think Femshep is some kind of super hot chick, so any of the sexiness is out in this case. I do prefer her voice though, so much that if I start up a guy Shepard, it sounds strange to me. I honestly don't know why I usually pick girls nowadays, but I found that I really like Femshep, so I stick with her.

Well, in casual clothes, the animation is horrible of you walking. I wonder if BW is ever going to get animations to look more real. And you are constantly looking at Shep's back side. Might as well be a more shapely one.

They should ask CD PROJECT RED on how to do motion capture animation, they are superior to BW's.

I've played a lot of games where you are a female so I don't really overthink it. It would be weird to have a male LI though. Lesbianism all the way.

What's with all the threads on this lately? This has been an ongoing question since ME1, and the answers have not changed.

We play femshep because:

1) We like Jennifer's voice acting to Mark Meer's.
2) We would rather look at a female backside for hours at a time.
3) The Liara/Diana/Kelly/Traynor romances are a little more...interesting.
4) There is something more original about a strong female lead injected into a role designed for a male. Ripley from Aliens has the same draw. Samus from Metroid does as well.

Can we put this question to bed?

This is a big part of it, even if Femshep is probably the least sexualized female lead I can think of, and if you're going to live another life for a while, might as well take it all the way. It also helps with the whole "future" illusion, breaking the predominantly "manhero" thing of most action stories/games/etc.

That and Jennifer Hale is a great voice actress.
