I notice that a lot of male players seem to play as a female Commander Shepard. My friend told me that he prefers femdhep because Jennifer Hale is a better voice actor than Mark Meer (not sure if that's his name). But from what I've heard I wouldn't say her voice acting is particularly good. Even her role as Naomi in MGS4 I found lacking. I find males like to play a female character in other games too and I've never understood the motivation. If I have a choice I always choose a male character because, being a male, I feel I can relate to the character more or see myself in their role. So why do guys play as female characters?

I play both, but I decided on a female Shepard as my "canon" Shepard because I like Jennifer Hale's voice acting.  She's pretty darn good.  Meer has serious talent but his male Shepard voice doesn't do much for me.

Serious answer? I'm bored of the male characters and want to play outside the box.

I used to roll male characters all the time, but then I looked at the gender button and wondered what would happen if I pressed it just this once?

Once I did that it was as if I'd broken through a wall to experience more gameplay variations from a title.

I still roll male characters but now I tend to invent backhistory in my head and sometimes in character creation that backhistory writes intself.

FYI I have a caucasion male with gingerish hair and an african-american female character with blonde hair. From my perspective they fit the voices of the voice actors perfectly.

Most will play for LiaraxFemshep... You know Lesbian Blue Ass Porn...

But I simply play as her becasue I'm not too fond of Mark Meers Sheploo voice. It fails to convey emotion for me, emotion that is neccessary for the entire plot. (Not hating on Mark Meer props ofr his Mordin voice). Also I prefer having a wider range of story arcs available such as a FemShep/Garrus romance. Finally, and I left the most important til last. I play FemShep because she is the baddest ass Renegade in Mass Effect (given there is only a choice of two and as I said before I HATE Sheploo's voice).

Paragon Shep - Sheploo

Renegade Shep - Femshep

Paragade Shep - Never played as one, thouhg I probably will at some point.

Because I like to see women sexually harass men, instead of the other way around.

Mostly my main-char in RPG's is a male, as a impersonification of myself to dive into the world of the game.
I never had a fem-main.

But I enjoy playing female twinks.

I enjoy the eye-candy. I admit this flat reason.
I find myself moddeling my female characters to look like I picture the ideal woman: Nice curves(a lot of them, I know I'm terrible ;) ) and a face that's attractive and expresses intelligence and a kind nature.
And if I create a non-human female character, it's mostly out of pure curiosity: How are the character-animations, does the game change some things as a reaction to this specific character?
Or just because it could be an awesome and fun character to make, given the design I have in mind.

As for ME: I played a female Shepard out of curiosity.
In ME2 I found the possibility of the Garrus-romance very interesting. I wanted to see how this "tough guy"-character acted in a romance.
And to say it was good would be an understatement.
The romances with Garrus are such a fun to play.
Many times I just have to laugh or find myself "d'awww"-ing.

Why do you feel the need to relate to the character based on gender?  It's not like gender is essential to being a super space marine out to save the galaxy.

I played both as you get a different experience.  Plus, Mark Meer's voice acting in the first game was barely tolerable.

I've started out playing mostly femSheps in ME1 because, well, I tend to project myself into fictional worlds as a woman. Why, you'd have to ask a psychologist, I'm a straight male who prefers to play straight females, so f/f sex isn't a factor. I think one factor is that most heroes are male and I've always been attracted by breaking the conventions. Another may be that usually I find the female VA better.

I've only started playing maleSheps once ME2 was out, because of Miranda, and I will play a f/f romance with Samantha, but only because she's not available for maleShep. If it weren't for Miranda, all but one of my Shepards would be female.

For the sake of roleplaying I'd play a female character, y'know, if it mattered. But gender tends to make no difference whatsoever, really. It's literally the choice of boobs or no boobs, what little scraps of the story that are at all different don't really mean much.

With alot of RPG's I do try to put myself in the place of the character I create so for one the character needs to be male. The only time I only ever really play as a female character in any game is if i've already played the male options to death or its the only option. I just like to relate to the character i'm playing as.

There are many reasons why Males play Female characters just Females play Males.
Here are the top ten.
10. None of your dumb business. Eerr typical response when they think you calling them gay.
9. Questioning sexuality. Even thought it a small percent are it is the most thought of reason.
8. Bored.
7. The differences in Apparel look. Armors and outfits some time change so it cool to see new look.
6. The like female bodies (IE Female Character Fetish.) Most these players want boob sliders too.
5. Be cause on multiple play thru they want to change thing up.
4. The Dialogue is different because some races and character react different to M/F characters.
3. Lesbian Sex scenes. Sorry guys had to state this one.
2. If you run around as a Shepard for 20 plus hours. Who's ass do you want to stare at?
1. Females saving the Male dominated galaxy just seems right. It slap society for thinking they are weak.

While I don't think Hale is any better than Meer, she does have a different take on certain things. So it can be interesting to play FemShep. It just slightly alters my perception of certain things. Also I find it easier to distance myself from a female character, so I'm more likely to take renegade options I'd never take with a male Shepard. And finally, up until this game, it was the only way to romance Kaidan.

Can't speak for men really but I'm a woman and I identify more with a woman. From some of the men posting on the forums here many like to play as female shepard due to the voice, seeing something than some guy all the time. These are just some of the reasons I've seen posted but that isn't indicative of all male players.

I am not one for the forums but number 3 is a defo =l
The amount of times I've seen guys post about that.. Lovely to see them raging about a m/m romance but if it was f/f romance posted they wouldn't complain at all, not to seem sexist or anything but it's true, I've seen guys admit they only play as female for the 'lesbian sex scenes' and crap.

The old bull-crap logic with underlying other problems.

I roleplay Maleshepard (of course custom face, sculpted as best I could to look like me), it gives me true immersion.

I find it odd as well, I personally play a Male Shepard based off of what I look like (or close enough). To me RPG games are meant to be played with a character that is representative of you o-o. That and the LI's for femshep is ok, I mean Garrus is a bro but...My canon Shepard will always be the one who represents me (a guy).

But I suppose let ppl do what they will.

I know a lot of people like to roleplay and essentially become Shepard, and because of that, playing the Shep that reflects your gender makes sense.

For me, I feel like I'm am crafting my own ME story which each new Shepard. Each has a new background, personality, motivation, etc., that makes them unique. As such, playing as FemShep adds a totally new dimension to the ME story.

So pretty much, I enjoy playing FemShep because its fun, its different, and depending on your point of view, very compelling.

Especially with Mass Effect, I view it as not an extension of myself, but as molding the story of Shepard. I like strong women so Femshep makes for more of a compelling story in my book.

I really don't even know how I'll play Fallout as a male again. After staring at dat ass for hours on end, it's unpossible to go back!

Seriously, too many games have male protagonists, and what did you think female gamers were doing all this time? Playing the girl ones only?

Well aside from the obvious visual goodies, I like to experience all that the game has to offer. For ME in particular, that's the voice acting. Not playing femshep ever? You're missing an entire half of the game dialogue from your player character.
