Why do men like to play as a female Shepard?

Usually there are three reasons why men sometimes play as women:

1)  The porn factor.  If the game has F/F, certain kinds of men will always play as female for obvious reasons of titillation..

2)  Some men prefer to be detached from the main character as much as possible, and playing as a woman is just another expression of this detachment.

3)  Some males identify with a female character more than a male one, and always play female when given the opportunity.  These kind of males (not sure I would even call them men) tend to both fear and reject masculinity, and thus feel more comfortable playing as a woman.

I notice that a lot of male players seem to play as a female Commander Shepard. My friend told me that he prefers femdhep because Jennifer Hale is a better voice actor than Mark Meer (not sure if that's his name). But from what I've heard I wouldn't say her voice acting is particularly good. Even her role as Naomi in MGS4 I found lacking. I find males like to play a female character in other games too and I've never understood the motivation. If I have a choice I always choose a male character because, being a male, I feel I can relate to the character more or see myself in their role. So why do guys play as female characters?

I play both, but I decided on a female Shepard as my "canon" Shepard because I like Jennifer Hale's voice acting.  She's pretty darn good.  Meer has serious talent but his male Shepard voice doesn't do much for me.

*renegade opinion incoming*

The Voice acting in all Mass Effect games is pretty bad except for Liara and Legion. But Hale is a little less bad than Meer, and she has a more pleasant voice.

I will not lie, that is an important part for my FemShep preference as well.

I like her voice better :) I find the maleshep's voice bland and uninteresting. To me, Hale adds more depth and emotional range to Shepard.

Well part of it is Hale's voice acting.
But its also .... Whose ass do I rather look at an entire game?

ROFL.

I am one of those men who tend to play women in CRPGs. I'm very much a straight male and like it that way.

Maybe its because when you bed a woman in-game it's actually a lesbian scene. Most male gamers will find that very appealing.

There's a little too much 'reading between the lines' going on here!  Want to know why I think FemShep is the only Shepard to play as, and I say that as a dude?  The reasons are many and simple, and I talk about them here...

To be bluntly honest, one of the appealing aspects of female Shepard (me being a single straight man) is that she is a fictional person I can relate too (given I have control over her; thus she is what I want/seek) that fills the absence of a girlfriend or woman I can be with and spend my life with at the moment.

Its funny how some say its because they want to stare on ****** and ass, when most of the time you are supposed to stare down the iron sights on the bad guy.

I remember reading an interview with Greg Rucka many years ago that included a question about why he likes writing female characters. His answer was essentially that writing a female character in story that would traditionally star a male could change the nature of the piece, just by having a female protagonist running around doing all of the stuff that a male protagonist would do can reinvigorate a tired plotline because it feels different.

Mass Effect is a great game series either way, but running through with a female Shepard feels different from playing through with the male character. You mostly get treated the same way by characters, but you treat them differently - partially it's because of the game choices you might make and partially it's because the voice actors say their lines differently (an unconscious emphasis during a phrase can change it's meaning and will certainly change the way it's interpreted.)

For my part I probably have more games with the female character. Partially because I like Jennifer Hale's performance, but mostly because I like that no one gives a damn that she's female and it's nice to venue where we've overcome gender (and for that matter racial) politics and we can just focus on how much more awesome it looks to have a physically smaller character headbutt that krogan on Tuchanka in ME2.

I play female Shepard because I already went through all 3 games playing male.
And for me playing as female is somehow seeing her as a part of me, I don't know, a female part of me. It's not about "oh look boobs or ass" at all.

I play both male & fem shep. I prefer playing as femshep though. The reason why for me is because as someone who likes scifi novels, tv shows, and films; the main character is usually male. I have always wondered what would happen if Captain Kirk/Picard,Luke Skywalker, or Captain Malcolm Reynolds were female instead. Imagine the differences minor and major from a storyline perspective. As people who commented already, the difference in gender changes the way you interact with certain characters.

My first playthrough was with male shepard. My second was with femshep. I just like seeing how things play out, and how other characters react to a heroine.

I play both. I played a Male Shepard first, to romance Liara. Then I played a FemShep to Romance Garrus as he is an awesome character and I'd heard it was a great story. It was. I've always found that the voice actor for FemShep is better, she just has more emotion in her voice. Like a quiver when she is upset or angry compared to the male Shepard who seems a bit more bland. I guess thats just because women are more emotional than blokes but FemShep's voice is way more believable.

I guess it's voice acting. Whenever I tried a maleshep I got bored after 10' or so, just unlike with a femshep. Since all my ME2 and ME3 characters are imports, it' approx. five females and one male.

 I play both.

Male shep so i can self insert "LOOK AT ME! I'm kickin' ass and datin' liara!" sad i know

femshep because its GuRLS with GUNS, but i dont self insert "I'm gonna make out with this dood, score!" also because she's got more emotion in her tone: IE her talking to Kaiden vs manShep to ashley. World of difference.

There's plenty of games where guys play as girls.

TombRaider? Cammy/ChunLI?

Go to any japanese online rpg, and ALL of em are playing female chars.

I remember playing phantasy star online on a japanese server, and everyone was a short cute little avatar. Buncha pervs ;P

Ya know whats a little frightening? They plan on making a movie, which will basically establish a canon gender. With both sides being passionate, I can see this being a problem. :)

I'm just frightened that they're making a movie...

Because the male voice acting is horrible, and it's hard to make a good looking custom male Shep.

The reason the F/F always gets more press than M/M is simple.
In our lives we are taught majority of Females take Passive roles in the relationship and this means one must be aggressive. It is sad but this plays to 3 relation types. Males that are controllers, Males that are submissive, and Females who are Bi.
The M/M plays to 1 relation type. Men who are submissive. Most Males who are controllers usually want the submissive females so they thing males being submissive is deplorable. Female who are bi careless about M/M relations since they want F/F.
M/M even sometimes back F/F since it reinforces same sex sexuality.
