Better question is why do you care, in a single player game?

I notice that a lot of male players seem to play as a female Commander Shepard. My friend told me that he prefers femdhep because Jennifer Hale is a better voice actor than Mark Meer (not sure if that's his name). But from what I've heard I wouldn't say her voice acting is particularly good. Even her role as Naomi in MGS4 I found lacking. I find males like to play a female character in other games too and I've never understood the motivation. If I have a choice I always choose a male character because, being a male, I feel I can relate to the character more or see myself in their role. So why do guys play as female characters?

Because it is known that Jennifer Hale's voice acting is better. You don't get to hear lame stuff like:

"[Yelling]STEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEVE!!!!"
"I am okay"
"[Absolutely Calm] You sure?

Also, for female p.o.v.

And, of course, dat ass.

Hale is inferior in every way to Meer in this game. Meer sounds like a marine naturally. Hale sounds like a forced tomboy. I play Male Shepard because he is the real Shepard.

Because FemShep has a better voice-actor who emotes more credibly than ManShep, because Shepard is a very generic character and making her female makes her feel a bit more original, because I'm not going to feel like I'm this muscle-bound space marine no matter what I do, so there's no point trying to insert myself to the story, because FemShep reminds me of some of my favourite female action heroes, Ellen Ripley and Motoko Kusanagi, while ManShep doesn't remind me of anybody noteworthy, and finally because I rather watch someone attractive throughout the 100+ hours I play through the trilogy.

Well hhmmm. This is interesting from a Psychological view. You are say to Identify themselves as a different sex means they are not normal. Lets see, where do you get your facts. The term normal is perspective. the reason I state that is based off factors.

As usual on this forum, people fail to read and comprehend whats actually written and instead misquote using their own words .  I never said that identifying as a different sex says means they are not normal.  Those are your words, not mine.

If you can't read and comprehend plain english, then this is going to be tough.

If 55% of male players play a Female character and you play a Male character. This means you are not normal because Normal is based on views of the masses. You can not judge other players based on your thought process. It does not work.

Again, these are your own sentiments, not mine.  Don't attribute this nonsense to me OK?

Lets just stress players play Female character because they want too.

*shrugs*

PS: I am a straight submissive(to a point) male and I play a kick ass Female Character. Reason because that is type of women I want to marry so either you could deal with it or can't I do not care.

Sounds to me like you're trying to validate your decision to play as a female character Image IPB

Why would anybody feel the need to validate it? It's my game, I can play whatever, whoever and how ever I want.

but it's apparently normal for women to identify more with male characters because... that's all we usually get to play??? What?

Please don't misquote me.  I never said, or even alluded that playing as a character of the opposite sex means you identify with that character..

I love Tomb Raider games, doesn't mean I identify with Lara Croft.

Nothing wrong with male leads. I love JC/Nameless one/Adam Jensen/Kratos/etc. But I don't identify with any of those characters, not even Femshep. They are their own people. I get to play their story, but I NEVER think of myself as Shepard, and I never think of myself as any character regardless of gender. Similar to following a male character in a book.

Indeed.  I alread mentioned this in my earlier post.  Just substitute men with women and point number 2 would apply to you.

Presumably men can do the same and just say, "I'm playing as Commander Shep, someone who happens to be a woman, it's her story not mine, even though I shape that story" rather than "hai guyz I pretending to be a womanz!!!"

People must have an incredibly short memory, or poor reading comprehension skills, because I already mentioned this several pages ago.. Image IPB

It's hardly normal to identify with a gender more than a character.

Really?  Then why do the majority of Mass Effect players play one gender more than the other?

I can buy the VA argument, although I would also say that they should have got someone else to voice the SWTOR female republic trooper and that chick from Bulletstorm.

But the main reason for me is that Shepard's actions are 10% (at least) more entertaining when done by the Femshep.

I dont see why it matters, I am sure there are a number of women who play male characters. I could see why this might matter to an adolescent when they pickup the game but not adults.

I find that the writing for female characters often has more interesting scenarios and lines myself. I flipped my cover day 1, perhaps there next game features a female lead.

You are saying that playing female character should somehow be "validated", and that the female character is somehow inferior to the male.

Usually there are three reasons why men sometimes play as women:

1)  The porn factor.  If the game has F/F, certain kinds of men will always play as female for obvious reasons of titillation..

2)  Some men prefer to be detached from the main character as much as possible, and playing as a woman is just another expression of this detachment.

3)  Some males identify with a female character more than a male one, and always play female when given the opportunity.  These kind of males (not sure I would even call them men) tend to both fear and reject masculinity, and thus feel more comfortable playing as a woman.

So damn true this thread proves it Image IPB

How on Earth you reached that conclusion from that sentence of mine, I don't know Image IPB

The reason I said that was because Mcblunt was going out of his way to explain why he plays as a female.  This was what I was responding to:

Thats a lot of personal information, so thats why I said it seemed as though he was trying to validate his decision, although there's no reason for him to do that.

Either way, you are going on about how "inferior" the female Shepard is for some reason. What you are trying to get from this, I have no idea.
