Lots of my friends play as female characters and I could never bring myself to do it, it just felt weird.

Previously with ME games Hale completely put me off. That and the fact that the animations for both male and female characters are 99% identical, so FemShep ends up gesticulating and moving like some kind of genderless man-lady.

Recently started an ME3 playthrough as FemShep though, her lines are more nuanced and tinged with emotion, to me it seems as if the writing was specifically tailored to her, and vice versa in ME2.

Either way, you are going on about how "inferior" the female Shepard is for some reason. What you are trying to get from this, I have no idea.

Now I am saying female Shepard is inferior?  I'm not even going to ask you to quote me this time, because now I know you're just making things up and intentionally misquoting me. Image IPB

I hate this distinction between gender, female shep is not inferior to male Shep to all. Shepard is a blank slate to which the player makes their own.

This reminds me of an incident I had at uni, we were reading a novel and the teacher asked me how I related to the female character, and if I found it difficult because of her personlity.

To which I replied, I don't relate to her well--unlike ___ she is ___. He then said, but she is a female character--so suely you can relate to her? I then said, why aren't you asking the boys in class how they relate to her--why only the women? I then said, I related to ___ more than ___, regardless of gender. Just because a character is MALE it does not mean that I, a woman can't relate to them--and just because a character shares my gender--it doesn't mean I HAVE to relate to them.

Hmm, looks like I have to apologise. It was a different guy with an icon identical with yours. That's the trouble with these forums, you can't tell people apart with a glance.

Jennifer Hale - she's the superior voice talent, IMO, so I play as her version. If the role was reversed, I'd play as the male.

Usually there are three reasons why men sometimes play as women:

1)  The porn factor.  If the game has F/F, certain kinds of men will always play as female for obvious reasons of titillation..

2)  Some men prefer to be detached from the main character as much as possible, and playing as a woman is just another expression of this detachment.

3)  Some males identify with a female character more than a male one, and always play female when given the opportunity.  These kind of males (not sure I would even call them men) tend to both fear and reject masculinity, and thus feel more comfortable playing as a woman.

So damn true this thread proves it Image IPB

No way, the first reason maybe a point to some, but the other two reasons are nothing but amateur psychology.
Why did you choose the big bad dominant Krogan for your Avatar, are you trying to compensate something?

This isn't a serious question, I'm just saying that to show how simple it is to draw conclusions of this kind.

Not sure what you're getting at here.  Are you saying that there aren't any guys on here that play FemShep detachedly?  You would be quite incorrect in that..  Playing detachedly is actually very common in both sexes, especially in non RPG titles.

On the flipside, people that invest aspects of themselves in their characters would find it harder to play a character of the opposite sex.  I'm like that, in that I play Shepard as if he were me and vice versa.

As for number three, that was an observation I've made after seeing countless of these threads on the forum.  In fact, one member even admitted that one of the main reasons he played as FemShep was because he didn't want to play as someone he would feel intimidated by in real life (referring to MaleShep).

I'm always amazed at people actually dropping by without reading any of the comments to share their godlike wisdom with contructive one liners.

I think as a player myself that prefers a female Shepard over a male Shepard, really has to do with bonding with the character. Males usually bond with females. Usually by natural instinct. Now I feel that guys also like looking at the opposite gender they are attracted to unless you are gay! This isn't weird or pervish as young teenagers make it to seem like. It is just chemistry! I don't see why this even a topic? Yet the battle continues on why guys prefer to use female Shepard?

I play as a male because I play as myself. Your bonding theory is quite interesting however. It explains why I seem to prefer the female squadmates/party members in games like Dragon Age/Mass Effect.

So what if men play as femshep? What is the problem exactly? The person who think there's a problem with this reveals much about himself.

There really isn't any problem with it. Its just with some games IE: Oblivion the male playerbase goes to far with it and mods there characters into looking like something out of hentai. These kind of players are looked down upon, its unfortunate that people associate all males who play as females with them.

I am happy that you find my bonding theory quite interesting. However I find your statement quite interesting as well. When most males say they make a male character to play themselves. How is that possible? Do you explore galaxies or fight off Rachni or travel on a spaceship that is called the Normandy? It is kinda of silly for male egotistical gamers to think they are normal. I am not saying you are in any of the least of those male gamers who think that way. Yet I do find when a macho cool jo male thinks they are playing themselves by sporting a male avatar in a video game makes them normal other than the male who sports on a female avatar! Knowing that both will be doing the exact types of things you would be doing in that game! It is just a matter of prospective!

Because I have no delusions about me being the character I control and I prefer the company of females to males.

Well, in this case those who do such a thing also reveal much about themselves, onlookers can do nothing but laugh. ;)

Because roles designed to be believable for a male or a female are generally the best roles for females, as opposed to roles made for females. They're great characters, but not because I Am Woman, Hear Me Roar. It's because they're just plain heroes, exactly the same as a man could do, but not pointing that fact out exactly, and I really wish more games offered such protagonists. It's always too focused on the very fact that they're female, but there are two extremes: obviously made for males and badass/sexy, and the other, though much less common, focuses way way too much on the fact that they're a woman and oh look how capable they are, you sexist pig.

Just gimme a person, a hero. I don't exactly prefer to use females when I can simply because they're females, but because my game collection is really really lacking for believable female protagonists.

1) I just didn't like the look of the available male Shepards in ME1
2) I also didn't feel like looking at a guy's butt half the time when I could also opt for ****** & ass and a face carefully created by me to be interesting to look at
3) Lesbian romance options, twice the fun!
4) Have you seen my Shepard in that dress Kasumi gave her?
5) Great voice acting by Jennifer Hale, but since I've never really played with a manshep, I wouldn't want to say that Mark Meer's voice acting is any less impressive, just that I've never felt the need to compare
6) Male heros are already aplenty, so playing a female once in a while if fun
7) Why not? I played Tomb Raider as well (loved her screams when I threw her off a cliff on purpose after she failed following my instructions for the umpteenth time) and why would that be weird?

Well said, an individual's heroic deeds should have nothing to do with his or her gender role.

Its all about role playing. Obviously I've never explored other planets, what I mean by that is I pick the choices based on what I would do if I was in that given situation. Why don't I role play as women? Simple, I don't think like a woman. Plus females can't romance Tali, so that rules out femshep for me entirely.
