That's beside the point, playing most rpg's leads to watching an ass move in front of you half the time (unless you zoom out or around or something), if I have to watch it anyway, then I prefer to at last watch a female bottom.

1) I just didn't like the look of the available male Shepards in ME1
2) I also didn't feel like looking at a guy's butt half the time when I could also opt for ****** & ass and a face carefully created by me to be interesting to look at
3) Lesbian romance options, twice the fun!
4) Have you seen my Shepard in that dress Kasumi gave her?
5) Great voice acting by Jennifer Hale, but since I've never really played with a manshep, I wouldn't want to say that Mark Meer's voice acting is any less impressive, just that I've never felt the need to compare
6) Male hero's are already aplenty, so playing a female once in a while if fun
7) Why not? I played Tomb Raider as well (loved her screams when I threw her off a cliff on purpose after she failed following my instructions for the umpteenth time) and why would that be weird?

2. Why are you looking at his butt anyway? Reasons like this are just plain stupid.

I like Jennifer Hale's voice acting better.
Also, the majority of games I own have mandatory male protagonists, so I grab the chance to do something different whenever I can

When playing any game where the camera view is mostly third person, the butt is usually quite visible.

Really? I barely noticed in ME2 or ME3. I his back is in view of the camera, the only times his butt is really visible is while sprinting or rolling. Again why are you staring at it? Usually when doing these actions there are more impt things to look at like all the crap thats shooting at you.

No way, the first reason maybe a point to some, but the other two reasons are nothing but amateur psychology.
Why did you choose the big bad dominant Krogan for your Avatar, are you trying to compensate something?

This isn't a serious question, I'm just saying that to show how simple it is to draw conclusions of this kind.

Not sure what you're getting at here.  Are you saying that there aren't any guys on here that play FemShep detachedly?  You would be quite incorrect in that..  Playing detachedly is actually very common in both sexes, especially in non RPG titles.

On the flipside, people that invest aspects of themselves in their characters would find it harder to play a character of the opposite sex.  I'm like that, in that I play Shepard as if he were me and vice versa.

As for number three, that was an observation I've made after seeing countless of these threads on the forum.  In fact, one member even admitted that one of the main reasons he played as FemShep was because he didn't want to play as someone he would feel intimidated by in real life (referring to MaleShep).

I'm not saying (or didn't mean to say) that no one  plays a femshep for those reasons, the post and your response made it seem as if those are the only three reasons you would play a female character as a male.

Which I don't believe, not at all.
I'm not intimidated by strong men, rather I can look pretty intimidating myself if I want to in RL.
I also don't play female characters because I want to see lesbian sex (I don't mind it, but it is certainly not the reason) and I defnitely don't feel detached at all, I'm always deeply immersed in the games I play, no matter what gender I choose.

I play both male and femshep, but I play more femshep. Somehow I think it is more interesting to  play from a female pov, probably because usually of course I only have the male pov.

I think as a player myself that prefers a female Shepard over a male Shepard, really has to do with bonding with the character. Males usually bond with females. Usually by natural instinct. Now I feel that guys also like looking at the opposite gender they are attracted to unless you are gay! This isn't weird or pervish as young teenagers make it to seem like. It is just chemistry! I don't see why this even a topic? Yet the battle continues on why guys prefer to use female Shepard?

I play as a male because I play as myself. Your bonding theory is quite interesting however. It explains why I seem to prefer the female squadmates/party members in games like Dragon Age/Mass Effect.

I am happy that you find my bonding theory quite interesting. However I find your statement quite interesting as well. When most males say they make a male character to play themselves. How is that possible? Do you explore galaxies or fight off Rachni or travel on a spaceship that is called the Normandy? It is kinda of silly for male egotistical gamers to think they are normal. I am not saying you are in any of the least of those male gamers who think that way. Yet I do find when a macho cool jo male thinks they are playing themselves by sporting a male avatar in a video game makes them normal other than the male who sports on a female avatar! Knowing that both will be doing the exact types of things you would be doing in that game! It is just a matter of prospective!

Its all about role playing. Obviously I've never explored other planets, what I mean by that is I pick the choices based on what I would do if I was in that given situation. Why don't I role play as women? Simple, I don't think like a woman. Plus females can't romance Tali, so that rules out femshep for me entirely.

I need to correct you your statement here because I think you got it confused. You don't need to be a woman to play as a woman. You don't need to think like a woman to play as a woman? Where did you get that impression? Do I need to be a Krogan to know what a Krogan is feeling like? No, my personality or imagination takes cares of the rest! Your imagination assumes the personalities of the characters that you play. I think that is a misconformed idea of gamers  today! A female can easily assume the imagination of a character that is male. You are thinking too much of your natural reproductive urges than anything else! When a person reads a book, they are assuming all these characters male and female. I think once you understand that it might be easier for you to play as a female character without thinking you need to be a actual female to play the part!

And besides... I'm trying to focus on the game. It's not like I have Kelly Chambers in my room to perform lap dances lol. I play males btw :-) just supporting those female protagonists. I play females too, but it's like a 10:1 ratio xD

I just can't do it. I like to make these kind of games personal. The characters I play in RPGs are always extensions of myself. No I'm not basing this on reproductibe urges, the only romances options I ever pick are Liara and Tali. I can't say I chose Tali because of any urges, that was more of a emotional connection. Come on, I didn't even know what she looked like back then. I don't like playing as others, I like playing as myself and this is one of the only games out there that allows me to do that.

Actually, when you walk around normally, which is most of the time as the shooting never does last long if you do it right, the view of the main character is from behind. This is the case in almost any third person game. The butt is -also- visible. It is not that I'm staring at it, it is just there. Man's butt? Couldn't care less. Woman's butt? Nice! If those are my options, the choice isn't that difficult. To me, there is just no advantage to playing with a male Shepard and there are some advantages to playing a female Shepard.

BTW, this is about guys playing femsheps, what our reasons are, not about you defending playing with a male Shepard or me saying guys who play a male Shepard must be gay because omg, guy butt! These are my reasons and I'm just being honest about it. You do what you like and play a male Shepard, I do what I like and occasionally look at a digitized girl's butt. ;)

My archetypal hero is the young female warrior. It is not longer the Knight in shining armour.

When I play Femshep, I am watching the scene from a 3rd person perspective. I do not see myself as being her. So i do not imagine being her.

I am not the hero. I am more an observer.

Apert from that it is just simply pleasing esthetically to watch a female protagonist.

Erm, why not ? Can't a female be the hero ? Can't she be the badass that saves everyone asses ? I don't know, I feel better playing female characters, knowing how lots of people prefer playing male characters because they're big and goddamn male, it makes my play time with a female character even better. Oh, and yeah, FemShap/Liara romance, definetly, hands down.

PS I'm a brony. *brohoof*

True there isn't anything wrong with it. There have been many games in the past with strong female protagonists. Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Parasite Eve, to name a few.

Voice acting is infinitely better, I'd rather stare at a woman for the 6-8 hours I usually play a day, and the few games that let you play as a female are usually crap so I take advantage of being able to play as a female character in a great game.

I can guarantee that most male gamers especially in RPG genre have played the female elf:). I think since gaming has really gone mainstream lately, it will take the rest of the world to understand the gamers mind a little longer!

When I tell people I play as female characters like Shepard, I get the eww you must be weird or gay remarks. In reality I am just a normal guy that might just kill you if you said that to my face LOL No just kidding but really! It may take the next 100 years for people to stop talking about this like its taboo or something?

It felt like you were trying to screw with my mind. The gender thing does not bother me, I've played female characters before its just in these type of games I role play myself into the universe. It just makes it more personal. Wait your a guy? Sorry, I thought you were a female. That Liara avatar must've thrown me off or something.

are you serious you look at my Liara avatar and assume I am a female? You have a long way of growing up my son!

Also your nicely formatted writing style. Most males don't bother, myself included.

and I defnitely don't feel detached at all, I'm always deeply immersed in the games I play, no matter what gender I choose.

When I said detached, I didn't mean you're not immersed in the game.  What I meant was, you're detached from the character, ie you don't invest any of your personality or character traits into the character.

Like one poster said, it's as though you're observing the character, who is a separate entity altogether from yourself.

I play both male and femshep, but I play more femshep. Somehow I think it is more interesting to  play from a female pov, probably because usually of course I only have the male pov.

And yet there is no female specific POV in the Mass Effect series.  FemShep plays exactly the same as MaleShep with the exception of who you're able to romance and flirt with, plus a scant few gender specific lines from NPCs ie Harkin.  The dialogues are pretty much exactly the same for both sexes otherwise..

In fact, I would go so far as to say that the games themselves were primarily written for a male protagonist dialogue wise..

I find this offensive to our homosexual brethren.

In which way?

Because he didn't write all heterosexual men are lesbian inside?

Yes.

Exactly this is what I was going for to support my reasons for not playing fem shep.

So what if men play as femshep? What is the problem exactly? The person who think there's a problem with this reveals much about himself.

There really isn't any problem with it. Its just with some games IE: Oblivion the male playerbase goes to far with it and mods there characters into looking like something out of hentai. These kind of players are looked down upon, its unfortunate that people associate all males who play as females with them.

I wouldnt look down upon such players. I find it worthy of respect to happily admit that you like nude women, and I also find it a lot less disturbing than if someone says they DONT like nude women (as long as they look good, of course, but I have never seen a nudemod with fat bodytypes).

I wish I could admit it myself. Sadly I preferred my women wearing Daedric Full-body armor in Oblivion and Skyrim. Except for the helmet they look great.

Theres nothing wrong with nude women. But the modding communities for Elder Scrolls games take it a little to far. Their characters end up becoming very unrealistic. The things they do are a little to perverted.
