I notice that a lot of male players seem to play as a female Commander Shepard. My friend told me that he prefers femdhep because Jennifer Hale is a better voice actor than Mark Meer (not sure if that's his name). But from what I've heard I wouldn't say her voice acting is particularly good. Even her role as Naomi in MGS4 I found lacking. I find males like to play a female character in other games too and I've never understood the motivation. If I have a choice I always choose a male character because, being a male, I feel I can relate to the character more or see myself in their role. So why do guys play as female characters?

Here is something: Interestingly, the immersion factor is present with all classes and genders and races and species. It just takes longer to build up the connection, compared to a character who is similar to the player in question.

I just found that out by consistently playing a redhead badass lesbo chick in multiple games and i can definitely feel something. I suspect playing ME3-Turian and Skyrim-Argonian would lead to a similar result.

Hale's voice acting is way worse, she tries so hard it sounds really fake. I don't really understand why people like it so much lol. To each their own.

Honestly, I dont know any women that play male Shepard. Id be interested to hear some reasons that women who do play guy Shep choose to do so.

I'd rather stare at ManShep's leather jacket when playing a game for 30+ hours than overalls.

So that's how you get the leather jacket, I wondered if it was a preorder!

Of course, FemShep has the cocktail dress, which allows cleavage shots (Epic Win, My FemShep isn't shy about her body).

Because it is different. My home made Shep is Shepard to me, hell I usually go "That is not Shepard" when I see the vanilla one in the adverts, and I also think Mark Meer is a much much better VOA than Jennifer Hale is. That being said she has gotten better.

I play her to see a change in dialogue mostly.

Here is a question--when you got Mass Effect 3 did you keep male shep boxart or flip it to fem Shep?

Flipped.

In video games store when bored I flip half the covers of the rentals too.

I choose FemShep because, TBH, I enjoy playing as the alternate gender.

I was born male straight, and still am. But if I could flip gender every now and then at will, to see the other side, hells YES I would do that.

Until they make those robobodies from Surrogates (http://en.wikipedia....rrogates_(film)) this is the closest I get.

I also play BoyShep after FemShep, just to see what I missed.

:lol::lol:

I like many find Jennifer Hales voice acting to be much better than the man sheps but also attraction does come into it, you can build a near perfect bad ass woman to play as and since your gonna be staring at that character for around 40 hours per game that can not bea bad thing.

on top of that though there is the fact that as a gamer i have always chosen the female characters when given a choice because they used to be (not so much anymore) the weaker but faster choice in games for combat and that is something that has passed on through the years to the point where i automatically choose the female when playing

i dig the femshep. If i am given the option of playing as a female character in a game...i will take the female over the male everytime. It is about separation for me. Im the dude in rl...so why i wanna be a dude in a fantasy rworld...hawt chics that kickbutt are awesome...so long as they are well written and not trying to be over the top and badder than the baddest dude around...(lots of Hollywood flicks go too far with the woman competing in a man's world with the only way to beat them is either by being more of a woman than they can handle or more manly than the men)..especially for a f/f romance option is available!!!

Hale's voice-acting has been far more consistent through all three games. I like the sci-fi action chick motif as well (Ripley from Aliens, Sara Conner from Terminator 2, LeeLoo from the Fifth Element) and I have PLENTY of games where I'm forced to play the male action hero, so I gave Female Shepard a shot at first and fell in love with the character as a woman, so much so that it's almost jarring for me to play as MShep.

I play both male and female. The male for more of a role-play experience. The female, well, in all honestly I like creating hot femsheps and seeing how they work out in game. The femshep also has greater humour potential when faced with a galaxy of alpha-male bullsh*t, and she's the one getting it done. Witness femshep nutting a Krogan in ME2. Priceless.

That's freakin genius. We should start a femshepinist movement and do it all over the world.

I'm surprised by all those answers "because I want to look at hot body", because female Shepard has very average body and for 90% of time you don't see anything because she wears armor. Also her moves are totally asexually.

So nice try, girls-wanabe.

Last sentence was a joke ;).

when I play m Shepard (which I do most of the time) I find it hard to disconnect my personality from my actions within the game because I more feel like I'm Shepard. I just can't play all renegade before disconnecting my personality from Shep by choosing femshep.

Aver88:

It was much sexier in ME1. It got progressively un-sexy as the series progressed. By ME3, I just played femshep because most of my saves were femshep.

Can't speak to ME2 or ME3, for the most part, but FemShep in ME was worth it just to hear the "serve under me" line used on Kaiden. LOL

I will tell you now that I prefer Mark Meer's voice acting in the games, but I don't think there is anything wrong with Jennifer Hale, aside from maybe sounding like she is trying too hard to be gruff sometimes.

And I am a guy and have thus far played 100% Male Sheppard, custom face, because quite honestly, it was kind of a way to try living the adventure a little moreand make me connect with my decisions. But that's me :wizard:

My very first FemShep I spend a LOT of time on the face creation.  She was incredible.  A red-headed alibaster-skinned beauty.

In ME2, the options weren't quite the same, and I never managed to reproduce what I did in that first FemShep.

oh and the male creation was rubbish. (without Mods)

Another Note why did my import look different from ME1-2?

I play a femshep to explore all the nuances of the alternative. Plus women are infinitely more aesthetically pleasing than the dudes. (it's the hips!)

Just wanted to affirm what I said pages ago;

I was playing ME3 yesterday, FemShep of course, and my 6 yo daughter strolls by. She glances at the TV and says, "Girls can kick butts!" She then went in her room and played with a bunch of Star Wars toys for almost an hour.

Mission Accomplished! :)

Some guys play manshep so they can relate to the character more, others play femshep for eye candy.

This old argument always leads to one side being called gays and the other cross-dressers.
