I've played a lot of games where you are a female so I don't really overthink it. It would be weird to have a male LI though. Lesbianism all the way.

You still get to see femshep scantily clad. It's not that weird. Plus the romance scenes are decidely PG-rated.

Male Shepard's voice actor is pretty bland. While femshep isn't anything amazing it is an improvement.

I notice that a lot of male players seem to play as a female Commander Shepard. My friend told me that he prefers femdhep because Jennifer Hale is a better voice actor than Mark Meer (not sure if that's his name). But from what I've heard I wouldn't say her voice acting is particularly good. Even her role as Naomi in MGS4 I found lacking. I find males like to play a female character in other games too and I've never understood the motivation. If I have a choice I always choose a male character because, being a male, I feel I can relate to the character more or see myself in their role. So why do guys play as female characters?

Most of my playthroughs are male but I do do a female playthrough as renegade just to see the other dalog options.

also, lesban relationshiips are cool

Because a certain character doesn't go for men and that accent...

I don't play Shepard as me, it's more like I'm creating a character....so sometimes I wanna watch an epic space story about this really nice half-asian guy, sometimes it's the coldhearted action girl, sometimes the tough latino, sometimes the caring black woman, sometimes Tali is romanced, sometimes Liara, sometimes Thane, I have a lesbian with the hots for Kelly and I certainly will make two more Shepards for Traynor and Cortez...it's just diversity. I'm a straight, white european and I'm nothing like any of my Shepards. Doesn't keep me from enjoying them. I don't see the voice acting as a reason. I play as female Shepards as well because the option is there. That's about it.

Well you've covered it a lot in your post.

I find Jennifer Hale provides a better voice. I don't think that Mark Meer is bad but he comes across as quite emotionless as Shepard, which is surprising to me as he is so good in other voice roles.

Also I find playing as a female character makes me role play a little more. When I play as male characters I find myself making the choices I'd make in that situation, rather than the choices that the character would make. I find I get far more variation when playing as a female character because I'm not acting as myself.

My parents always wanted a daughter and so despite being born male, I was raised as a female. Although I was allowed to wear jeans everything else about my life was kept particularly feminine. By a stroke of bad luck (or good for my parents), I have a rare condition that prevents hair grown on my chest and arms which in turn combined with my already skinny figure made it hard to believe that I was anything but a girl. I wore earnings, lipstick the whole shebang. I played with Barbie and My Little Pony instead of Transformers.

As I got older, my parents found a happy medium where I would pretend to be a tomboy and thus to keep certain male centered interests without it seeming weird. I accepted my fate, my future life as a woman not a man and began exploring fiction which featured strong female protagonists and Mass Effect has been the most recent addition. The games taught me what it means to be a strong, independent woman living in a man's world. I am in my 20's now and for the past few months have been undergoing extensive surgery to turn myself female. My reproductive organs have been switched, sporting a socket as opposed to a plug (lol!) and am also the proud owner of a fantastic pair of breasts.

Playing Mass Effect as a female Shepard also taught me what to expect romantically (as did other fiction) although considering Liara and the fact that I don't trust hormone changes to make me become a female in mind as well as in body. I might just go lesbian in real life. That opens another can of worms hwoever. On one hand I would be fullfilling a perversion shared my many but my parents may not be so forward and accepting. Let's see how this plays out. Or who knows... I may even fall in love with a guy... like that James Vega... mmmm!

Why? What are your reasons?

Basically sexualizing and fantasizing from guys acting like pigs. (welcome to the gamer culture!)

I play as Male Shep because I'm a guy, like Meer's voice (actually sounds like a military officer) and bisexual (So I get the best of both worlds anyway, Cortez and Kaidan are just as good as Liara and Taylor)

I don't. Hale sucks, and the thought of some sort of uber female Commander saving the galaxy makes me lol.

Jennifer Hale is one baddass renegade chick. Also Mark Meers dialogue feels RUSHED and FORCED. I've tried so many time to play manshep to romance tali, but i just cant get passed his voice acting.

Also if im going to play an RPG where i can make choices about my charcter i always pick chick. Then design the kinda chick i like(always evil renege.. Italian or Elven) And then just be badass cause its fun.

I play femshep because I get tired of how every badass protagonist or hero in every book I read, movie I see, and game I play is always a man. It is refreshing getting to see a woman kick ass for once without also getting insanely sexualized (like Bayonetta is as well as Yuna, Rikku, and Paine in Final Fantasy X-2, for example).

These threads always scream "I have insecurities that I need justified" to me. I love strong women and there is no finer example than FemShep. I love beautiful women and I can make her incredibly beautiful to boot. I love romance and the fact that she can romance Liara is just an incredible bonus.

I also like to disconnect myself from the characters in games I play because I play them to escape me and an easy way to do that is to play a female. I've even had a femShep romance Kaidan in ME1. You know what that means to me personally? Nothing. I am quite comfortable in my heterosexuality and I don't need be 'afraid' to play a VIDEO GAME as a female, or even have her romance a male because IT IS A GAME. I played ME2 with 3 male and 3 female Shepards, my femSheps all stayed loyal to Liara and my maleSheps romanced Tali, Jack (who I believe has the most beautiful face in the game) and Miranda, for flavour. Still love the overall Liara romance the best although I have a soft spot for Jack. Garrus is the best bromance though, by far, even for femShep. Their bro-date on the Citadel brought tears to my eyes.

Besides, personally, I love Jen Hale's voice acting work. Who didn't fall in love with Bastila?

I'm a bi shep player (that comes off so wrong). Seriously, I play my male gender and romance the ladies, but I usually have one woman in offline games just to see how it goes. My females are usually darker or renegade (like Jack) because I like being a nice guy so I don't usually see the dark side.

My femshep can not be recreated without the upcoming patch. Goth vampiress looking. Really about making women both beautiful and unique. Combined with Hale's voice, you can really make a tough women in this game. The women in my family taught me women aren't subservient princesses men fantasize about.

I really should just type up something once and copy/paste it as often as these threads surface.

Males who play males = See themselves in the game playing the part, therefore choose same gender
Males playing females = See the character in the game as a unique character(as in NOT themselves) and tend to choose the gender they are attracted to most.

Same goes for females, however, females will tend to choose their own gender most even if they don't use the character as a proxy for themselves. They just tend to explore the character that would act in a way different than their own personality.

You guys have some good reasons. I apologize for the repeat post apparently, I don't use the forums very often and there wasn't a femshep topic on the first page so I didn't think it was talked about too much. I guess the real reason I find it strange is because ( I know it's sexist and video games aren't real ) but, I don't find a female hero to be realistic. Whenever I think of someone who would be able to save the galaxy it would have to be a man because women are typically weaker and more emotional. So there feminists rage all you want, but that's why I asked.

I play as a male Shepard, though I do play female characters from time to time as I like experiencing the game from new viewpoints.
