Just wanted to affirm what I said pages ago;
I was playing ME3 yesterday, FemShep of course, and my 6 yo daughter strolls by. She glances at the TV and says, "Girls can kick butts!" She then went in her room and played with a bunch of Star Wars toys for almost an hour.
Mission Accomplished!

I also prefer Hale's voice acting, but Meer's work is fine, so it isn't really that big of a factor.

I find males like to play a female character in other games too and I've never understood the motivation. If I have a choice I always choose a male character because, being a male, I feel I can relate to the character more or see myself in their role. So why do guys play as female characters?
This topic comes up quite often in various game boards and i still hold the view that it's merely a difference in how people play. People who like to play "as" the character prefer character of thier own gender, naturally. Those, like me, how play "with" the character go either way.
The character in Mass Effect i don't treat any differently than a fighter jet in a flight sim or a car in a racing game, just the pawn i control in the game. So it might as well be pretty.
So i'll keep using Sukhois and females

I notice that a lot of male players seem to play as a female Commander Shepard. My friend told me that he prefers femdhep because Jennifer Hale is a better voice actor than Mark Meer (not sure if that's his name). But from what I've heard I wouldn't say her voice acting is particularly good. Even her role as Naomi in MGS4 I found lacking. I find males like to play a female character in other games too and I've never understood the motivation. If I have a choice I always choose a male character because, being a male, I feel I can relate to the character more or see myself in their role. So why do guys play as female characters?
Across the ME trilogy, I have somewhere between 10 and 14 Shepards. Only three of them are guys. There are several reasons for this. For one thing, my "canon" shepard is a man and he is the only one whom I play as a representation of myself -- or a higher me. The others, even the guys, are different roles or characters that I decide will be a certain way and then build them according to that role. So, aside from the very real eye-candy factor (i've heard other guys scoff at this, like they think you're hiding some desire to be a woman or something. that's not the case, for me anyway), it's easier for me to do some things as a female character than as a man. For example, I tend to play the higher me as a good guy. It's easier for me to be a total ****hole if I'm playing as a woman. I suppose that's because I feel even more removed from the avatar, so don't feel like I'm going against my true self.
Yet another consideration is that some classes feel more like "female" classes, in my mind. Maybe that's sexist but when I think of infiltrators and sentinels, I think of women, since I know there are many female miltary people in the ME universe. When I think of vanguards and soldiers, I think of men.
Finally, the game changes some depending on whether your Shepard is female or male, so I don't want to miss any content.

Because some men are so terrified of male sexuality and they are so adamant on sexualizing women that they simply must play a female character.
OH GOD I LOOKED AT A MAN'S BUTT DURING A GAME, DOES THAT MEAN I'M GAY!?!?!?
I can't imagine an adult man with sense using the "I'd rather look at a female butt than a male butt" excuse.
That is so absurd, that only a child or teen could come up with it. I mean, who actually looks at the butt of their character when playing a game?
And even if you did, there's nothing to see since it's covered by clothing or armor.
Ironically, I bet it's these same guys that froth at the mouth whenever Bioware sexualizes any of their female characters
What, you don't like to look at scantily clad women? Oh, my mistake!

How is the butt argument an excuse? And what is it an excuse for? that's one reason -- but just one -- that I have more femsheps than male shepards. What is it that you allege I'm covering up? I don't get it.
ETA: Oh, wait, you question whether a man would look at the butt of an avatar that's right in front of his face for at least 40 hours. It sounds like you are not a man. I could be wrong.

If we start to go down that road, I guess I shouldn't play as white guys either because I'm not white.

Sashimi taco, let me understand this correctly. There are guys who actually want to play as femshep and rather than be happy about that, you decide to attack them as homophobes for it? Really?
Wow.
Eh, you guys. Its not about playing a femshep. Its about playing something different than a generic male soldier. I dont really care what, but a generic male soldier class bores me to death instantly. Too bad ME doesnt allow alien playable characters.

The same reason a woman might make a male Shepard, for eye candy or they like the voice acting or they just wanna experience all the game's content and dialogue options.

Haven't you been reading this thread? I haven't said the butt arguement is an excuse. It's been used as an "excuse" however by a large number of the guys that play FemShep primarily. Such a silly reason could never be the real explanation, because it doesn't even make sense, hence why it's an "excuse," and a childish one at that.

I am a man, but I'm not cross eyed like the rest of you since my eyes don't drift downward when playing video games.
Even if I were cross eyed, there's nothing to see any way.

Anyway, so you're saying these FemShep players in reality wish they were women and playing FemShep gives them the ability to experience being a woman without having to cross dress, or become transgendered or transexual..
Makes sense......a lot more than the butt "excuse" to be sure
