In truth, some men may find such characters (or people) damn near terrifying.

Well, not my case(since I easily identify with playing dude characters) but I am not sure if I understand you correctly.

Terrified as in... male players feeling threatened by these "strong" archetypes thus not being able to identify or something?:o

Sorry if I didn't get it, english ain't my mother language. Reading comprehension and all that stuff blah blah, I think you'll know:lol:

I mostly play as a ManShep (being male myself), but when i do play femshep its for 2 simple reasons:
1) To witness different dialogue
2) If I'm going to be spending the next 30 hours staring at someone's ass, it may as well be a nice feminine one.

I notice that a lot of male players seem to play as a female Commander Shepard. My friend told me that he prefers femdhep because Jennifer Hale is a better voice actor than Mark Meer (not sure if that's his name). But from what I've heard I wouldn't say her voice acting is particularly good. Even her role as Naomi in MGS4 I found lacking. I find males like to play a female character in other games too and I've never understood the motivation. If I have a choice I always choose a male character because, being a male, I feel I can relate to the character more or see myself in their role. So why do guys play as female characters?

well I'm a hetero male and I prefer women to men, don't know about you.

Uh..huh.

Anyway.

The point is, in the world of sci-fi (which this is), be it games or movies, how often is an archetype fitting femShep used?

I challenge you to find one besides Ellen Ripley.  That's the only one I can think of, that femShep is even close to the archetype of.  The rest fall more towards more generic female character stereotypes, such as eyecandy/bimbo/damsel in distress/strong right up until she meets the male lead/etc.

So you're saying the only reason you play FemShep is because such an archetype is rare?

Partially that, yeah.  Also partially because the "shaved head, beefcake, generic, white, male, tough marine" is SO, SO tired.  We've seen it a hundred times, played it a hundred times, read it a hundred times.  It's terribly cliched.

It's not common, or cliche, to see a woman of the calibre of Ripley.  That's why it's a shame they didn't go with that for the possible ME movie.  People love Ripley, she's one of the most popular and enduring characters of the last 30 years of film.

Compare her to say, whats-his-face from Avatar.  Which one is more memorable?

Yes, they can not identify with a strong masculine archetype because they feel threatened by it.  The hate that Vega got before the game launch was also indicative of this.  Vega is another strong, masculine archetype, and a lot of guys on here were hating on him just because of the way he looked..

That says something to me.  And when you consider that a significant percentage of the guys on here are probably of the typical nerd variety, then it begins to make sense, because those kind of guys tend to naturally be at odds with the Western ideals of masculinity.

No preference. I play both and both are good, in their own way. Can you dig it?

I don't know if I can relate to this way of thinking.  I mean, you could go further and say that Shepard would have been less cliched and more "memorable" if he would have been transgendered or something.

Personally, I think the character should fit the story, and the developer should never make politically correct concessions of any sort.

In fact, giving us the option of having Shepard be female would count as a politically correct concession, because women in that line of work are unheard of......especially since Shepard is the first human Specter...

Thats not to say I don't think Bioware should have given it's consumers the ability to select a female Shepard however..

I suspect men play as femshep for the same reason women play as manshep - in other words, for lots of different reasons. Would you play as another race, say an asari? Have you ever played as an elf in a fantasy game? Sometimes it's nice to play what you aren't, sometimes it's nice to play what you identify with, sometimes it's nice to hear different dialogue, sometimes it's nice to look at, sometimes one gets better options than another, sometimes it's about titillation, sometimes it's about a feeling of personal recognition, sometimes it's ..... and so on.

It's something different. I like games, especially ones like this, because I can escape and try on someone else's life for a while. Might as well try one that's completely different.

Plus, I am in love with Jennifer Hale's voice. She's my favorite actress by far. I don't watch many movies, I don't even get any tv stations, and there are only a few shows that I order through Amazon Video on Demand service. I do play a lot of video games, and I did and still do watch a lot of cartoons. Most of my favorite characters have been voiced by her. So I pick her as my favorite over even an A-list movie star.

Wow, what cave did you just crawl out of? There are tons of women serving in the military all over the world. This isn't "political correctness", it's a reflection of the real world. Women aren't sitting around at home baking cookies, painting their nails, and talking about soap operas with their girlfriends while they wait for their man (aka the center of their universe, their raison d'etre) to get home and give their life meaning.

It's the same reason why there are people of all races in the game, and people of all orientation. Ashley is a woman, and she's religious, Vega's hispanic, James is black, Cortez is gay, etc. Putting characters like that in isn't about political correctness. Art should be a reflection of the world, of what it is, where it came from, and what it can be. And like it or not, we live in a world of diversity.

In fact, I'd like to see a video game where the player character was female. Actually female, not just some curves stuck on a male skeleton, and a different voice actress to say the lines. We need more female role models to counteract this kind of thinking. Just take a look at the other females in the game, and it's easy to see that Shepard as a strong female character was an accident, and as soon as Bioware gave any real thought to her, she went from strong marine to teenage supermodel. It was a good first step, but it could have been so much better.

I didn't crawl out of a cave.  In fact, I'm a veteran myself, so I actually know what I'm talking about, unlike you.

I never said, or implied that there weren't any women in the Military.  How silly is that?

What I meant was, there aren't any women that are at the elite Spec Ops level that Shepard is supposed to be.

This is true, but this may not be the case in the future.

While discussing the possibility of women in the Navy SEALS, Admiral Eric T. Olson (A Navy SEAL himself) said, "There are a number of things that a man and a woman can do together that two guys can't. I don't think it's as  important that they can do a lot of push-ups. I think it's much more important what they're made of and whether or not they have the courage and the intellectual agility to do that."

Source

It's an interesting thought. Women typically don't have the physical strength of men, but from Olsen's perspective it wouldn't be about that. It seems like while the criteria for a woman getting into the SEALS might be more lax from a physical strength standpoint, they would be fulfilling somewhat different roles. Regardless, hell week breaks most men, so I'd love to meet the woman that makes it through that.

Women are much more prone to stress fractures than men. That makes them less capable as infantrymen, generally.

So I can see the difference.
This is something that Bioware does quite well. They can make a male character play experience and a female character play experience quite different from each other, and not just through obvious things like romance options. There's all sorts of little and subtle things that sperate male Bioware protagonists and female Bioware protagonists, and I've always felt that it's an injustice to Bioware to not see both sides of the equation.
Being male in real life, I still go 'male first', but immediately after comes a female playthrough.Image IPB

To get a different perpective. And for the funny dialog sometimes. And Jennifer Hale, is a good voice actress. And also, 3rd person rpgs involve staring at your characters ass for hour on hour on end. would you want to stare at a man's ass or women's ass? : D

The same reason I watch films/tv shows and read books with female protagonists. It really isn't that hard to relate to a woman you know.

We don't like 80% of people play male Shepards. Pretty sure around 10% of the player base are female so. That said, my cannon Shepard is male, but since i like this franchise so much i play multiple Shepards, some of them are female.

ME1 was my first game playing as female, because the male animations was so female, that i stopped my first run as male on Eden Prime. But then, i noticed, that playing as female has more charm, because females have a nice ending, that is much better than the ending of ME3 ;-)
