You guys have some good reasons. I apologize for the repeat post apparently, I don't use the forums very often and there wasn't a femshep topic on the first page so I didn't think it was talked about too much. I guess the real reason I find it strange is because ( I know it's sexist and video games aren't real ) but, I don't find a female hero to be realistic. Whenever I think of someone who would be able to save the galaxy it would have to be a man because women are typically weaker and more emotional. So there feminists rage all you want, but that's why I asked.

There's a reason all battle focused jobs in the military aren't allowed for females. I'm with you. Plus, her VA is horrible sounding e_e

It's the same reason I do it in table top gaming.  I like to Role Play. I try to give me Shep and FemShep different voices, in why they do things. It helps to be different if your going to do multipleplays.

Also, Jenfier Hale is way better than Meer. I've liked her voices since the first time I heard her on a cartoon

Same here. I made a female character in DA2 to see if there were any unique dialog options. I've never made a female shepard though.

I notice that a lot of male players seem to play as a female Commander Shepard. My friend told me that he prefers femdhep because Jennifer Hale is a better voice actor than Mark Meer (not sure if that's his name). But from what I've heard I wouldn't say her voice acting is particularly good. Even her role as Naomi in MGS4 I found lacking. I find males like to play a female character in other games too and I've never understood the motivation. If I have a choice I always choose a male character because, being a male, I feel I can relate to the character more or see myself in their role. So why do guys play as female characters?

One reason...would rather look at this, than a dude with a scraggly face.

I play as both male and female shepard. Of course, my true shep will always be the one in my heart, but its nice to see other romance plotlines and how characters and lines are different depending on your gender.

Love it in ME1 when Harkin acts all pervy on femshep. I just renegade his ass out the water!

Id rather stare at a female character that I designed for 40 hours than another dude....I see that when I look in the mirror enough.

Males who play males = See themselves in the game playing the part, therefore choose same gender
Males playing females = See the character in the game as a unique character(as in NOT themselves) and tend to choose the gender they are attracted to most.

Same goes for females, however, females will tend to choose their own gender most even if they don't use the character as a proxy for themselves. They just tend to explore the character that would act in a way different than their own personality.

Yeah, this post really should get sticked. Although its not fully correct. Players who identify themselves with the game character play the closest they can find. Everyone else plays whatever, girls, aliens, criminal, lesbians. ( :D ), its fun.

The first group is actually quite unstable, taking a video game quite a bit too seriously. These are the ones who could kill for virtual swords, or be genuinely hurt by a game/story ending, for example.

Eye candy. Variety. Voice Acting. Voice Acting. Voice Acting.

And there aren't enough strong female leads in American media.

I always find this kind of question a bit odd. I mean I'm choosing to play a special forces soldier from the future and my real world profession is working in a lab. And I'm sure most people's jobs here are equally distant, and yet people ask why you would play a different gender.

If I was concerned with potraying reality I wouldn't be playing the game at all.

You are free to believe whatever you want... But my point is that, I won't share the creation code to anybody else, because like I said, I want to keep my FemShep to myself :)

This plus duh it's roleplaying. I'm also not a an elf in real life, or a super hero that saves the universe.

Oh and diversity. Too many generic male characters. Too few strong female characters.

Easier to make look attractive. With males it usually turns into "I try to make myself or someone I know (of) so I can roleplay as Harrison Ford, Marcus Fenix and stuff" while with females I can think of way more appealing original looks as well as the known ones.

What, Jennifer Hale isn't reason enough for you?

Ok, ok fine I will humour you. I play most (single-player) games as a chick even though I am a guy. Why? Well the overused reason is so I don't have to stare at a mans butt for 30 hours. That is true btw. But in general being a man I want to hear a woman speak, see a womans face on close ups ect.

My question to you is...being a man or woman..why the hell would you want to play your own sex? Role playing is about being something you are not. Given a choice I will always choose playing as an alien over playing a human. Why? Because I AM a human. Every day.

I like the chance to be something I am not. It is not related to sex in its physical form or in terms of sexuality. Sometimes my female characters are lesbians, but sometimes they are not. It depends on the character I give them. Same with my male characters. I like to see all possible romances on both sides. But I will play female first..usually. I'm actually playing a guy in Skyrim just because I wanted to make him look like how I visualise Druss The Legend. (google it - David Gemmell books)

Guys play as femshep because they make femshep into their ideal woman. Guy chooses the appearance, personality, and she would how she behaves in situations. It's kind of like girls who play with Ken dolls, they make Ken into what they like.

Acknowledging that there is a huge difference in the number of male protagonists to female protagonists is not sexist at all, it's just true.  And it sucks.  I love strong women, and if they're done right, a lot of people love them too (see: Ellen Ripley).  It's nice that BioWare and Jennifer Hale managed to give us a strong woman hero that is not overly sexualized, and actually seems like she can shoulder the huge weight she's carrying.

Edit: hmm, I totally misread what you said.

In that case, yeah, even to me sometimes it does seem kind of weird to have a female hero saving the galaxy, but I like that it is possible.  Maybe in a few years, people will come to see that as not weird, and hopefully Mass Effect will have some influence in that cultural change.  I mean, it is historically true that most military commanders have been male, but as humanity grows and changes, we have started accepting that it is possible for women to take the roles previously held exclusively by men.

unless someone has the code to make Jeremy Wade (River Monsters)  Bear Grylls (Man vs Wild) Or Tom Brady I am quite happy with only 1 male shep and played much less than my femsheps :D

I have a few friends that dedicate their characters to the opposite gender. The reasoning they give is "well, if im gonna be staring at a characters **** for a whole game, it better be a womans..

^ Thus the thread can now be closed we have our answer :D .  Male here and pretty much exclusively do femshep playthroughs.  At no point do I ever project myself into the game, I am not Commander Shepard nor will I ever be Commander Shepard.  I get sick of always seeing the Dudebro hero so it makes a nice change to see a character with feminine charms doing the work hence I stick with femshep.  On top of the other reasons such as Hale's voice etc etc.

Because most guys tell me they don't like watching a guys butt for 40-100 hours of game play.
