I think all that "if you're gonna stare at your character's ass it may as well be the ass of your preferable gender" is all bs, some kind of a secret internet 'reply' that everyone uses for this question now. Honestly, I think most people pay much more attention to what Shep's looking at than what Shep looks like from behind. :D

It's not bogus. At least not in my case. You see more of Shep than anyone else. Why not make her a beautiful woman so she's more fun to look at? I have a very difficult time understanding why so many guys think other dudes are lying when they say this. That's not the only reason I have several femsheps but it's a big part of it.

Imposing your own actions on others, I see. Different people, different attitudes.
Just because the argument doesnt apply to you doesnt make it invalid for others.

Honestly what's the big deal? Role-playing, having fun, testing something new? Does that really matter. Don't we all play games to have fun or to get away from a world that demand crazy amount of work from us?

'Cause Jennifer Hale is awesome, and I've been a fan of her work ever since the 90's when I heard her voice-acting during various Black Isles games (plus her performance as Felicia Hardy/Black Cat in Spider-Man, rawr). Hale's voice aside, it's also because I enjoy creating a female character that doesn't fall into the generic stereotype of 'frail, weak female figure'.  I prefer the idea of making a strong, confident female character of some sort.

I did so in other games too, like in Fallout: New Vegas where I not only created my character with the intent of being somewhat of a Wasteland survivor type, but unlike most of the Bethesda userbase, I focused on not making her look like a sl*t, but actually like someone who tries to survive in the desert. The results are as such. A friend of mine even pointed out that at first glance, you can't even tell it's a girl. Which was the point; what sane woman in a post-apocalyptic world full of raiders and other scumbags would prance around in a bikini. She'd be trying to hide her gender. Anyone who's read 'A Boy and His Dog' or seen the Mad Max movies knows what I'm talkin' about.

It's the "I wish to maintain my masculinity" reply.

Though, it could be partially true.  I do like to stare at my FemShep's ass but that's not the only reason I play as FemShep.  There are many many other reasons.

However, I don't think it's necessary to defend your masculinity against stupid people who think men shouldn't play as female characters...they are the ones with the issue.

My initial intention was to determine the nature of my natural enemy: woman. Science has proven, one assumes, that men and women are obligated to be at odds with each other at all times, and playing Mass Effect as the female incarnation of the lead character seemed like an excellent opportunity to learn more about my foe.

Femshep taught me that women are likely to push me through windows and shoot me in the face.

I have since decided that diplomacy is the best option.

Being oneself can be pretty awesome though, if you are doing it right.

If you think what you are doing isn't weird, then it isn't weird.
If you think someone else is doing something weird, then mind your own business.

I notice that a lot of male players seem to play as a female Commander Shepard. My friend told me that he prefers femdhep because Jennifer Hale is a better voice actor than Mark Meer (not sure if that's his name). But from what I've heard I wouldn't say her voice acting is particularly good. Even her role as Naomi in MGS4 I found lacking. I find males like to play a female character in other games too and I've never understood the motivation. If I have a choice I always choose a male character because, being a male, I feel I can relate to the character more or see myself in their role. So why do guys play as female characters?

I played ME1 thru as broshep the first time.  When I decided to do a renegade run, I decided to check out FemShep on a lark. I was blown away.

Not by the superiority of the voice acting (I think it is marginally superior than Meer's), but because of how the story treated the protagonist - no differently.  That may sound silly or obvious, but I couldn't remember another game or story or movie I've watched where the gender of the hero literally didn't matter to the rest of the cast, or story. FemShep doesn't succeed because she's a woman, or because she's sexy - she succeeds because she's awesome. Just like broshep.  I found it very refreshing to watch/participate in a story where the female lead's gender just didn't matter to the larger story, and she wasn't defined by her sexuality.

I dig stories w/ strong female chars.  Now all I play is FemShep.

Eh, you have Dragon Age Origins registered. So you -should- have experienced another such game. My Female Warden won by kicking ass and killing dudes, not by seducing them (although seducing Loghain and assassinating him during intercourse would have been a damned awesome option:devil:).

They like Shepards new and improved ass ;D  But really Bioware really did improve Shepard's ass in Mass Effect 3.

Hell yeah, that's true, she has a BIG one :D Sized as her hip :o

I play femshep often because of voice and view. You can choose beautiful eyes for femsheps in ME series, i think. I love to see that eyes in scenes. ;-)
And, of course, very funny to fight in light pink armor set. :D

By that I'm guessing you didn't like games like Super Mario or Grand Theft Auto,

or better yet in Super Mario Bros 2, you played as Princess Toadstool because it saved you from having to staire at plumber ass stomping gombas?  :D

Why do men watch movies with female protagonists?  I've never heard anyone ask me why as a guy I watch Aliens or Terminator when the protagonist is female.

The real question is why does it bother you that men do play females characters.

I can't stand Mark Meer's voice as Shepard, simple as that.

I'm more used to Jennifer Hale anyhow.

Lots of good reasons have been listed in this thread.

I did my first play-through as male, and now I'm going through as female. Regardless of what kind of character you play, you're engaging in a kind of fantasy - why not include gender as one of the (many) ways your game persona differs from you in real life?

If you had the option to play as an alien species, wouldn't many of us play non-humans? Wouldn't (or shouldn't) that be an even bigger departure than being a different sex?

I think he's trying to say that the reason you guys play as women in video games is because you're not happy with your gender, and try to escape your body by playing as an attractive woman. Either that or I think he's trying to say that you guys play as females for masturbation purposes, I can't decide which though, could be both.

I'm just saying what I think he's implying, I'm not shy and I don't beat around the bush. :innocent:
