I notice that a lot of male players seem to play as a female Commander Shepard. My friend told me that he prefers femdhep because Jennifer Hale is a better voice actor than Mark Meer (not sure if that's his name). But from what I've heard I wouldn't say her voice acting is particularly good. Even her role as Naomi in MGS4 I found lacking. I find males like to play a female character in other games too and I've never understood the motivation. If I have a choice I always choose a male character because, being a male, I feel I can relate to the character more or see myself in their role. So why do guys play as female characters?

Why do men watch movies with female protagonists?  I've never heard anyone ask me why as a guy I watch Aliens or Terminator when the protagonist is female.

The real question is why does it bother you that men do play females characters.

The protagonist in T2 is John, Sarah, and the T-800

I think he's trying to say that the reason you guys play as women in video games is because you're not happy with your gender, and try to escape your body by playing as an attractive woman. Either that or I think he's trying to say that you guys play as females for masturbation purposes, I can't decide which though, could be both.

I'm just saying what I think he's implying, I'm not shy and I don't beat around the bush. :innocent:

I think you guys do like to be women, playing as women.

If this was the 8-bit days of gaming, would the majority of you gamers be playing Princess Toadstool over the 3 playable male characters Mario, Luigi, and Toad in Super Mario Bros 2?

The better question is, who cares? Most male characters in games are too ridiculously bulky stereotypes (see Warcraft, Skyrim, etc) for me as well. Plus, I can never seem to get the character to look like me and without my voice, it doesn't seem right, as I'm making the choices.

I couldn't give two ****s, just thought I'd throw in my two pennies for the sake of boredom.
p.s. Skyrim is a bad example, it has a weight slider.

I didn't understand the bold bit of your post.
But you've just reminded me of Super Mario 64, cheers man those were good times.

FemShep looks better. No, that's not a "Stare at a woman's ass instead of a guy's" sort of thing, since you're not exactly looking at the character's ass much in this game. FemShep just... I dunno, feels right?

I've considered making a Male Shep that looks like Joe Flannigan though. That'd be kind of awesome.

Not playing as a FemShep is like never playing Renegade. You've already paid for this content, and you're not going to ever even take a look at it? That's just dumb; you might as well take a look at it even if it's not your favorite kind of character.

I played ME1 thru as broshep the first time.  When I decided to do a renegade run, I decided to check out FemShep on a lark. I was blown away.

Not by the superiority of the voice acting (I think it is marginally superior than Meer's), but because of how the story treated the protagonist - no differently.  That may sound silly or obvious, but I couldn't remember another game or story or movie I've watched where the gender of the hero literally didn't matter to the rest of the cast, or story. FemShep doesn't succeed because she's a woman, or because she's sexy - she succeeds because she's awesome. Just like broshep.  I found it very refreshing to watch/participate in a story where the female lead's gender just didn't matter to the larger story, and she wasn't defined by her sexuality.

I dig stories w/ strong female chars.  Now all I play is FemShep.

Pretty much this. Although I was somewhat annoyed by ME3's new tack - there was more pointing out Femshep's gender than in the previous 2 games combined (In ME 1&2, the only instance I can think of is the Batarian merc recruiter on Omega). It's pretty much why I despise the Vega character. They *really* needed an option for Femshep to shut him down hard (like threaten charges of insubordination or something). Although I personally would've tossed him out an airlock when he questioned orders after leaving Earth, but I guess that's a different discussion.

Anyway, I think it's funny that the people who imply that we're weird to choose Femshep are the ones who are most repulsed by the idea of choosing a female protagonist over a male. I imagine that Freud would have a few things to say about how comfortable they are with their own sexuality.

Why do you play as a soldier or a space wizard? You're not either of those things in real life! (Well, some people are soldiers, obviously, but you know what I'm saying.)

Why did I do a runthrough of ME3 as a gay MaleShep? I'm not gay!

Maybe most people can tell a game from reality and don't think the character they're playing is "them". You play an RPG to create a story. Maybe the story I want is a kick-butt Renegade female. Maybe next time the story I want is a goody-two-shoes guy. If you can't understand this, you are literally retarded.

I agree 100%, I don't see why some of these guys feel so threatened by the very thought of someone playing as a female protagonist. Actually I think I might have a theory, I think that these kind of men aren't happy with there masculinity in the real world. But rather than go work out at the gym or try to get laid, they feel the best course of action is to attack people on the internet (Safety) who they assume to be more insecure than them.

Now I only play as a male Shepard, but that's in no way because I'm insecure about my masculinity and want to be a big tough guy. It simply works for me, same as a female Shepard works for you.

Seconded.

I also thought Vega was a Machismo twerp.

By hitting both Renegade and Paragon prompts during our first "chat", he got bloodied and I was untouched.

"Care to talk again, Lola?"
"Anytime, Vega [you want me to dominate you like a helpless puppy], anytime."

There are a lot of macho stereo type protaganists and very few strong female characters that don't rely on a male counter part to save the day somehow, so playing a game where you can be that badd ass chick is cool and refreshing, my cannon Shep is still a man.

Whatever floats people's boats.
Personally I feel weird playing as a female character in any RPG where you customise yourself (e.g. Mass Effect, Skyrim). Not because I feel that insecure, not because I think it's pervy or anything, just because in RPGs like this I want to play like it's me (and that's difficult when your a female). In RPG/MMOs where the main character is set as a female (e.g. FF13, Tomb Raider), or a specific class is female-only, I'm more than happy to play a female character.

I primarily play as female characters in most games, but I play male when I play mass effect. I feel I can relate more if we're the same gender. Otherwise, its female all the way.

Plus, I'm already a guy. I don't want to continue being one in a space opera or an open world RPG (Skyrim.) I guess its just.... better?

I get frightened by Jennifer Hale's voice, tis why I never got into the femShep. :crying:

But overall, I can only play "seriously" as a dude character for some reason. I'm not sure why, perhaps I'm just uncomfortable with it.

And for those who pull the "I do it for the womanly assets" card, a question - really? Pixels? :?
