I choose maleshep in ME1 & ME2 instinctively, didn't even cross my mind to play as femshep but after I played ME2 I started to notice a small amount of players saying that they loved playing as femshep. Fast forward half a year and I decided to replay ME2 and thought I'll see what this femshep is all about. After a few hours I quit and never returned to that save file. I didn't hate femshep by any means but I found Hale's voice frankly just not as good as Meer's so much to the point that it actually made the character less enjoyable to play as. I've liked Hale in other games but just not these games very much.

I get the whole I get to stare at a fembutt the whole game and whatnot but I don't really understand not just the love but the slight defensiveness that femshep fans can get riled up on sometimes but I respect people's opinion when they like femshep voice more than malesheps.

Whilst I still prefer Female Shepard, I am beginning to appreciate Male Shepard. Mark Meer does a pretty good job as Male Shepard especially in Mass Effect 3.

1.Because females are more attractive then males.

2.Because I like the voice actor.

3.Because it's a role playing game and I want to role play as a woman.(I have to be the one person who post so far who plays femshep straight the majority of the time.)

"Hey, wanna dance? Watch this!"

^ The only reason you need to play Maleshep.

Because limiting yourself to only one gender means you only see half as much of the game. If doing multiple playthroughs, why not try Femshep? See new stuff, hear new dialogue. Its not rocket science.

I will always pick the badass chick in games where you simply control the character.

However, in games like ME...where you can create your own character...I will always play male...because I create the character as myself within the game.

Who is "MaleShep"? In all my playthroughs, the (Lieutenant) Commander is a woman.

Jokes aside, like many guys here, I started playing ME1 with a barely customized BroShep when suddenly, I lost ALL interest. Didn't bother to play the game again and ALMOST sold it. However, a friend of mine told me that the female option was "interesting to play as".

So, I went ahead and created a female Shepard. At first, yes, it was weird as hell but then Jennifer Hale's voice (among many other things in ME1) made me appreciate and love the game. And to this date, all my ME1, ME2 and M3 playthroughs have been with different Femsheps (different backgrounds, decisions, etc, etc).

I'm a 31 year old guy and it doesn't bother me to say that I only play as Femshep. Although I have to say it did feel weird (again) to romance a guy in ME2 in order to get the Paramour Achievement (I was so sure Samara was a romance option back then.......oh well).

I am a guy who plays FemShep.

Why? Because this was the first game I played that let me chose my character's sex and I thought "aside from FFX-2 I've never played a female, I'm going to try it." I liked the FemShep character far, far, far better than the male counterpart. I played through ME1 as a male once and that was it. FemShep all the way for this guy.

Plus, its not like they make it so you can't identify with Shep if you're the opposite sex. All it does in game is change some lines and diferent romances. And yes, I romanced a guy because I like Garrus and really liked his romance.

I always play as a male Shepard. I make him look like me, make the choices that I would make, and romance who I like the most (Miranda in ME2, and it would have been Ashley in ME3 but I missed the dialogue it seems, and it never happened ).

But there's a lot to be said about playing as a female Shepard. I also never choose Renegade options, save for a few obvious ones. I find it difficult to do that when Shepard is essentially me. I was going to start my Insanity playthrough tonight, and make another me clone, but I know I would end up making the same choices as before. So maybe my Insanity Inferno armour wearing Renegade Sentinel Shepard should be female?

Decisions, decisions.

I've done that on so many playthroughs. Keep making the same decisions over and over because I like them.

I'm the same way.

My repeat playthroughs are just like watching the same tv series over and over just because I like it so much.

Honestly, the reason I initially picked FemShep is that I thought Sheploo looked like a fairly typical "macho" space marine, and I didn't have much luck designing a MaleShep face that I liked. I generally find the "badass male action hero" to be tiresome and cliched, so making the character female was just an easy way to avoid that.

I've since played several Shepards in both genders, but I still slightly prefer Hale's performance to Meer's and consider one of my FemSheps to be my canon Shepard.

Jennifer Hale.

I generally play both genders in all games except Mass Effect series because of her.

This is like the 1 millionth time this topic has come up, and I'll give the same answer for the 1 millionth time:
If I'm gonna be staring at someone's backside for the next 20+ hours, I rather it be a female's. Besides, 90% of the games out there have you play as a male protagonist, and that gets stale after a while.

And then there are the romances:
In DA2 I had Marian Hawke x Isabela
In ME1-3 I had femShep x Liara (and Kelly, Traynor, (and if that kiss from Aria counts) Aria.

Besides, I see playing as femShep(and Marian Hawke) the same as playing as Samus Aran, Lara Croft, Jill Valentine, Bayonetta, Lightning, Chun-Li, etc. It's character in a game. That's it. It all just comes down to preference.

And the female form is just better to look at.
It's like what Elaine said on that Seinfeld episode "The Apology": "The female body is a work of art.  The male body is utilitarian. It's for gettin' around. It's like a Jeep."

I have never played a male character in any game in which i could relate too simply because they are experiencing something I would never experience, or hope to experience, like war, crime, weird action adventure. This is only one thing, but because of it its easier for me not to project myself unto said male characters and just play as them for whatever duration and get it over with, if its a enjoyable experience then it's because im looking at the adventure from a distant perspective not a reflective one. However if the option of being a female character is playable i'll pick that one for the same reasons as the male but with her usually being easier on the eyes and its even more far fetched.

For a whole host of reasons, Its an aesthetic choice with female Shepard and Hawke. I would rather look at the female protagonists bum for 20+ hours instead of the overly buff male protagonist.
I get into the female VAs better than the male ones. But in Mark Meers defence that youtube video of him saying "we'll bang okay" helped me finally get into playing as Male shepard.
Its an rpg above all else so playing as the male protagonist doesn't give me a different experience of the world so i will always choose the female option where its offered.
