I played fem Hawke, fem Exile and females in the Fallout games. I might play a female in Project Eternity too.

Why?

Because I like change sometimes.

I play as both but more often play as FemShep. I like the delivery of Hale a bit more, like the relationships a bit more, and she just seems less cold to me than BroShep.

I also have 1 of each gender in SWTOR, a healthy mix in DDO, 1 of each for Hawke in DAII, a variety in DA:O, played as both in KOTOR and KOTORII, and so on. It brings variety and when given the chance I do play them very differently.

It's nice to be able to actually role-play as a character totally unlike you, and I admit femshep has totally grown on me to the point my broshep runs are left sitting for me to play them again. I've still yet to play broshep in ME3.

I still don't understand why this is an issue for people when it's not their Shepard or why this question crops up in every game I play. Hell my wife was given grief in DDO for playing a male character based off Sabretooth by a guy playing a female character. Figure that one out.

I try to play as both genders to mix it up a bit and because sometimes the dialogue can be different and I hate missing stuff like that.

I've had 3 male Shepards and I have 1 female Shepard.

If I have a choice I always choose a male character because, being a male, I feel I can relate to the character more or see myself in their role. So why do guys play as female characters?

Well, whenever I create a character in an RPG or RPG-ish game, I come up with a really basic, 1-2 sentence concept that gives me direction for what actions to take as I play through the game. I find that some concepts fit male characters better, and others fit female characters better, and so I make both male and female characters whom I can relate to equally well.

Because Mark Meer is the blandest dullest phoning it inest VA I have ever heard. Zero emotion zero passion nothing that makes me want to care about his character in any way.

I've never really understood why this is such an issue for some people. I'm male and I play as both male and female characters, both in Mass Effect and pretty much every other game that gives you the option. Why is this such a big deal to some people?

( I had a whole rant all planned out about why this topic keeps popping up, but then I realized that this is an old thread so I shortened it considerably :P )

Interesting enough I only played Male Shep ever since I played ME and that continued until today, never played with FemShep until recently after I finished the trilogy on my PS3 I decided to give her a go so far I like, oddly enough its so much easier to make a good looking Shep with females than with Male version.

Maybe it's because as a guy who i assume is heteorsexual, you KNOW what looks good to you, so making a good looking female is easier, than a GUY since subconsciously might be admitting to something that you're not comfortable with. lol

Same reason I (female, btw) always play as Sheploo. If I'm gonna stare at the same character for 30 hours or so, I want some eye candy. Plus it's easier to role play if your character is distinctly different from you.

Is it really that hard to imagine someone roleplaying as a person completely different from them? God. :?

I'll give a alternate answer why do we women like to play as men because we are looked down upon and aren't given nearly the same respect as men within the gaming community.

This could be true as I've killed Kaiden every chance i've gotten, i never romanced him as femshep and never even considered romancing him as sheploo. (where does sheploo come from anyway?)

I play both.

Didn't realise it was even a thing people cared about until recently.

That's because they shouldn't care.  I play both as well.  Playing as femshep gives the series a different flavor.

Just started ME3 with my first Shepard (male). I think I'm gonna do all the romantic permutations with male Shepards and do a renegade 'Dante' run before starting a FemShep.

Ok, and staring at a fake female's ass while playing is not motivation enough to play as FemShep. There are a lot more spectacular fake asses and ****** in porn.

The voice actor for femshep does a better job. Besides, female kick-ass space marine. What more could one ask for? :D

I like beautiful and deadly things. Like russian fighter jets :P

From the name of the model they used as inspiration for him, i believe? Or was it his voice actor?

Because Hale does IMO better job then Meer when it comes to voice acting.
However the main reason why i prefer playing fem. Shepard or just female in any game is because i just feel alot more badass when i see woman kicking someone's ass + too many games and movies are puting males in front.

There are barely any good main female protagonists nowadays they either just over sexualize them or the overall movie sucks (like Hunger Games and Resident Evil). We need more: Ripley, Beatrix and Sarah Connor type of protagonists.
