Why do men like to play as a female Shepard?

I play both but generally prefer Mshep because I can identify with him more.

I notice that a lot of male players seem to play as a female Commander Shepard. My friend told me that he prefers femdhep because Jennifer Hale is a better voice actor than Mark Meer (not sure if that's his name). But from what I've heard I wouldn't say her voice acting is particularly good. Even her role as Naomi in MGS4 I found lacking. I find males like to play a female character in other games too and I've never understood the motivation. If I have a choice I always choose a male character because, being a male, I feel I can relate to the character more or see myself in their role. So why do guys play as female characters?
Not everyone imagines themselves as the main character in their entertainment, be it video games, movies, books, etc. If you watch Saving Private Ryan, do you need to picture yourself as Tom Hanks in order to like the movie? Or can you just appreciate the film on it's own?
Some people play because they just like to be entertained, and if you are doing multiple playthroughs why wouldn't you make different choices each time? Like choosing a different gender to see what, if anything, is different the next time around.

I think it comes down to personal play style. Some people self-insert. Some want a character they relate to. Some people like to have a character that is far removed from them.
I enjoying playing femshep for that latter reason. It's a similar reason to why I think its fun to play Renegade. It's stepping outside the box. I've played enough lantern-jawed space marines to last me a life time.
This every other game lets you play the typical male hero. It's nice to just have the option to step outside the box with games like this.

Plus I like the male Shepard's voice acting better.

1. femshep is convincing enough that she sounds like she could be a real person, while manshep sounds like a generic action game dudebro space marine thing.
2. manshep can't romance garrus.

i'm a dude, and i don't feel any more like i'm roleplaying when i play femshep than i do when i play manshep--my femshep is, as far as i'm concerned, my avatar in the mass effect universe--and i don't play femshep because i think she's super sexy or anything, because i'm not into women in the first place.

I agree. There's just something that makes femshep more nteresting as a character in someway, I think Jennifer Hale's fantastic work helps a lot in that. Of my main three Shepards, 2 are female.

- A female's backside is easier on the eyes than a male's.
- Mark Meer is an excellent VA, but his VA work on ME1 was lackluster compared to Jennifer Hale's. Mark has come a long way and grown as a VA though and his VA work is fantastic now. The point? I picked Femshep in ME1 and had no reason to switch that up.
- Jennifer Hale delivers lines with a solid amount of feminine aggression.

That and I think they secretly love playing with all the hairstyles.

Here are the top ten.
10. None of your dumb business. Eerr typical response when they think you calling them gay.
9. Questioning sexuality. Even thought it a small percent are it is the most thought of reason.
8. Bored.
7. The differences in Apparel look. Armors and outfits some time change so it cool to see new look.
6. The like female bodies (IE Female Character Fetish.) Most these players want boob sliders too.
5. Be cause on multiple play thru they want to change thing up.
4. The Dialogue is different because some races and character react different to M/F characters.
3. Lesbian Sex scenes. Sorry guys had to state this one.
2. If you run around as a Shepard for 20 plus hours. Who's ass do you want to stare at?
1. Females saving the Male dominated galaxy just seems right. It slap society for thinking they are weak.

Men like to play as the female version of Shepard because it is the only way to romance Garrus.
I was so worried that in ME3 Garrus tries to hit on MaleShep. "Hey, am I making myself clear that I love you as buddybuddy but please don't do the Kaidans"

I play male Shepard (using the default face) 90% of the time. He is THE Shepard for me.
But when I wanna spice it up a bit, I load up a custom femShep and play around. I do notice subtle differences in some conversations, check out Renegade/Paragon option I've never taken before etc.
I like Mark Meer's voice acting much, much better than Jeniffer Hale's, but it is still fun to play femShep from time to time.
This.
Also, why not?

If im gunna play a character for hours, I'd rather stare at ****** and ass than a guy's ass.
Why would you stare at his/her ass? You are missing a lot if you do that
Well, in casual clothes, the animation is horrible of you walking. I wonder if BW is ever going to get animations to look more real. And you are constantly looking at Shep's back side. Might as well be a more shapely one.
They should ask CD PROJECT RED on how to do motion capture animation, they are superior to BW's.
Ah.. The Witcher 3. I cannot wait. It is likely the game that will get me over this god-awful ending.. You just made me more happy then you could imagine.

It is okay to play as a female character if you are male, you don't have to man it up by implying it gives you sexual pleasure. That is all.

1. Given the Market Saturation of "Tuff space marine doods", a strong, female in that role kind of spins the whole thing around, creating what I feel is a more compelling character, simply because you just don't see it.
2. Sheer curiosity. Secure in my masculinity that is reaffirmed by the aforementioned pleathora of leading male roles, my first foray into "Femshep" Territory was simply a "What if" question. The option was there, and I tried it.
3. Better character Range. Mark Meer isn't a bad Voice Actor, but Jennifer Hale has better range. While Meer can deliver the renegade (Mostly the sarcastic ones) with a hilariously fitting tone, Hale can fill virtually any emotional state, making certain scenes much more sincere.
Now for the Low-brow.
1. Female Body. Not just ****** and Ass, but the entire form itself is pleasing to look at. As James Vega said, Commander Shepard "Fills out an alliance uniform like nobody's business."
2. Liara T'soni. This may seem a little hypocritical after my No.1 from "Highbrow" list, since the whole "Lesbian" thing is totally overplayed now, but seriously, Innocent Nerd turned ruthless black market information queen? What's not to love?
3. Garrus Vakarian. Would fit in No.2 if it weren't so damn weird. Garrus is my favorite character, and the small, entrenched nodule of emotion that I have is stirred by the character and what trials he's been subjected to, but the rest of my male brain can't help but ask a question that can't get answered outside of some of the most terrifying DeviantArt pages on the planet... How exactly does it happen??

IMHO Hale is the better VA. I have tried to like Meer's voice but after my 3rd male Shepard playthrough in Mass Effect 2, I couldn't stand his voice or acting. Mark Meer is great for trailers but I can't stand his voice for 40+ hours of gaming and I couldn't relate to him as a character and I didn't really cared about male Shepard.
Also I when I play a RPG I like to be get far away from myself as much as I can. Why should I roleplay as a man? I already am a man I want to escape from my world and myself. I perfer playing as strong women in RPG games I can play as a male hero in thousands of games. I also get tied very quickly of looking at a guy's backside for about 40+ hours it takes me to beat the game.

Why not?
Also i tend to be a bit of a completionist who has to see everything. So i do a run through of both sexes. Not only that but i have a ME2 char for every romance option there. So 3 female sheps and 3 male sheps.
ME3 i did a male playthrough then randomly drew up my Garrus Paragon femshep. Had to say I found the whole romance arc rather amusing and i fdid find myself grinning a couple times at my best Turian bud. Sadly im not going to import the rest of my femsheps though...Jacob and Thane romances got shafted... Although i may have the Jacob + Kaiden femshep dump them all and go for Traynor
