Its an RPG (of sorts), the option is there to play as either Male or Female. So I do. Ive got like 7/8 saves on with near equal sexes. Its no bother what Sheperd is, but its nice to see what, if any, changes there is to a male/female character.

And Id add, whilst I think Mark Meer is a good voice actor, his female counterpart Jennifer Hale is just amazing, especially in ME2. She takes the role by the scruff of the neck and makes it her own.

Because I always play games every way you can possibly play them. Hence the 29 times I beat ME2.

1. You can actually create a good looking face
2. Better voice actor
3. Gay scenes are more likely to turn me on than disgust me (not homophobia, I just find men disgusting)

Ok...picture a dude in skivs instead of a female...

Image IPB

Just doesn't work. A females form to me is a work of art...male, not so much; of course I'm biased being I'm male.

Well, as regards Mass effect in general it seems most consider Hale's voiceacting generally better and having more emotion. Its all about personal taste.

I am among those liking Hale's voiceacting better but i in no way consider Meer's bad, far from it.

^ This and for the fact that I like lesbians....What can I say I'm a guy.

I like how this question has been repeated over and over throughout gaming history since they started having female leads in games. It's asked about RPGs, MMOs, everything. Can people finally let this question die? The constant questioning and demands to "justify" why I play both male and female characters is getting rather old.

Why do women like to play as Male Shepard?

I do it to roleplay as well as have access to content MaleShep doesn't. I can't romance Garrus as a male, so I play female. I also really like Hale's voice acting better than Meer's. He just sounds so completely unemotional at all times.

I tend to play both genders when they're available, it just changes things up a bit. Not so much based on the gender itself but the actor. It's also helpful with games that have a morality meter. After completing a Paragon game, playing Renegade with the same character can feel a bit jarring, some of the stuff you'll say won't sound right coming from the same person you spent 30 hours shaping. Male Shepard will always be Paragon and FemShep always Renegade to me, I can't see them any other way.

Don't forget...most virgin nerds feel sexier by wearing edible panties while they play...oh noes, the secret is out!

Female leads are less common than male leads.

I prefer staring at women than men. That's pretty much 60% of the reason why I choose female Shepard.

I've always wanted to play a video game as an awesome kick ass female that is not sexed up like crazy. Yeah, I'm kind of a feminist.

Plus I have been a long time Jennifer Hale fan.

Men like to play as the female version of Shepard because it is the only way to romance Garrus.

This is the reason it'll be tough for me to ever get through a playthrough of the trilogy as a male Shepard (although I'm trying).

The loyalty is fierce and a little weird. There's room in my heart for both, but I've seen a lot of hate for male Shepard and stubborn refusal to acknowledge him from some male gamers. I don't quite understand it.
I don't have any strong prefernece, both Hale and Meer are superb performers. I play a male Shepard primarily, but I'm enjoying the new default female version as well.

I have always played as male shepard, i could never finish any of the 3 games as female. Because I can never imagine romancing males as a female. But i do agree female shepard has much better voice acting. Dialogues make whole lotta sense when you hear them coming from Fem Shep.

I play both, I prefer femshep for alot of reasons, eyecandy, better VA (though I will admit Meer has gotten much better as the games progressed, his VA in ME 3 is far better than it was in ME 1) but personally I feel that Femshep adds something to the story that makes it a more intriguing and powerful story than Male Shepard. Male Shepard is very much a cliche heroic gaming protagonist. Strong female protagonists are rare and make the story more interesting in my opinion.
