A lady being a main character is less common than a dude being one, so there's that. Also, I can't really make a video game version of me because I'm a fatty :'(

Because if I'm going to stare at the ass end of something for 20+ hours it might as well be a woman.

I love Jennifer Hale as an actress, I enjoy watching a female character on screen (it's a change of pace from almost every game out there which forces me to play a bald, male, jerk), and I will admit that the eye candy is nice.

Her plainclothes animations are terrible, though. I really don't understand how they can make Miranda and Liara look so good, but when Shepard runs around, she looks like she has a full diaper or something. :P

I play both, mostly because I'm a completionist and I like to explore every aspect of a game. That said, I do have a certain female character who started life as a paladin in Baldur's Gate but who has been reincarnated as a Warden, Hawke, and Shepard (my avatar is the Hawke incarnation). I don't know why I enjoy playing as this particular character or if it has anything to do with her sex, but if I really want to immerse myself in the story, she's the natural choice as a protagonist.

Ive spent most of my playthroughs as femshep due to Jennifer hales voiceacting.

I just find it making THAT of a difference, since i know i will be spending the next 30-40 hours as this Shepard, i want to like it. Simply.

I simply started that way slowly. Started me1 as male shep, and then played a femshep to see the difference. I was just in love with her style of voicing the character, I liked her emotional inflections in the dialog. It just seemed more, well, alive. I like that in my RPGs, I play to escape into another world for a while, and playing a different gender helps me with that.

Hmm, I think this is the thread that will finally settle the issue, being the 9000th on the subject.

Wait, no.

Nevermind. Carry on.

I played 1 playthrough with a male shep when ME1 came out in '07 but every consequent playthrough afterwards and the shep I brought thru the entire trilogy was a female shep.
For me personally I did it because it was different and unexpected.  You expect a male to choose a male character but I wanted to go the other way.  I also love action and sci-fi movies with female protagonists like the Alien franchise.  I love the fact that Sigourney Weaver was the hero of the series and  Linda Hamilton kicked you know what in the Terminator movies.
I might go back years from now and start a playthrough with a male shep but as far as I'm concerned my Mariam Shepard is the hero of my Mass Effect story.

Whenever you ask this question, 90% of guys that play as female will reflexively blurt out, 'Because I'd rather be staring at a chick's ass all the time, dude! CHICKS ARE HOT! I AM INCREDIBLY HETEROSEXUAL!'. I find it hilarious that it's so common after all these years.

it only took 4 posts before the 'lady butt > dude butt' argument came into play. it's like godwin's law, but for lady butt.

I like how this question has been repeated over and over throughout gaming history since they started having female leads in games. It's asked about RPGs, MMOs, everything. Can people finally let this question die? The constant questioning and demands to "justify" why I play both male and female characters is getting rather old.

I didn't demand you do anything. If you see a thread and think it's a waste of time yet still comment, you're an idiot.
On a different note, I'm suprised by all the different reasons. When I play an RPG I make a character that I would want to be, I make a male Shepard because I want to be a tough guy that saves the galaxy and has a hot girlfriend. I figured that was the point of Role-playing games to play the role you want to have. I'm suprised by all of the different explanations people gave and you make good points.

I have many reasons....

-I liked Jennifer Hale's VO work better than Mark Meer's. I think she puts much more emotion into it.

-I found the narrative for Femshep to be better. ME1 had a couple of extra bits of dialogue for Femshep that made the early part of the game go better.

-I play Sentinel, and in my own little narrative in my head, I like to think that Shepard was kind of a trailblazer for women at the N7 level. As in, since she had biotic and tech skills, she was just too talented to ignore.

- Killing Kaiden on Virmire seems to have more sting to it.

- Renegade femshep is awesome!

I might want to just because of Traynor, that girl could go from here to there with me as long as she keeps up that accent.

I personally find Hale to be an excellent voice actress first and foremost. Secondly, have you ever spent any time in the CC for any of the games? Making a male Shep that doesn't look hideous is a very difficult task. Every time I've made a male Shep, he has to "grow on me" over time, because at first, I can't stand how he looks. Further, I've been gaming since Space Invaders was a hot arcade game. Do you know how many times I've played the generic, tough male marine, saving the day/galaxy/universe? It's such a generic, cliched character.

It's a nice change to see a strong, chop-busting female character in that archetype, who can save the galaxy, use a firearm, pursue her own romantic interests, doesn't need to be rescued, and can do it all without baring her T&A all over the place.

That's why my main and favorite Shep is a femShep.

Good enough answer?

There is no need for such rudeness.  Did I make any personal attack saying you were an idiot? No, I did not.  My comment may not have had a positive tone, but I was civil.  You could do the same.

When I was talking about demands I was referring to everyone "out there" in the gaming community that constantly asks this question.  I chose to comment on this thread because it is a case of "Asked & Answered" that has repeated itself countless times.  Unfortunately, most guys giving the "girl's ass > guy's ass" argument paints us all with broad ugly strokes of being immature pigs.

So I was a bit harsh in my judgement, but as I stated before, having to "justify" why I play both male and female characters gets on my nerves.  It's an issue that's constantly brought up, and I think we've collectively beaten it into a bloody pulp.

I've thought about playing femshep, but then I realize I wouldn't be able to romance Tali.

As a guy I play femshep mostly because male heroes are dime a dozen between movies, games, books, hell even theb bible, etc you can't throw a rock without hitting like a dozen of them but you'd need a tricorder and Mr Spock to find female heroes. Plus i like strong females, the women in horror/thrillers that run around screaming waiting to be saved... I start rooting for the bad guy/ psycho to win. DID (damsels in distress; drive me nuts, i hate them! Well except for Liara in ME1.) My main hero in both DA games were women, same with Skyrim. Dont get me wrong i lime to play scruffy Mr Fenix too, but i like strong women as well. The all just so happen to be lesbians because i like women. Meers voice acting comes off to me more as voice reading, versus Ms Hale i can hear the humor, sarcasm, and threats.

Well it took three games for them to get it right, but finnaly femshep has a nice ass.
That was a Joke Image IPB

Serious answer- why not? I think both Mark Meer and Jennifer Hale are both first rate as Shepard but sometimes they have a different take so to speak on how certain lines of dialogue are delivered, always nice to see how those subtleties play out in play throughs.

Always use default male shep myself but use my own custom design for my femshep plays, which imports fine for me Image IPB

Sorry, your comment was just the first "Ugh, I've seen this a million times!" I saw. It was nothing personal.

Because she is smaller. We barely have any field of vision in the best of circumstances, and maleshep with his prothean beam rifle blocks more than half of the screen.
