Nah, kidding. I'm not a man, but kudos to you guys who play FemShep for reasons other than Space Lesbians and Ass.

I'm sorry, but Samantha Traynor looks too great wet, she's forcing our hand. Wait, that came out wrong. Wait, that came out wrong too.

If it's any consolation, Garrus is the only thing that keeps me from going Space Lesbian for Traynor. And I'm straight.

Honestly, I dont know any women that play male Shepard. Id be interested to hear some reasons that women who do play guy Shep choose to do so.

I always thought FemShep sounds way too masculine. If I were to play a female, I would want her to be feminine. Not a sissy or anything, but distinguishable from a male soldier.

I'm sorry but if you can't distinguish femshep from a male soldier I'd say that's more a problem of your perspective what a woman is "supposed" to be like, I at least have no problem whatsoever distinguishing my femshep from my male one.

Why I prefer playing female characters in games like this? First of all, I like playing female characters, if it's an option in a game, I at least give it a try. One of the reason is that I like characters that challenge traditional gender models. That's the reason I loved Kaidan and especially Ashley in ME1, the "psiguy" with the pistol was the man and the heavy armor wearing grunt the woman? Sign me up. That's why I found Vega a bit boring in ME3 at first, he's just so very archetypical. They gave the character enough depth for me to come and care about him later on, but still.

That fact alone is almost enough reason for me to play female characters much more often than male ones, because, honestly, most main characters in computer games are written with traditionally "male" aspects in mind. They are the strong fighters, the leaders, the tough decision-makers, the prototypical "alpha males". I just enjoy having a female character in such a role much, much more than a male one because for me, personally, it's so much more interesting.

If there are characters that are identified by traditionally "female" characteristics, I'd be a lot more interested in trying to play a male version of those, but let's be honest, not too many of those roles find their way into video games because the way our society views typically "female" characters, they are usually found nowhere near the "front lines", and that's where the main character usually goes. If a character like Yeoman Chambers from ME2 would be playable, I'd be very interested in playing a male version of that. But as long as player characters are the ass-kickers and "alpha males" of the gaming world, so long female characters will be the majority of my gaming characters.

Of course, when I give a game a second or third playthrough, I'll try to make characters as different from each other as possible to get a different experience, so that's usually where the male character comes in.

My gf hasn't gotten around to ME yet, but in Skyrim her first character was a male dark elf, and she's played a male character in DA as well. Never really asked her why because I didn't think there needs to be a special reason for it. I mean I thought about my own reasons, but honestly, why is "I just like playing that character" not reason enough?

For me, I think it is simply interesting to hear someone else's perspective. I know why I play a male character, I know why my wife plays a female character, I dont know other peoples motivations at all.

I only have one MaleShep (and I haven't taken him through ME3 yet), but I've enjoyed him. I will admit, though, that my enjoyment comes more from the relationships he builds with his crewmates than the fact that he's a badass. I see the gruff, hardened soldier stereotype in almost every shooter game I play, so it's a breath of fresh air for me to see one who breaks that mold. Similarly, I enjoy FemShep not only because I'm a female, but because she breaks the female stereotype. The bottom line isn't much different when it comes to enjoyment.

I'm a woman, and I tend to play male characters. For me, I think it's habit - there didn't used to be many opportunities to play a female character (and in many cases there still aren't), much less with a decent backstory. I got used to it, and while I don't avoid female characters, my first main is usually male.

I'm not going to bother reading every page of this thread, but..

The correct answer is: Because Jennifer Hale is the bee's fking knees.

It's why I rolled a female trooper in SWTOR too.

I heard of Mass Effect 1 in 2007, but dismissed it as just another Big-Dumb-Soldier-Spacemman saves the Galaxy with hot alien sex. Meh, I said.

In 2010, I heard Shepard could be a female.
The very next day I bought a copy. 5 days into playing it, when I was about half-way through, I went online and bought the second.

I remember the opening screens- "Choose your character's gender- male or female?"

I gave a littlev whoop.

In EVERY game that gives me a choice, I play as female- though there aren't too many of them (DA2 FemHawke was awesome, pity the ending was so "Meh")

Gets toi the point I want EVERY RPG to give me the option.

I mean, Force Unleashed 2 where you could choose to be a girl? I'd buy that.

Basically, Shepard goes out there to lead her troops unquestioningly. A real breath of fresh air in a media that normally dictates that the women are rescued, whilst the men rescue.

By the way, my Shepard is Vanguard, Earthborn, Sole Survivor. I play BoyShep as secondary, but hardly as often.

When I play Multiplayer, the other players are all, "Look, enemy over there!...what's Lincoln doing?"
"Vanguard CHAAAARRRRGGGEEEEE!"

A bit "LEEEEEERRRRROOOOYYYY JEEENNNNKKKIIIINNNSSS!", but hey, my Shep is a pretty in-your-face character.

I headbutted a Krogan. And punched a Quarian General in the guts before throwing him off my ship. I'm 90% Paragon, but reserve the right to lay the smackdown on Authority figures.

Liara in ME1 (I tried to get Liara, Kaiden and me into a 3some- literally, the game gives you the option of conversation to offer it- but Kaiden wussed out). Garrus in ME2- Liara Funtimes after Lair of the Shadow Broker. Garrus in ME3.

So when Kaiden suggested he luurved me, I was like, "Hey, I offered in ME1, you p*ssied out!"

Lesbians.

But no, seriously, I like to experience both paths when given the option. I may regard my MShep Soldier as my "canon", but I like my FemShep Adept just as much.

There should've been an optional 3some with Femshep/Garrus/Kaidan. Imagine it, Kaidan uses the omnigel/hairgel while Garrus does the calibrations. Would be hot.

*Blushes* thanks!

In ME1, being Earthborn, my old gang tried to blackmail me into killing a dude. I refused. They told me I'd have to pay them or everyone would know my past.

My pistol shoots straight.

I also pistol-whipped David's brother. Best Paragon interrupt!

And I broke Kai Leng's sword.

I played ME1 through twice- the first time I chose Kaiden. Choosing Kaiden, the nude woman in the sex scene was me. I was like, "Hey, I have a nice ass!"

Odd feeling . . .

My "canon" shep is FemShep. My BoyShep has peroxide spiky hair and a little soul patch. I wear a uniform, I shoot guns, but f*ck the military if it thinks it can dictate my hairstyle.

No, Admiral Butthead, you CAN'T inspect my Normandy (ME1). Get out.
