Ya know whats a little frightening? They plan on making a movie, which will basically establish a canon gender. With both sides being passionate, I can see this being a problem. :)

Something about renegade femshep just...works.

I usually do my "canon" run, which is a male paragade shepard. Then, I do a pure renegade run as femshep. I don't usually do a paragon run because most of my decisions in my "canon" run end up being paragon anyways.

I'm female, have played both, and find the male Shep's voice unacceptable for my taste.

I really don't understand threads like this. Why does anyone care about the gender other players prefer? Does it really make a difference?

Lesbians.

But no, seriously, I like to experience both paths when given the option. I may regard my MShep Soldier as my "canon", but I like my FemShep Adept just as much.

Not just Lesbians, but space lesbians. They're better, because everything is better in space.

Why not? It's part of the game.

I have been trying (without success, or I'd link the article) to find this blog post I read a while back where the guy who wrote it basically said the people in his life that he most associated with 'heroic' traits were women (his mom (single mom), female friends, and girlfriend). The guys he knew in his life generally were not so honest or admirable. When he went to play a hero, he chose a woman as a result.

Also, I think some men prefer to see a woman save the world because nearly every movie you see has a guy in the lead. Aaand usually it's a white guy who is decidedly straight. I think some gamers like to mix things up and instead of seeing the same old chestnut where a white guy in a crew cut with big guns and a hot girl on his arm kills the evil aliens, we have a non-white woman in love with a large dinosaur with a sniper rifle. That's not quite what you'd expect, and yet, in the world of Mass Effect, it works awfully darn well.

Or maybe it's because femshep has better hair. She really does.

Edit: But if you were actually serious about getting an answer to this question, post it over on the FemShep thread. I'm sure the guys there would be only too happy to answer your question.

It's an RPG with multiple different paths, so naturally I want to try things differently each time. It's interesting to see how the game plays out if the protagonist is female.

That, and you're staring at Shepard's ass for about 70% of the game, so might as well be a female ass. :P

 Voice acting.

There is no other justification needed. Male voice acting is ****ing aweful.

I always play as guys because I am a guy. It helps me connect to my character better. I tried playing the ME3 demo as a FemShep just to see what it was like, and I didn't care for it. I think Jennifer Hale is a great voice actress, but after playing as MaleShep for so long, her voice just sounded weird for Shepard and didn't fit with the way I believed it should sound after hundreds of hour worth of ecperience.

There was a saying: If I'm going to look at a butt for more than 24 hours, might as well be a beautiful butt.

We will all laugh heartily at the current state of hysteria when/if a 'movie' ever is actually made...

Honestly, I chose a female Shepard because at the time I picked up ME1, it was only the 2nd game I had ever played that even gave me the option of playing as a female lead protagonist instead of just a male and I wanted to experience something different from what I had done before. (Yeah, I never played Tomb Raider or Metroid or [insert game] at that time.)

Female leads were, and still are, underrepresented in games.

I'm glad I chose to play a female Shep first because since that decision she has ended up as my canon Shep (even though I have made dudesheps to experience that content) and I have decided that I prefer Hale's voice talent more.

I seem to be an oddity, I play female for mechanical reasons. In a lot of games in the past, the female characters have had a slimmer shorter build and been harder to hit while being a bit faster. Some games with cover, a male's head or arms will poke out a bit and get shot while a female can stay under cover fully. Been using them so long its just a reflex now.

Men play as female Shepards for the same reason they watch movies with female leads in them...

"It just might be interesting..."

Wow. Since I've basically played more femShep, I never even considered the comparison. Scary how flat Meer is. He is completely monotone.

And the weird thing is that I see a lot of people who prefer Meer say that Hale is the one who's unemotional and bored-sounding. I respect their preference and all, but especially with that video, I can't imagine how one could view Hale's performance as less energetic than Meer's.

Now to me, Hale seems to over-exaggerate a lot of her lines. Meer also does the renegade stuff better in my opinion.

That I can definitely agree with. The Renegade charm for getting into the Omega plague zone in ME2 comes to mind; I can't listen to it without wincing at how over-the-top she is. Even though I prefer her performance overall, I certainly do think that Meer delivers some lines far better than she does.

Sometimes when you want to do a renegade run, but you feel too bad about doing mean things, it helps to make an opposite sex character. That way you feel less like you're the one letting the biotic god die.

Both voice actors are good for me. Both characters are good for me.

They're both Shepard, regardless of gender. Just play what you feel like playing. I play male because I'm male and want to connect to the story more. You want to play female, go ahead. It makes no difference at all other then who you can romance. And they can both romance Liara, and that's all that really matters in my eyes.
