Just killed the Revenent and friends at the start of the mage's treasure quest, with Alistair lv 9, sten, PC and dog at lv 10.  I kited with Sten and ran around those pillars, and my PC and Alistair slowly filled it with arrows (used that longbow that has a bonus against undead).  I found it very difficult because of a scarcity of good health poultices or the ingredients to make them, and I haven't got Wynne in my party yet.  With just 3 poultices left the revenent had a small amount of hp left, so I had Sten turn around and slash him up with his silverite two-handed sword with grandmaster and journey-man cold steel enchantments.  I thought the XP reward for the revenent sucked in proportion to his difficulty.  Less than 200 xp if I read it correctly.

I'm wondering if I've been playing through the game in a "typical fashion", since there seems to be equal groups of people saying the game is too easy and too hard and maybe it just depends on your playing style or the order of the locations you visit.  I find the difficulty just right, neither too hard or too easy.  I'm playing on hard mode for my first playthrough, I've got Alistair, Morrigan, Leliana, Sten, Dog and Shale in my party, but not Oghren, Zevran or Wynne.  My typical party is Morrigan, Sten, and Leliana.  I've explored the west Brecilian forest and half of the east.  I've done the defending redcliffe mission and found the sword there.  I've completed Warden's Keep and Honnleath.  I've done the outdoor section of Frostback mountains, explored the Calenhad docks, done all the quests in Lothering...  Not visited Redcliffe castle, circle tower, or Denerim yet.  My impulse is to go around in circles sampling a bit of each location at a time, rather than conquering each completely all at once.

I'm wondering if anyone has played the game in a very different order to me. :)

Very different. I always go to the mages tower first. First time, I did so because I was a mage...and I had grown up there so figured it'd be somewhat familiar. After that, well...because of what I learned the first time :)

Yea do the tower first, i have played 4 complete games, and am working on number 5, and since the first game i always do the tower first. Wynne, lyrium dust, the tie in to redcliffe all make the tower the place to start imho.

You should start Tower first if only for the fade attribute points, which gives you practically enough CUN to get max Coercion ASAP for non-rogues.

I have many chars and I go first to the location of race if possible, except my dwarf who got to Redcliffe first. Have not completed the game with anyone yet. What I do notice is that in Denerim and Orzammar there are areas not aviable to my party yet so I guess they are ment to be taken last. Redvliffe, the mages and the dalish forest is probably ment to be solved first. But it probably dosen't matter.

Despite what others above have said I think tis best to take Redcliffe and its castle first, then Denerim to solve the Ash quest witch leads to an isolated village in the mountains.
