Hi there!
I've been playing the DA:Awakening Expansion on my PC (both my Origins and Awakening are hard copies) - and I recently bought a CD of DA:Ultimate Edition so I could play the DLC that comes with it.
I found this information that was useful:
4) I already own the original version of DA: Origins and/or Awakening. I just bought the Ultimate Edition. Do I need to uninstall the old game(s) first?
Yes! Failing to do so may cause significant problems. For best results, uninstall the original version of the game, reboot, and then install UE. If you have already installed UE *without* installing the original version first, you may have to do a complete uninstall, clean out the old registry keys, and reinstall Ultimate Edition from scratch!
However, my concern is if I do this, while my character be erased? I've played a fair amount into the expansion already (lvl 30) and would prefer not to replay the enitre expanson back up to the current storyline (or, worse yet - have my DA:Origins character erased by the uninstall process, too!
Thanks in advance for your collective wisdom!

During the uninstall process, you should be prompted to save your characters. A better option is to physically backup the My Documents>Bioware>Dragon Age>Character folder to a different location, and then copy them back after your uninstall/reinstall.
Make sure you reboot after uninstalling the old game and reinstalling the new version. Also, once UE is installed, you'll need to apply patch 1.05 manually.
Cheers,
RI
