Since I can't be bothered to trawl through 113 pages of text on the Mark Darrah on the Conclusion of DAII thread, I was wondering if some kind, knowledgeable soul would tell me if a dev said anything about a change in art style for the Next Thing? I'm personally rooting for one, since I felt that the cartoonish, overly smooth and stylised style of DAII took away from the darkness the series encapsulates.

...Not to mention that it's also despicable.

They probably hope they can keep it /intend to, for present.
It won't work, of course. Eventually they'll realize that.

By the way, you don't have to go through a ton of pages in a thread to see if a developer commented on something specific.

If you see the "Bioware" tag below a thread title, it means a Bioware developer posted in the thread.

Click on the Bioware tag, and it will show the original post as well as all posts in the thread made by Bioware developers.

That will give you your answer MUCH faster.

Can we discuss our preferences in Art in this thread?

Ahem, I would like the People and monsters to be more real like in DA3.

Oh, thanks so much! Though I do feel more than a little silly now :P

Are we talking about them having a more life-like appearance (which I'd classify as being closer to Origins' style)? If so, agreed.

Preferably beyond Origins style in being life like but I don't know if the technology is ready for that.

Bioware will keep DA2's art style. They will just polish something and say "We have listened our fans, we are awesome!"

It will be same for everything in DA3.

A horrible one, in my opinion.

Its only saving graces being Flemeth and the qunari, everything else being below what I thought was acceptable.

I'd head back in DAO's direction as far as art style is concerned.

i certainly hope so,.. the art style was imo a huge step backwards from dao, especially the elves.
Besides that didnt they said that they looked at skyrims art style?

You are very welcome. And do not feel silly.

You started a thread that I personally hope gets a lot of attention and traction.

I despised DA2's art style, so I hope some wonderful Bioware developers will address any pre-development intent they have going forward as far as art is concerned.

I agree. I would also like a return to Origins art style which was dark and grittier than DA2 which felt clean and bland in comparison.

They also need to work on making the environment look more lived in. Origins was packed with details everywhere and houses looked like people actually lived there. DA2 got rid of these details, claiming people didn't care about them, and despite people walking around Kirkwall, I just don't buy that anyone actually lives there.

Yup. I actually agree with most of the re-designs (though there should be more variation in body shape, eg. fat, toned, thin etc.) Flemeth looked good, but she would have looked even better if she had been rendered more realistically, without the overly smooth, manga-like portraylas of DAII. For me, art style is much more than how a game looks. It can shape the tone of the story, and this (for me at least) was particularly true for DAII. Scenes which should have been tragic (the conclusion of All That Remains for example) were instead cliched and evoked no emotion, in no small part due to the cartoonishness of the visuals. Everything was too bright, too clean, too lollipops and sunshine.

Agreed once again. "Gritty" is exactly what DA should be like. The point you make regarding the contrasts between enviroments is a good one. For example, the alienage in Orgins was clearly a hive of pestilence, poverty and filth. You only had to look at it to see this. However, the DAII alienage was probably the cleanest part of Lowtown, despite claims it was worse than in Denerim. And don't get me started on the lego-like foliage and hair...

I quite like the art style in DA2--not that I'm necessarily hoping they keep it, exactly. I'd like the elves, at least, to get fixed up.

DAO's art style tended more toward Realist than DA2's did.

I like Realist art.  I'd like to see DA3 move back toward Realist.

I didn't mind the look of DA2, but the...cleanliness... bothered me.

I downloaded a mod (can't remember which now, I have so many...) which basically grimed the place up and suddenly the game was really transformed: the stylisation came together much better. Hightown was leafy, Lowtown dirty, and so on.

I would like to see the elves fixed a bit, and maybe the combat animations toned down (not to DA:O levels, a happy medium please!), but I did like playing something which made no attempt to hide that the concept art was kept as drawn. Too many photo-realistic games these days!

I get the feeling that bioware is somehow to proud of its art style in da2 to change it again... but since they said nothing is off the table i would suggest you making a poll for this and post the results in the thread, maybe then they will give it a thought

Yeah, agreed.

DA2 felt too "alpha build" as far as aesthetics went.

And they mucked up elves when they were just fine beforehand(my opinion).
