Some armors do have textures depicting typical marks on steel worked in an industrial infrastructure, yes. But that wasn't my main complaint. I complained about the design of new DA2 armors.
What essentially is wrong about them is that they're crazy. I searched the web and Youtube a long time to try to find any game that had as mindless armor design. I couldn't find it. Poor armour, yes, but then there's always still some kind of logic to it. Like WoW, Warhammer, Heavy Metal, Soulcalibur, all those have silly armors that still have a basing in the games' character and culture.

{snip}

How did the artist come up with those designs? My guess is that somewhere in the chain. someone have watched post-apocalyptic movies like Road Warrior, or Transformer anime. I don't believe the artist knew what it was. Just looked cool.

My personal fav is Meredith's armour. It looks superficially cool, until you realise that her shoulders have to bear the weight of that weird piece of plate that covers her upper torso. And that her most vulnerable part is much more lightly protected.
No wonder she's such a sourpuss; her back must be killing her;)

Armour wise, if there's no great big holes for people to stab through then I'm quite happy to accept it.

Bonus points for lack of gratuitous spikes or huge shoulders.

I don't really care at all what armor looks like so long as it doesn't cause an uncanny valley.

edit: floating weapons cause uncanny valley.

If only glorious sheathes had ascended to mandatory components. Nothing quite beats unhooking that axe and then thunking people with it. It's one of those small things that is so madly appreciated its hard to put into words.

I think with some tweaks to the DA2 graphic style the game could look at lot better without starting from scratch. I had a lot of problems with DA2's graphics. They were to clean and more importantly to cartoony, there was nothing dark or serious about them about them. I felt like I was watching Saturday morning cartoons. However after seeing what they did with the ME engine I have full confidence that Bioware can tweak there present engine and make the game look way better.

I don't think floating weapons can really be called uncanny valley. Uncanny valley is a specific phenomenon dealing with things that look nearly but not quite human.

Though I do think we'd be better off having weapons simply disappear when not wielded rather than having them suspended in space inches from the characters back. Particularly since we still seem to have quite a bit of clipping with some weapons

Hated the helmet wearing 'Spawn.  <_<

They really looked ridiculous to me and I hope we NEVER see them again.

It's more specific than that even, it deals with the increased repulsion a person feels when something approaches almost human. It's purely based on the idea that almost human is mre repulsive to humans than unhuman is, but to be honest.. I don't find it to be true.

What most people refer to as uncanny valley is actually just a verimisilitude (as if I can remember how to spell that right) thing (uncanny valley being a very, very specific instance of verisimilitude), of not really understanding the construction of something in your head but being able to percieve it as basically being wrong. vermidstude (can't be bothered) is such a troubling thing for artists because even laymen can understand that things look wrong even if they can't say how, it just has to be fudged as best as possible.

I would like to give my two cents to the thread.

DA2 was a terrible terrible mistake, as far as any decision on a direction is concerned. The especially prominent one, as being very important, is the art style.

It didn't have character, it just took some silly and stupid concepts, and hurled it into one unfinished game. "Let's make it more awesome", yeah right. Bioware doesn't seem to know style and art nowadays.

I think DA2 had some beautiful environments (Kirkwall in particular). Like this for example:

But I had to stop and tilt the camera up to actually see it. Even when zoomed out the camera would tilt right back down again once I started moving. So it became a habit to stop whenever I entered a new area to just look around at the buildings.

Just a small gripe I had with the game.

I suppose when the rest of the game looks as awful as it does, that screen does stand out slightly, but this is the competition.

And this is skyrim, which has both an art style that blows DA's out of the water and massive environments.

I'm interested to see what The Witcher 2 is going to look like on Xbox,it's not going to look that stunning. The level of detail in the Witcher 2 blew me away the first i played it ,it truely is amazing visually.Skyrim is also very good it's a shame it's game engine was a piece of you know what.

Looks like someone dipped Raiden in a vat of nuclear waste and now we have his skeletal incarnation.

I find it absurd that the Darkspawn wear ****ty armor yet can churn out some damn good metal coifs for heir neck and head.

Not sure if this will be related to the art style, but another thing that irritates me is how god awful Teagan looks now.

Old Teagan is not amused at how horrible he was made to look in DAII.

1) New Teagan's hair color is way too bright in comparison to his real hair color
2) New Teagan's facial hair and eyebrows are a completely different color then his actual hair color -- which is, as I said, brigher then his real hair color.
3) His eyes changed from blue to brown
4) I think Bioware changed his nose shape, but I can't really tell with the New Teagan image I posted
5) Teagan's way too pale. Not that it couldn't be excused. I mean, not everyone has a perfect tan. But I just don't think being pale suits Teagan.

I doubt it's related to the art style, but it is something that bugs me. The facial morph system or whatever it is for DAII was very hit-or-miss. A lot of people in DAII looked great, while others didn't.

I have to wonder if Bioware could just implement a sheath where every one handed weapon conforms to the sheath's design, but when pulled out it's how it was designed.

I'd be fine with that. It would get rid of technical limitations methinks.

Axes and maces could just be held in the belt. Shields should just be strapped to the arm at all times.

Bows on the back seems plausible enough to me.

Greatswords/Battleaxes/Mauls are the only one that seems like an issue for me. But I think Skyrim had something on the back of some of the armor that the Dragonborn wears where a Greatsword could be sheathed somewhat. You'd carry it on your back but the handle would be caught by something.

Greatswords could do that, where the handle would be caught at the end. Mauls and Battleaxes would be the opposite, where the actual damaging part of the weapon is what's caught.

Or maybe my game was just experiencing clipping issues. Might've just been that

I lol'd.

Now onto the business at hand: Isolde looks like absolute **** in Mark of the Assassin, compared to her old self. Even without comparing her to her old self, she still looks horrendous.

If Bioware's going to do cameos of the important people, it would be nice if they they could try and make the people look the way they were depicted in previous installments.

When I saw Teagan and Isolde for the first time -- the former in the base game, the latter in MotA -- I didn't recognize them because of how radically different they were. I had to hear their voice just to be able to know who they were.

And then I spat out my drink, because it was just horrific

Not horrific, but horrifically generic. Isolde could be just any other blonde sitting on a bench, while in DAO she had very distinctive features. Which is a general DA2 problem with secondary characters (with some exceptions).

And that helmet darkspawn looks like a zombie. Just did a Walking Dead marathon, though, so I might be a tad influenced. For some reasons, the helmet reminds me of World War I, which doesn't help.

Looking good or even the same isn't really the point. Put another outfit on DAO Isolde, she's still clearly recognizable as Isolde. Do the same with DA2 Isolde, and there's no way to tell it's Isolde.

You mean those horrendous looking French helmets from WWI? Yeah, they do remind me of them. Thankfully, such helmets really did exist in the Middle Ages. But no, that doesn't make them any less hideous.

The French term is chapel de fer, or in German Eisenhut and they existed in different shapes and forms.
They did not all have to be simple and ugly.

Image IPB

The shape of the helmets however isn't the problem. It is the incongruousness of seeing such a helmet on the head of a Darkspawn combined with spiky bits and other crap. When I first took a good look at these worn by Crossbow-wielding hurlocks, I though 'WTF, zombie Genoese crossbowmen with spiky bits'?

Image IPB

The art direction and style (or styles, or lack thereof) is all over the place :?
