Would be nice if a dev could comment on this and give us some definite indication of where they're heading.

I don't think that will happen anytime soon, because I don't think they know.
I think it has been said that everything is on the table. However, I've also got the feeling that they hope to keep most of the current art direction. Somewhere it also goes back to the old 'available resources' argument.

i would like a comment by a dev too, It was one of the things that bugged me the most in da2 and i hope they changed their mind a bit about the art style, since i remember david gaider saying that the elves will stay the same (which i hope isnt true)... the elves... dont get me started about them.
i really didnt liked the plastic treatment in da2 moreover the dull and empty enviroments, they should just go back to dao's art style and take some clues from the witcher 2 imo. The Witcher 2 had a great art style and it was colourfull but yet dark. I hope they dont take that much time only cheking out skyrim, i personally didnt liked its art style and besides that i wouldnt like the idea of a skyrim inspired da2 elf.

I can see that they wanted to make the darkspawn closer to their origin through out the series, but it simply doesn't transition well.

where i agree da2 hurlocks could use a make over, but if you look at develop time(which i dont think it really has an effect) and overall view of the game, why would they add something so graphic from Origins and add them to DA2 when there is no blight and Archdemon, and hardly any screen time, and lack of cutscenes with them in it, i mean sure it would be nice, but still.

Voice or voiceless protags are not relevant to this thread, but the forum IS split 50/50 on it.

As far as art style goes, I imagine the forum is mainly in DAO's favor than DA2's, but there ARE people who prefer DA2's art style to DAO's.

Thing is, it shouldn't be so cut and dry.

People should specify.

For example, I wish characters in DA games could look like Sophia in Assassin's Creed Revelations.

Go to this video, I've saved you the trouble and started it at the scene I want to bring up- 2 minutes in, to 3:25.

Notice the art style, and how it adds to the subtle movements made by Sophia and Ezio, as well as their surroundings.

It makes the scene amazing. Now watch that scene but imagine DA2's art style in its place.

Doesn't work nearly as well.

Of course, you can say, "Duh, the game wasn't built with DA2's art style in mind", but lets be honest-

The realism in that scene, down to the subtle facial movements, the detail-

The Dragon Age franchise can use it.

Well. The art direction is great. But they can and have extensively ripped off reality and history. Those are also just movies. And movies with predefined characters. Which means they can cheat as much as they like. Theoretically they could have pre-rendered it all in advance with Lightwave, if they wanted to (though that would have taken a lot of computers). And they were also 100% motion captured, from what I could see.

It looks great. But it's far from where I want to see Bioware go. I'd rather have movies abolished completely. That's barking up the wrong tree, of course, since Bioware are committed to this cinematic approach. But I would really hate to see them go all the way, to predefined characters, just to be able to make better movies.

I don't know man.

I think they can pull off the realistic art style while keeping the cinematic quality and staying AWAY from predefined characters.

It would be hard, but that's why effort has to go into game dev.

Personally I thought that the art style for Origins was extremely bland, but made sense for the geography of the areas. But considering DA2 there were some pretty good models for it, especially the DLC "expansions".

Not gonna deny that there were some pretty boring environments and also sh*tty lighting. But I think lighting was the bigger issue for DA2 not the style so much.

DAO2/DA3 definitely needs to be more vibrant, that's for sure.

But of course!

I was just remarking that your example was composed of movies. I really only care about gameplay. And I'd hate to see gameplay mode only to be active in combat, all the rest just movies. That would be just terrible. And that's a journey that I will not accompany Bioware on.

The elf design needs some work. Some of them like Merril and Fenris looked fine, but most looked off putting and wrong. Personally I think the ears stick out too much.

Also, work on the darkspawn. With the exception of the genlocks and alphas in Legacy darkspawn looked much better in DA:O.

Ahh, I care about the art style in both cutscenes and gameplay.

I think they can find a way to make the art style more realistic and still keep the dialogue system the way it is.

All Bioware games have cutscenes, but they won't suddenly ramp up the amount of them or have them all predefined just to make the game look better.

My biggest request for DA3 re: art direction is that the visuals should always match the tone of the game. So much of the art was silly, when the tone was serious. It matched in DA:O. The visuals should support, not detract from, the story.

I'd prefer it if there weren't any darkspawn in the game.

Agreed.

I guess DA2 lost some of the realism I felt DAO had, hence me asking for a more realist style for the next game.

Man, the art in DA:O is amazing. I unfortunately only have a console version, and the art is nothing as amazing as the shots I see here. Doubly unfortunate is I don't have a PC - only a mac. Now it is a very fast mac, and I see amazon has a digital download - so I'm considering buying that. (any feedback would be appreciated.)

DAII art? Best left forgotten. I never realized how bad that lighting was - so flat and meh.

Deep Roads.

Sure, if my PC has reason to go into the Deep Roads, they might encounter some, but I don't assume that's the case. In fact, I'd rather that not be the case.

I find this compelling. Is this Bioware-made? Who looks at this and says, "No, it needs more anime with pointy bits"?

If Dragon Age: Origins looked like that, people wouldn't have complained about the artstyle.

But it didn't look like that, it looked like this:

This. I wanted to take DA2 seriously. Couldn't. Honestly, if I were one of Bioware's writers I'd feel like my work was being undermined.

Not trying to stir up trouble.... I want DA to be successful.

So we agree the pic I quoted should be what DA looks like? O.K. I guess we can all go home now. See, if Bioware just let us make all their decisions... /joke

I'm fine with the DA2 art style, though I do feel that the textures need to be tweaked. I have no problems with the new style of Qunari or elves. I think darkspawn should be scrapped altogether. We don't need them in every game. Mindless killing machines make terribly unappealing antagonists.

The Blight was such a big evil in the first game that I just can't see myself worrying about anything less dangerous.

I say bring the darkspawn back. Just don't mess them up this time.

But the Blight wasn't even all that dangerous as presented in DA:O. The Blight was defeated in record time by the fractured and depleted army of a single country plus a handful of allies.

You see it that way. I see it differently.

To me it was defeated so quickly because it never really got underway like the others did.

Normally the Blight affects everyone in Thedas. This time it was stopped right at the start in Ferelden thanks to the combined efforts of Duncan, The Warden, our squad, and our allies.

We got lucky. And I loved that.
