I'm in the market for a tablet and know very little about them.  Any recommendations?

I would use it mostly for reading, online research and note-taking (which I am hoping to do with a stylus rather than a keyboard).  Occasionally for movies when we travel.  Don't have much interest in games for tablet.

I lean towards an Android model.  Even though I have a Macbook, I don't like it and don't like Apple's exclusivity stranglehold.  Open source seems friendlier and more adaptable.  I'd also be glad if I never had to contact Apple customer service or go into an Apple Store again.  However, everyone seems so sold on the iPad.  Why is that?

I'd prefer one with a USB port.  Very thin/ light is not so important.
