Based on that brief response I can reasonably assume at least two things that will be in any ending "DLC":
- there will be an epilogue
- tiny explanatory segments (anywhere between 10-45 seconds each) will be woven into the ending as it is
Here's why both shouldn't be done:
- Epilogue: It's a bad idea because there's nothing left in the current ending that warrants an epilogue. My squad is stranded on some far off planet with the busted Normandy. They don't have enough people to start a diverse society and the odds of some of them (Tali/Garrus) surviving with the food available are slim. I'd say send some rescue team to get them but the mass relays are all destroyed, which leaves the fleet stuck around Earth. Yes, they can still travel without the mass relays but by the time they reached the team, they'd all either be dead or inbred beyond all intelligence. Without those mass relays every civilization is without a huge portion of what's left of their species. It might as well be genocide on a universal scale, even if the mass relays didn't nuke the major planets.
(TL;DR - An epilogue is worthless without a sound, solid ending.)
- Explanatory Segments: Filling in the plot holes with explanation is a good idea, but it is not enough to make a difference with the public dissent of the endings. Adding in minor cutscenes that don't change the ending will not salvage it or even redeem it slightly. Just realize this before doing it.
All in all BioWare needs to rethink the whole "artistic integrity" argument. I understand what it is like when something is criticized that you were genuinely proud of it; it hurts. But "artistic integrity" is just a phrase; a common belief that an artist should not compromise their work for the sake of anyone else. Call me what you like, but I find it selfish. I find it selfish for refusing to let up and give some ground to the tens of thousands of fans, if not many more, that love and support Mass Effect. If I'm wrong in my predictions well then slap me hard and kick me out. We'll find out in April. Just don't forget about your fans BioWare. Never forget about them.
