30 hours in, with bad character development

Having not played a tactical RPG since KOTOR I'd forgotten the golden rule: The jack of all trades is the master of none. Rather than bore you with the inane details*, I'll simply make a bulleted list of my general problems and you can maybe hash out my stupidity for me.

  • I am roughly 30 hours in, with level 9 and 10 characters
  • I have a tank in name only. Alistair has mostly shield talents, but his attiributes do not match the title. Templar spec.
  • I am heavily invested in 4 of the characters stories, I've spent a lot of time on the role-playing elements and do not want to lose this by creating a new game. Granted, creating a new game and character means I can refactor my play style and work out characters that function...but I do not want to waste more time.
  • Two mages, two rogues, two warriors. None of which are really filling out their roles from a tactical stand point.
  • I do not come away from fights without using most if not all of my of pots and injury kits. I lose 2-3 members of the party about 65% of the time.
  • I'm on normal mode, which makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Like internal bleeding or something. Yes, my decisions have really screwed this one up.

Can I swap out talents, attributes etc on certain characters to better push them into their roles? I do not want to "cheat" as it were, but rather fix some of my errors from early on.

Completely unrelated bonus question: I have very little currency in game, it never goes beyond about 5 gold coins. Is that typical? I rarely find decent loot, and I can't seem to ever get enough gold to purchase decent armor. Most of my characters are sporting tier 2 garbage, when they should be in tier 4 or higher. Perhaps my unyielding addiction to pots is causing my gold supply to fail utterly.

Thanks for reading my rantings.

*Damn the WYSIWYG editor this forum uses. I'd spent the better part of an hour outlining my characters, my problems and my questions only to have an errant keystroke take me back a page. The javascript entry form doesn't save any input, which is pants-on-head retarded–normal entry fields in browsers save the content. Needless to say I'm not wasting my time again. If this abomination of an editor can be disabled, let me know. [edit: lovely, the editor also chucked in a bunch of line breaks for no good reason]

As for money, a good way to get it is to always look for the "is there a reward?" option.
Other than that, killing the dragon in the elven ruins nets you 20g+, any sort of boss kill will generally get you nice money.

You may also want to notch it down to Easy, and then once you feel more comfortable, start again with set plans etc on a harder difficulty.

if you are playing on pc: did you patch or not? the unpatched version is about 1,5 times more difficult than your difficulty setting indicates imo.

pick 3 companions. stick with them. develop a consistent battle strategy for your fixed party. a good party has a tank, at least one high output damage dealer, and at least one source of crowd control on demand. healers help too but are not quite as mandatory as the other three roles so long as you can chug health poultices (which requires being able to manufacture them with an herbalist).

Assuming you have Morrigan in your party, she is at the very least, only one level up away from getting the Cone of Cold spell.

Purchase it, if you haven't already, and then spend lots and lots of time micromanaging her to lock down enemies. You can't fail at this game once you get good at it.

If on the PC the respec mod works real well, i used it pretty early in this my 5th runthrough with sword and board. I was having problems working Allister in since i am the tank but with the respec mod i made Allister a 2h spec warrior along with Sten and find that they both do well in that role as long as your tank can maintain aggro which i can. I also respecced Morrigan to heal bot just like Wynne and this allows me to do more things with out having to deal with the negative feelings of making decisions that the people you HAVE to bring won't approve of. Like in Redcliffe when you give the sister and her brother money after you find him in the dresser Morrigan frowns on that but Wynne likes it so this allows me to tailor my group to what choices i intend to make.

It took me a sec to figure out but you have to leave camp with the potion from the raven in inventory and the person you want to respec in your party and just like giving a gift have them up in the window and bamm! you got a new party member.  Some folks might look upon the respec mod as cheating but i preffer to look at it as a fix for the oversite on Bioware's part.

Run back into another room to get a better tactical position Or use line of sight.

Do not let your group run wild. They like to get seperated and everyone will get hit. Keep them together and will help the Tank keep aggro.

Target Priority Mages->Trash->Yellow/Orange Mobs.

As for Morrigan: as Mentioned get CoC. Make good use of Sleep. Get Force Field

Well you're not in the best of positions like you pointed out, but it ain't a total loss yet.

Your characters are level 9-10 so you can still salvage alot if you start making hard choises right now.
First of all, make up your mind concerning all characters now. Like you said, a jack of all trades is a master of none. Specialize. NOW.

- Morrigan

 * Get "Cone or Cold" or "Fireball" - They'll make dealing with groups alot easier
 * Get "Force Field" - Use it on the hardest enemies in groups to put them out of the fight for a while. It's cheap, but it'll help alot.
 * Get "sleep" - Another great CC spell.

-Alistair

 * Get taunt
 * Get his strength to a decent level. Don't rush to get to get past 38 str and remember 42 max.
 * Not everyone will agree with me, but don't go all out on con. Focus on dex, anything past 18-20 con feels like a waste from my experiences.
 * Make sure any armor upgrades go to him first.
 * Let him run into groups of mobs first

- Sten & Oghren

 * Go all out on 2 handed talents with him.
 * Get willpower up to 18 or 20
 * Do not invest in dex or con focus on strength entirely.
 * Indomitable, learn to love it. When you go to bed, dream of it.

- Liliana

 * Get "Lethality"
 * Raise Dex and Cunning
 * Do not go past 35 Dex

Sticking with these points should help you quite abit already. Furthermore, make sure your tactics are sorted for all your characters. Sitting down for half an hour to get your tactics sorted can make a huge differance on itself. Especially for your healer(s), make sure their first tactic slot is "ally <50% Health -> heal".

Also make sure to use bows to thin down large groups of mobs, you can pull them one by one if you're lucky and far enough away. Be sure to also make use of corners and narrow passageways. There's nothing wrong about "tactical retreats" and can cut down the need for pots quite a bit.

As for your money problem
 * Do some sidequest from the chantry's board, mage cult or the mercs. Most of them are easy and give 2-3 gold per quest.
 * If you're really burning a hole in your pocket because of pots, go and loot all the elfroot in area's you've already cleared and let your potion brewer make the lowest healthpots in mass (They remain decent through the entire game).

I was not aware of a patch for the game. Where do I find this patch?
Thanks in advance.

Bacially what Sirsmirkalot said.

Just add a few things to his.

* Not everyone will agree with me, but don't go all out on con. Focus on dex, anything past 18-20 con feels like a waste from my experiences.

I agree completely but I would say DO NOT put a single point in constitution - its the most useless attribute in this game for almost every class and specialization. There is like 1 or 2 specializations that will benefit from having high Con and that is all. Most people who complain about their tanks dying or saying they are struggling in this game are people who stack Con on their tanks. Get strength to 42 max (not all at once - get Dex to 26 as priority so you can get the vital sword and board stuff) then Dexterity all the way after strength is at 42. High Dex will make Alistair pretty much untouchable to most things even on Nightmare difficulty.

- Sten & Oghren

* Go all out on 2 handed talents with him.

* Get willpower up to 18 or 20

* Do not invest in dex or con focus on strength entirely.

* Indomitable, learn to love it. When you go to bed, dream of it.

I disagree about the Dex part - get your dex to 18 to get disengage. It will save your dps warriors life alot. It is the opposite to taunt.

As for other things - once you have a properly specced tank - this game becomes considerably more managable. You don't need a healer in this game but it helps, and you can have your healer with the CC as well.

I dont use the respec mod as I am one of those who feel its a bit cheating. But I do understand where the people who do use it are coming from. I have to agree that the variety of rogues/mages to join you in this game is really bad and lacking.

I would say go ahead and cheat ( http://dragonage.wikia.com/wiki/Cheats ), just addtalent the one you would rather have (and if you have the prereq) and get rid of the one you felt was a mistake.

As long as you are making sure you have the stat requirements, and are doing an even exchange. I don't see it as a big dilemma. Not like you're giving yourself god mode or something.

I play on hard, and I find that I have to continuously update my battle tactics. You have to analyze each situation and decide the best way for your characters to behave. It takes extra time, but that is part of the challange in playing a tactical rpg imo. Start out by having all the other party members attack through controlled players target. That's a good way to knock targets out quickly one by one. That's not ideal with every situation though.

Two points:

1) Alistair is an awful tank until relatively late in the game. Shale is much much better through the early going. Train up the Stoneheart line and don't even think about swapping Alistair back in until he's wearing massive armor and has both Shield Expertise and Shield Mastery.

2) The respec mod linked above will make your life much easier as well.

awful is an exageration. Alistair is perfectly fine at tanking even from the very beginning of the game. Shale has certain advantages during the early game but is thoroughly outstripped by Alistair at later levels.

Its a very slow tactic but I use stealth and pull mobs to me with bow, while the rest of my group hides behind something (line of sight) then have them all beat the poor whatever to death. (rinse and repeat)

I honestly wasn't expecting this much of a response. Needless to say, it's helped immensely! I've respec'd two characters and dropped to easy. What a breakthrough!

Thanks everyone, really enjoying the game again. I'll bump up to normal again soon I think.
