I think there should be a new specialization for the DPS mage, such as Elementalist - one who is skilled with fire, lightning, etc. Possibly the four specialization slots could each add progressively more elemental damage, with maybe some elemental resistance thrown in.

How about a specialization that involves summons? Sorry, maybe I've been brainwashed by WoW, but it's not a bad idea.
Edit: Right now I think the Ranger specialization is the only one that lets you summon something.
