I really couldn't care less if they copied it from a song. The series are fantastic and the only bad part is the ten minute ending (which they are fixing)
Lots of companies use a song to inspire their work, so why should Bioware be slated for something millions of people do.

Even if you completely ignore the picture, there's still the song text.

read my post on page 4

Soon I'll join the endless whirls of stars
And I fall (something is dying, yet something is born)
- Synthesis ending. Shepard falls, something is dying (Geth), something is born (new hybrid races)

All of this just a coincidence? I think not.

Again my argument is that the song is irrelevant and that the more damning revelation is the use of a stock wallpaper image for the basis of the final visual representation of the entire mass effect series.

I read this article and find it very relevant: I don't think everyone has heard about the Weekes Debacle yet, and Whether Bioware bans my account for contributing to it shines a light on their "after-EA" antics.

The article hits home on a lot of good points.

*sigh* ok people this is getting kinda silly now.
We all want something to blame for the ending but this is not it. First lets adress the image, as someone else has already pointed out, that image has nothing to do with the song!
There is a youtube video with the song from when it came out, 4 years ago, and the image used there is the actuall COVER IMAGE for the album wich the soung is featured on. The image of the forest and 2 moons have nothing to do with this song, someone just thought it was a nice pic and added it to the song in a youtube video beacuse it goes well with the theme.

And secondly, where is the similiarities with the song and the ending? The lyrics are very cryptic, i've listened to Wintersun for years and they make beautiful lyrics that are also very....loose....and open for interpretation. Here, some examples:
"You cannot save them anymore - Wanderer of time - It's too late now - Creator of Dimensions - Destroy the walls of time Hands of the blind are holding your fate Tides of life will take you away, will take you away "

"I've hold the fire within myself Years I've walked in the coldest winds Through the deserts of sand and snow The time is passing and I know, that I'm wasting my life, destroying my dreams I'm diving into the bottomless sea From sorrow and pain I find my strength the more pain I feel, the more I see Now I'm watching my life flowing in the dark"

The song is very poetic and cryptic in it's lyrics, the so called similarities between the ME ending and the lyrics are nothing more than similarities between the ending and your interpretation of the lyrics, take a look again, the lyrics are supposed to give you inner visions of sci-fi fantasy themes and that it does very well, doesnt mean it is the source of the ME ending. People are just clawing for evidence here.

and lastly, stop hating at Wintersun! Sheez! We are all angry and upset but why bash at an exellent metal band for it? The song is not sung by Vorcha, that's called growling, it's common within the Metal Music genre, the drummer is not epileptic, that's power metal, it is a fast paced music genre and i for one think the music is awesome, so please, just stop insulting the band! They are not at fault for your frustrations, try to behave like adults here please.

If you honestly think that tweet is real or that the song even remotely resembles the ending of ME3, your tinfoil hat is on too tight and its clearly cutting off blood flow to the brain. Image IPB

Take another glimpse at the new picture I just added, and then come back here and tell me that once more.

They are the same in every way possible.  Trees are grouped the same.  Snow is the same.  Double moon is nearly the same.  EVERYTHING is almost a carbon copy.

I have no tinfoil hat.  I have eyes, ears, and logic.

Generic scifi image is generic. You see patterns where there are none.

On the contrary, my brain is STILL picking up patterns in this whole ordeal.

The trees, snow, position, camera angle, and about 80% of BOTH images are near mirror images of the other.  They were so similar that I had to make sure I knew which was the game and which was the music video.  Include the lyrics.  Include the title.  Include everything else.  Include even the philosophical points of both video and game, and the evidence simply overwhelms my doubt.

Too.  Many.  Coincidences.  My brain can't and won't ignore this or believe it all to be chance.

And yet more:  Bioware is infamous for other similar actions with the same type of shady behavior.  It is far within Bioware's capability to do exactly as I think they did.

You disagree, and you have reasons for doing so.  I understand.  At the same time though, I have been studying both video and game for hours and hours.  What I am finding is too much for myself to call chance.

And heres where your conspiracy theory completely falls apart.
Image IPB
That is the actual cover art for the Wintersun Album.

The image used in the video is called winter_snow_tree_fantasy, its a generic wallpaper image thats prolific once you know what to look for. There is no connection to the Starchild song and the image beyond that video.

The term starchild was coined by the forum goers, not Bioware, theres no connection based on the title of the song.

I listened to the whole song and can say with certainty that it has nothing to do with the ME3 ending, your grasping at straws.

The background image in the video has no connection to the song, its just a random wallpaper someone decided would make a good background for the video.

The winter_snow_tree_fantasy image might very well be the inspiration for the Stargazer scene, but as I said, the image is incredibly prolific and is provably older than the video, so theres no reason to assume that the video has any connection to the Stargazer scene beyond both the video poster and scene artist liking that particular image.

In my mind, nothing is crumbling.  I am not grasping at straws.  I am doing nothing that YOU claim as FACT, when what you say is OPINION.  I would ask that we both make effort to tone this all down.  It is all getting..... heated.

Anyways, I agree to wholeheartily disagree on all the above.

You say that, in your opinion, you have listened to the song and heard nothing similar to ME3.  I have listened to it a mind-numbing 10 times or so.  Sometimes only looking at the colors and thinking about where they are placed in the song.  Other times, I was intentionally more attentive to other things.  I also read the lyrics a dozen times, and the parallels leap out at me like they want to be found.  Dozens of them.

I concede you a point:  Individually, the evidence is wobbily.  HOWEVER, it is the sum of the whole argument that I believe proves beyond any odds that it is far beyond mere coincidence.

And talking a bit more about the image and the song in relation to one another:  The point at which both image and song are linked is well enough in the past for Bioware to take all needed inspiration and adopt it into the game by simply viewing it any date after July 6th, 2011.  The youtube video was released on July 6th, 2011.  See video to confirm.

My point:  Who is to say that he did not watch the very video in question while brainstorming for ME3 and gain all he needed then and there?

He does not need the original track.  He does not need ANY of the older versions.  He has Youtube!  What is more, the video has the lyrics, which could have easily sparked the ideas to the endings we hate.

One final thing:  I would like to know where you are getting the "Starchild" name was created by Bioware Fans?  You state it as indesputable fact.  Where do you have your basis in it?  I think the name is fitting enough to be given by multiple people independent of one another.  "Godkid" and "Littlebluepunk" do not fit.  Starchild does, and the name comes easy.

My mind is never closed.  If I am wrong, I am wrong!

But, right now, I maintain the conviction I have and continue to strengthen it.

Pretty much all artists draw inspiration from somewhere else.. What do you guys want? For them to close themselves off completely from the outside world? Seriously.. This nitpicking about every goddamn thing is getting old. Just sayin'...

cool find, but do we really need yet another topic for it? There are several already, the latest having 20 pages already: social.bioware.com/forums/forum/1/topic/355/index/9993946/1

What do I want?

For Casey Hudson to stop turning a universe I treasure into the hybrid offspring of his imagination and a screamo rockband.

THAT is what I want.

If he wants to base the alternate ending off something else that DOESN'T suck, GREAT!

At first I though this post was a joke, I could not believe it was possible for bioware to act so cheap, with such dilettantism. Then I looked at the date when video was posted – summer last year. No wonder that ME3 ending always felt so wrong for me, apparently this”ending” does not belong to ME3 at all, it has no part in it, it is from some other story that has nothing to do with ME3.

Yes, it is ok to use something for inspiration, especially when you start something. But when you end story, especially trilogy, you have to be focused on the trilogy, not on something totally different, otherwise ending will have nothing to do with the trilogy.

Well if one cloud looks like a lion, another like a zebra, another like a monkey and the next like a giraffe then I see a zoo.

Welcome to what appears to be reality.  Cookies are on the table to your right, and the milk is on the counter in the room to your left.  What is mine is yours.  Enjoy!

Hate the ending as much as anyone else here, but come on, that tweet about wintersun is an obvious fake.

Bad Songs make Bad Endings.

Disastrous news. Is Houdson tweet real thing? Another blow to ME3 ending :(
Please just scrap all of it and give us Dark Energy ending...

Pity he didn't go for Rhapsody or something that at least sounds good.

The tweet may or may not be real.  It hasn't been established either way.

But yes.  Disastrious news indeed.  I am MUCH too tired to send this to the news outlets I planned, but a friend took up the slack and is likely doing exactly that as we speak.

That is just... bizarre. Good find though, I had a brief train of thought that the entire mass effect series reminded me of the different Ayreon albums with the race "Forever" killing organic life after providing science and technology - but this is even more spot on.
