ME1 is a great game.

Admittingly it does feel a bit slower paced coming back to it after ME2 and ME3.  But that goes away after a bit.

Well, it was the intro.  It builds up.  If you do it right you play ME1 first and get the full intro to the galaxy, the physics, the history, etc.  That shouldn't just drop on you like a bag of cement.

I blame the Citadel sequence for that, mainly. That hub is way bloated and really drags down the rest of the story, despite how great Virmire, Noveria, etc, were.

I loved the story and the universe of me1 and had a great time but there was alot of gameplay "clunkyness". I can't really bring myself to go back to it because of those. :(

You're not alone. I loathed the gameplay, didn't particularly like the story, and didn't really care about any of the characters except Wrex. The only reason I stuck with the series is that I saw potential in the universe, potential that ME3's ending sadly discarded.

Aside from planet exploration and the Citadel, that was my other huge issue: I didn't particularly like any of the cast, outside of Wrex, which is kind of a downer.

At first I thought I really liked Tali, but then I realized I just liked how she could open boxes.  I was using her for her electronics.

Yes the intro of any narrative should be a high point but the scale, after the initial drop, should be reached again before half-way point of the story. Going from Sovereign + Saren + Geth to Collectors + Harbinger is almost a step backwards

In fact, I think Bioware should have started the ME trilogy with the Collector sub-plot so the stakes would have increase in the second game

ME2 plot feels like filler only because of previous expectations. On its own it would suffice

Wow, the gameplay was just terrible. TERRIBLE. Especially the cooldown ammo mechanic and those horrible crosshairs. Its only saving grace was the story and awesome dialogue. But other than that, I hated it. It was a chore to play.

Sorry.  I loved ME1.  More than ME2 actually.

Mass Effect 1 is my favorite game of the current console generation (though I don't play it on console anymore). I played the heck out of that game, and every time, I liked it more. KOTOR > Jade Empire > Mass Effect 1. These are the games, and in that preferential order, that made me take a solid look at games from the west and realize that we had some great professionals in that industry.

Mass Effect 2, I played just the one time. With exploration gone, and the very formulaic pattern of "meet member, do their quest, and let's go"... it just did not click with me. I guess, because I loved ME1 so much, that I was particularly disappointed with it. And to this day, I haven't touched it again.

ME3 showed me that Bioware was back in the game. I was absolutely amazed with everything the game had, minus the ending (which I won't go into here). But everything else was perfect. Don't know about the multiplayer part though, because I haven't gone near that one with a ten foot pole.

ME1 was the best in the entire series.

Someone else understands.

ME1 was very generic.

I don't think you understand the word.. but I'll bite. Generic in what way? And what makes Me2 and Me3 non-generic?

If anything, those are a rollercoster of cliches.

Yes you're the only one. between the two ME > ME2 between the three ME>ME3>ME2. Really we learned nothing in 2 other then the reaper's pawns are poor at defending bases of importance, and all of what occurred in 2 got invalidated, forgotten, or just plain ignored in 3.

I did exactly like you, got ME2 first (boycoted ME1 because of securom), then i got ME1 later (securom free edition) because i was really curious and wanted to "extend" my ME experience.

The gameplay was really a kick in the quad... it was damn painfull, all the "ennemy's everywhere, i'll destroy you" sooned so retarded too.

But Graphic was nice (some part even better than ME2), the main plot devloppement was definitly better, the RPG element was deeper, and the last level of the citadel with sauvereign giant metal tantacul above me was one of the best and amazing moment of my video game experience.

So, once i got used to the gameplay, the major flaw of ME1 that ****** me off is spending half the game wasting my time on the mako, otherwise, i love ME1.

ME1 has flaws. You need patience and imagination to look past them and see the beauty.

ME1 has defined the name. It is bad enough that BW jumps arround so much in their game design that it can actually happen that people come here and say they hate the original game that started everything.

Just when you think these forums can't get any more retarded...

ME1 was THE Mass Effect game. I really wasn't looking for a Gears of War shooter when it came to Mass Effect. Heck, I don't even play RPGs often, but the universe and the strength of the storyline in ME1 dwarfs ME2 and ME3.

Not saying I didn't enjoy ME2, but I agree with the person that said ME2 was the "dumbed-down" version. And ME3....well we know about its issues. You can really see that BW either started writing the storyline for ME2 after ME1, or they abandoned whatever original plan they initially had.

No I loved ME1, but if I had played ME2 first I might agree with you, based on gameplay that is. The story's still awesome, but the side missions get in the way.

Pretty much.  I suspect it is a sign of declining age of players.  Younger likes nothing but shiny, ffast, run-and-gun.  Cut the deeper aspects, gut story.  Skip to the blood and gore (and T-n-A).

I DO agree, in retrospect, that the plot of ME2 would have been better as the plot to ME1 (with slight adjustment to make it fit) with ME1's plot being better as the plot to ME2.   ME3 belongs as third and needs an ENTIRE rewrite of the last 10-15 minutes.  And it clearly needs a LOT of DLC to fill in the body.

People, you judge ME1 wrongly.  You base your impression of ME1 gameplay upon ME2...but ME2 is only an improvement of gameplay because ME1.  They jigger and adjust each game as they learn what worked well, what didn't, and what might work better.  Of COURSE ME2 gameplay should be an improvement over ME1 - they LEARNED from ME1.

ME1: Excellent storyline, introduction to ME universe. Stoping Soverign and Saren. Council finally convined

ME2: Randomly killed by new semi-antagonist. Randomly aligned with Cereberus. Random Human Reaper. No progression of main plot except Reapers like Human Smooothies.

ME3: Skipped over loose ends from ME2, jumps right into invasion. Pretty good story in getting all the races together...LOL ending.

I loved ME1, but I think you would have had to play them in sequence. Going back shows up it's flaws I guess. It still has a special place in my heart as it started what was to become my favourite games of all time (apart from......well, you know!)
