Am I the only one who hates ME1?

It's superb if you don't do all the sidequests. That ruins the experience so much.

Apart from the gameplay there was that as well...
Sidequests (exploring) were too bland.

I actually played ME2 first and loved it so much I thought I'll go back and check out ME1.
Wow, the gameplay was just terrible. TERRIBLE. Especially the cooldown ammo mechanic and those horrible crosshairs. Its only saving grace was the story and awesome dialogue. But other than that, I hated it. It was a chore to play.

Gameplay before anything else. Story and dialog are awesome, but hates ME1 because of gameplay they didn't like.
That's Bioware's target audience and new mission statement summed up in two depressing sentences.

Two things I didn't like was, having to carry every single weapon (pistol, shotgun, assault riffle, sniper rifle) didn't really make sense to me. If I can't use it don't let me carry it. Second, the first few hours are tad dry.
The inventory was clunky but doable.
Gameplay was good. Can't obviously run and gun without your accuracy going down. Getting to cover didn't require button presses made it seem more fluid to me. Crouching improved accuracy.
You could get mods to increase your stats such as accuracy, kinetic stablizers (reduces recoil and shakes), shield generators and such.
Like how they turned the loading screens into elevators rides. I still miss the banter on those things on the citadel or watching the normandy pull into the dock while it loads. ( I do like how the crew is out about on the citadel though in ME3)
Loved the Mako and planet exploring.
The story was pretty good. I loved the ending it was Epic and still is.

ME2 and ME3 are "modern" games compared to ME1, but they don't bring much new. They do better in certain areas but much worse in others. Most gaming companies are able to improve their games in all aspects over time. BioWare is not one of them, and they have changed their "style" drastically.
ME1 is/was a much better game than ME2 and ME3 combined in my opinion - at launch.

Why cant we have both? ME 2 does, therefore its the better game.

I once did two Mass Effect 1 playthroughs back to back, the first where I completed all the side quests and the second where I only completed the main quest. It's insane how much more enjoyable the second playthrough was. I've said it before, but good side quests died with Jade Empire.

It was just mindless fun with all of the biotics flying all over the place.

Couldn't have stated it better myself.
That, ladies and gents, is the finest example of Bioware's decline.

You're just an above average Joe or Jane, unwittingly thrust into the galactic spotlight due to some convoluted and intreging circumstances. You're asked to something that felt natural and well paced, and there was far more mystery, and developed answers written into ME1 than ME2 and 3 combined. From "THE" (as in who the reapers are and why they are trying to ruin our day) story point of view, ME2 offered nothing other than the protheans are these new peeps "the collectors". Then of course, we get the ME3 child of the stars debachle.
Even the lean and light appearence of ME1 armor had a certain frailty that helped keep the scope of how small the game made you feel. It felt space-age. Apparently the universe went back to the galactic middle ages between ME1 and ME2, because now shep is a Gears-esque super-soldier with 3inch thick battle armor complete with paladrones and a strap-on nuke.
Yes the combat gameplay had issues - but mass effect was not envisioned as a combat intesive game originally. It was, to a certain degree - a spiritual successor to KOTOR and Jade Empire with an innovative spin. A whole other beast has come out of ME1's popularity and EA's interest in Bioware's successes.
I like ME2, and overall I like ME3 - I even like the multiplayer. But in my opinion ME1 represents the golden age of this series - The transition between ME1 to ME2/3 felt like Michael Mann's movie HEAT had two sequals directed by Michael Bay.

Oh, good thing you noticed the story and dialogue, since, well, that was kind of the whole point. Sorry the shooter mechanics weren't up to your exacting standards.

I actualy enjoyed ME2's story more and I bought ME1 at launch. The improved gameplay and reworked stremlined mechanics were just icing on the much improved cake. That being said I dont hate any of the ME games but there are few things I hate about them.
ME1: Mako & boring sidequest
ME2: Planet Scanning
ME3: Ending
That's something close to my list, as well.

Eh, I liked ME1, but in comparison to ME2, it feels like a chore to get through.
That.
Solid game, but I felt the sequels were both overall both funner to play and more memorable storywise. I mainly play ME1 to make imports for the other games. Not that it doesn't have it's own charm, but it just doesn't call to me like it does to some people.

ME3 in this way found nice compromise betwen 1 and 2, it was upgrade which took from both parts better halfs.
But what i must admit is ME1 on highest difficulty was a realy chalange beating through lot of enemies and bosses was realy great. ME2 change playstyle of game but still preserved atleast fine difficulty, but ME3 highest difficulty is so disgusting that is not even chalange yes you can find a few passages where you will find a chalange but otherwise it is dishonour of previous games.

So probably ME1 is my "least" favorite title from the series but still one of the best games I have ever played but not at all terrible.
