Except for Shep getting so much better with it over the course of ME1, that is.

Wow, the gameplay was just terrible. TERRIBLE. Especially the cooldown ammo mechanic and those horrible crosshairs. Its only saving grace was the story and awesome dialogue. But other than that, I hated it. It was a chore to play.

The only thing i hated about Mass Effect 1 was the mako's terrible handling and the constant game crashes. Everything else was gravy

for me Me1 was the final episode of innocent time, before ME1 games where fun, and they came whole, DLC did not exist and the developers made it for entertainment and had alot of fun put into it. ME1 is still to date one of those few rare fun games who puts no focus on Multiplayer, Quicktime event, nor greed. the 2 patches to ME1 came with free content, and game game itself was slow and relaxed, even at the hardest setting.

Because of the story, ME1 is still my favourite of the series. Wonder if Bioware would consider porting it to use the ME3 engine and combat mechanics?

Seriously play ME1 again or play actual GOOD games that have good combat, and good mission design, and good level design.

If you play games with actual GOOD combat...well you should feel the same way about ME2 and ME3. Seriously, go play a Third Person Shooter like Gears of War (1, 2 or 3) and compare the cover and shooting mechanics to any of the ME games - it's not even in the same league.

One would expect many flaws to be corrected from a game released in 2007...if the sequels didn't address any problems with mechanics something would be seriously wrong. I played ME1 recently and the combat system wasn't spectacular, but it wasn't the main draw of the game. In ME2/3, the main draw is the combat...which still lags behind true shooters by light years.

I personally loved ME1. I tried to pick up ME2 first and loathed it for so many reasons.

Then I played ME1 and realized what ME2 was and fell in love with the series. Heck, I even liked the Mako bits. I could never drive in games anyway, so bad controls didn't bother me. =D

Some people don't like mass effect 1 because they don't like/ understand the combat system.

I really enjoyed me1 I thought it had a great story and great characters.

me2 was better though

Wait, so I'm confused. So you played ME1, then hated ME2. Then played ME1, then loved ME2? What caused the judgment change?

OK, let's not forget the moon mission. It was easily the most boring side mission being introduced in any game.

For me it's that memorable because overall ME1 was the best in the series.

Combat system in ME1 !? Aweful AI makes combat really annoying in ME1 and you can run around in the open and not worrying about dying (except for Snipers) and yes that is on Insanity. Also the fact that every organic enemy has Immunity on the higher difficulties just makes it more tedious since it doesn't make it harder (since you can't die anyway).

ME1 has great story and the best main missions in the serie and that is imo what makes the game great.
ME2 had a decent story, poor main missions, combat however was vastly improved.
ME3 got a story, the telling of this story is better then ME2 though. Missions are better then ME2 and combat is improved even more.

ME1 = ME3 >> ME2

If they updated ME with the unreal engine and gave us the hammerhead instead of the Mako I'd be loving it. At the moment, I'm only liking it.

I prefer DA:O to DA 2 but I don't hate DA2, I prefer RPG's to shooters in general, but I prefer the later ME games to what I have experienced so far in ME1. I haven't got far enough yet to judge the story and characters.

Also, that sniper rifle scope shake is terrible for a trained, professional Marine Sniper I can hold things more still then that when I am trying to. Infiltrator Shepard should be able to as well. I'm not saying dead still, but less shaky for certain.

ME1 gameplay wasn't great. In fact when I first played it, I stopped playing after Eden Prime because I didn't like the gameplay (combat, exploration mechanics, inventory mess, etc).

Hang on.... You've barely experienced the things you crticise the game for at that point.
Eden Prime is the beginning of the game. There's not even any exploration mechanics until after your first  visit to the Citadel.
You've barely scraped the surface of that game at all until after you get made a Spectre.

ME 1 had weird mechanics, no doubt, the game only becomes enjoyable (combat wise) much later on, and a about ten levels after it becomes enjoyable, it breaks down and provides no challenge.
2 and 3 had much better balance and pure shooter gameplay.

But there was something magical about that game.

It broke down and provided no challenge because they overdid it with the weapon mods, which allowed for weapons with near zero heat generation and absurd damage.

Beginning to middle of the game, it was balanced.
After that, it gets ridiculous.
An out of place inventory system also made it tedious as time went on.

Their solution was completely reworking the weapons by removing mods, switching ammo mods to being a class power, and ripping out the exploration aspect of the game entirely, later replacing it a basic platform mini-game that didn't even come with the right tooltips for the PC version.

Only specter weapons had zero heat w/ tremendeous damage and only while moded with best avaible mods and you had to be level 50+ (means having ended game at least once) in order to get them.
Inventory was great, was RPG like which is kind of expectable for a RPG you know <_<

It was good for hoading stuff, and removing inventory + weapon mods ended in removing also Omnitools / Implants / Omnigel / Armor mods and armors variations all together.

Yep

You are totally mad or you are just a newgamer (no offense)

ME1 is by far the most played game by me. Lot of conversation options, things to do, great acting, a lot of suspense that after me1 clarifies through me2 and me3 (Even the sidequests!) so yeah.you have some problems there.

Try to give it another try ;)

ME1 was awesome. Best game in series followed by ME3 (ending aside). ME2 came off as a cheap filler that was used to get shooters and ps3 people on board. The EA-fication of Bioware hurt ME3 IMO.

Gameplay wasn't that great, story was hands down my favourite, but the characters in ME2 won my heart and ME3 had a great mix of both worlds, till the ending.

Not being a huge shooter fan, I didn't find the actual mechanics "horrible", about 20 hours into it I certainly began to LOATH the inventory / loot system. It actually took me a while to accept the gameplay mechanics in ME2 and I still feel that the single button for SPRINT and going into COVER is one of the worst gameplay control configurations EVAR! While it is slightly improved in ME3, you still can't spint by cover spots without accidentally falling into cover (often with deadly results). Very frustrating (but not as much as ME1s inventory system).

I do feel bad for someone that never played ME1 going back to it after ME2 or ME3....gotta be a painful experience (tho it does point out how much EA influenced changes to game once it took over...for better or worse).
