I don't hate it, but about 50% of the game is mind numbing boredom. Riding in elevators, driving around planets in the Mako, running around. I am trying to do a full series playthrough right now and I find it does not long in ME1 before the unrelenting tedium forces me to quite and do something else.

Driving Mako on huge planets - love it
Weapon skills that change the way I play - love it
Being able to crouch so I don't have to glue myself to cover - love it (though roll almost makes up for it)
Weapon cooldowns that allow customization (powerful 1 shot or continuous weak, yea you can exploit it and make godkillers but that's besides the point) and make you think whether to wait for cooldown or fire away and risk being defenceless instead of just 0.5 second reload - love it
Levels that don't feel like they're designed solely for firefights - love it
Spamming powers - love it

Yes using early assault rifle with almost no skill is pain and could be better, but it's RPG. You don't just grab the best weapon and kill everyone. You can easily complete ME2/possibly 3 without upgrading or using skill points which makes it seem pointless.

ME1 is the weakest on the gameplay front (but the exploration is one of the best thins about it) but its the story that makes ME1 great.

ME2 the best all rounder has the great gameplay (except for just being a shooting gallery, greatest variety of squad mates that were the most interesting and the greatest variety in side missions (all of them really well done with back story to each of them)

ME3 brilliant game (improved gameplay over ME2) that was let down with the lack of character dialogue especially if you did not romance an ME3 squad member (the side missions most the time are not worth mentioning because they are pick up and drop off missions) but severely cut exploration to the point that only one location is explorable and its not large at all. (not to mention that ending)

I would say ME2 is the best, then ME3 (if you discount the ending) and then ME1.

but all of the ME games are great in there own way but as a complete package there brilliant if you do not mind drinking yourself to sleep over the ME3 ending.

ME has its annoyances, but I still think it's a good game to play, both for gameplay and story. Gameplay has improved dramatically in the sequels, although ME does have one positive: you don't have to deal with stripping away defenses to use powers. While that has arguably made combat more tactical in the sequels, it can be quite annoying on higher difficulties.

Exactly.

I'm disappointed they went in the direction they did with the series.

No universal cool downs
Skill points were actually skill points
Ammo was ammo not powers and thermal clips
No Halo health bar
Enemy shields and armor didn't stop biotics or tech powers
I didn't have to be plastered to a wall for 75% of the game just to survive
You could have alien sex twice in one playthrough

ME1 the best there was, the best there is, and the best there ever will be.

I loved the story of ME1, but after playing ME2 and ME3, going back to ME1 with that clunky gameplay and inventory system makes me.... ugh. Frustrated. To say the least.

The story is still among the finest I've found in any video game.

So... "hate" it? No, not at all. Get frustrated with it, especially the 23rd time the Mako won't go up this stupid hill to get this stupid objective? Yes.

I do actually... it's called booze :wizard:

Isn't that short-term memory wipe? Generally wiping memory when booze concentration is high.
Not that I tried that myself - I don't consume alcohol, but I had enough contacts with those who did.

Use rapid transit on Citadel, much faster.

I can beat it for you. After I will beat Insanity for my friend. There is only Noveria left...

The storytelling of mass effect 1 and RPG mechanics are what made it, not the gameplay. If you're not a fan of traditional RPGs you simply won't like it.

I didn't hate it. The gameplay was fine and the story has got to be the best work of BioWare but that was jjust it. The gameoplay was JUST fine. ME2's UI was MUCH better. It's story may have been filler but it was still better than ME1's gameplay. Honestly I was hoping for a mix bewteen ME1 and ME2 for ME3 but we just got ME2 again with a story that made zero sense with EVEN LESS dialogue options.

MAss Effect 3 could have been game fothe century had EA not squeezed at the deadline. If thedevs an extra year they'd have come up with a better non photoshopped face for Tali and proabbly a better explanation than we kill you so we don't kill you.

ME1 will always be my favourite of the trilogy (with 3 coming in a close second, and 2 being way down the list). Reason: immersion and narrative and storytelling.

I remember when I bought ME1. I would take long breaks in between because of the boring gameplay mechanics and terrible animations. Eventually I fell in love with the game's story and theme so much that all else seemed tolerable. However, if ME1 had ME3 combat... my mind would have been blown away.

ME1 is still my favorite game in the series.

The combat was kind of fail especially because of tje crosshairs. Most people just remember ME1 for the amazing the story and plot twists.

I loved ME1 and I liked the ammo cool down thing because later in the game you got materials that allowed for the weapons to never overheat. That was awesome. I also liked the ability to put armor on your characters that actually looked like they were trying to protect themselves not only from the elements but from damage too.

ME2 if you took say Miranda or Samara or Jack into a alien environment that either had no oxygen or a atmosphere that was toxic to biological life they didn't suffer any detrimental effects to exposed skin, eyes or anything like that. The suspension of disbelief went right out the window. The 'unique look' explanation didn't fly with me in that game and it doesn't fly with me in ME3. For instance in ME3 on the mission right after the prologue where you meet up with Liara there is no real atmosphere on that planet. However Liara is wearing a breather mask over her mouth and yet when you are on the surface of the planet Liara suffers no side effects to her exposed skin.

Again suspension of disbelief right out the window and it's not plausible or possible to have any part of your skin exposed to a vacuum of a planet with no atmosphere. It's been a proven scientific fact.

So yeah... I enjoyed ME1 much much more than the second two games.

I certainly don't hate it. It's an amazing game and I remember it fondly. However, I will admit that the combat is hard to get into after playing 2 and 3. Hell, I even keep trying to roll around when playing 2.

The only thing ME1 suffers from NOW, is that it is dated - primarily the combat system - but the story? Probably the most engaging of the series. To me, it has a sense of urgency; more so than ME3, in which Earth is hanging on your every move.

To ME1 is an opus...but now tainted by the conclusion of the story. And ME2, is overall the best of the series.

I don't hate it , but outside of the main plot I find it very bland and generic. The plot itself is really good, but all those filler planets are just there to pad what is a very short game.

It's twice the game ME2 or ME3 is, combined.

That's quadruple the game.

But I do think it's overrated by many here.
Fun game overall, but has a lot of issues.

I don't know, how you can hat ME1. Sure, it wasn't perfect (combat system wasn't as good as in ME2/ME3, inventory was too complicated, MAKO controlls were not optimised) but the story, characters, decisions were epic. And I liked that you had more RPG elements in it.

OP I really hope you are, ME1 was the most amazing of all 3 in my opinion when considered as a whole.

If they remade it down the line with the engine and effects of ME3 it would probably be the highest quality sci fi game ever made.
