I actually had no problems with ME1, framerate aside. Best ME to this day.

This.
Actually I really liked ME1. In ME1 you could play a biotic and spam powers without problems, in me2 the global cooldowns are horrible.

I love ME, it really is a great space opera. It's got some problems, but I was willing to overlook them because I enjoyed playing it. I found ME2 underwhelming. I'm not a big fan of GoW type cover-based combat systems. In fact I was so underwhelmed with ME2 I wasn't planning to buy ME3. My son picked it up for the PS3, so I've been playing it some on that system. Maybe its better on PC? I guess I am about 1/3 of the way through it. I don't find it very interesting or enjoyable to play. I keep telling myself I should finish it to see what all the fuss is about, but I doubt I ever will.

Loved the story and characters in the first one, but the gameplay, environments, and some of the art was terrible. I usually just play through the main missions whenever i replay it. The rest is just so tedious.

Exactly.

I'm disappointed they went in the direction they did with the series.

No universal cool downs
Skill points were actually skill points
Ammo was ammo not powers and thermal clips
No Halo health bar
Enemy shields and armor didn't stop biotics or tech powers
I didn't have to be plastered to a wall for 75% of the game just to survive
You could have alien sex twice in one playthrough

ME1 the best there was, the best there is, and the best there ever will be.

This so much. Buiiotics in ME3 - OK
Biotics in ME2 - f*cking useless
Biotics in ME1 - scary sh!t, you could kill an entire army with just warp + singularity as a skilled Biotic.

But, how do you have Alien Sex twice?! There is the typical Sex before end mission, and then what?

You could also hook up with the Consort, if you made the right decisions.

You're not the only one, but most people I know in real life say ME1 was more worthwhile. Here's a pretty prime example of why I loved ME1 best of all:

Mass Effect 1 was awesome. My only problem in the game was the horrible audio & synching issues on the PC version.

I'm replaying Mass Effect 1 right now. A lot combat felt more challenging than me2 and me3. and I like the open wordiness the Mako allows for, also the Citadel feels larger because of lay out in me2 the excuse was they were still rebuilding. But in three I was expecting the size of citadel to rival that of me1. There are more side mission but the side missions are shorted and use the same repeated maps...

Sorry bud, ME1 is pretty much the greatest thing ever.

I personally find the horrible frame rate to be part of its charm :P

The entire trilogy is great from start to finish, but none of the later two games can match the charm, the classic sci-fi polish, and the evocation of wonder, excitement, and discovery that Mass Effect 1 had. It has its unique charm in spite of its gameplay, which can still hold its own against some of the other mediocre TPS's that are have been out in the market. ME2 was more gameplay-oriented, but it was sufficient enough to represent itself as the universe of Mass Effect in its entirety. Mass Effect 3 made a healthy compromise between story and gameplay, but it still doesn't beat ME1 in its charm.

So, no, I do not share the sentiments of the OP. I in fact love ME1 and will always cherish it, for it is the game that brought me to this franchise.

Hates the whole game? There aren't many, though there are plenty of people who hate the cooldowns, or the inventory, or the pointless driving around, or the gameplay in general, or several of these.

I'll count myself among the group that had issue some of those things without hating the game.  They do make it more of a chore to play through after playing ME2 and ME3

ME1 is the best game ive ever played, by far. ive played it atleast 30 times excluding the hundreds of tims i played through eden prime and restarted becasue i thought my nose looked way to big.

ME2 seems more like a TPS spinoff to what ME1 was. i wouldnt recommend ME2 to anyone unless they already played all the better games.

ME3 is the game ME2 should have been. then ME4(which would be ME3) should have been a more specific renining of the what ME3 gave us. thers a few things that bug me about ME3, considering its biowares third attempt at making a TPS/RPG or whatever. and it defineately let me down in a few spots. the ending is terrible, and theres other things to me that are equally as terrible. like the journal and dialogue seems pointless.

id say i love ME1, hate ME2, and i think ME3 is pretty good.

Mass Effect 1 is an awful cover shooter.
Mass Effect 2 is a great cover shooter.

ME2 cut out a lot of ME1's annoyances. Everything is faster, neater, more intelligent and to the point. As for the RPG mechanics they are largely the same in all three games. Put more points into the skills you want to use to kill bad guys. Enjoy yourself. Grab me if you want to play real RPGs sometimes.

decent game (played it when it came out), nothing spectacular, ending wasn't my cup of tea. elevator scenes were frustrating, gamplay mechanics weren't very solid. it's all about the story. a little overhyped in my opinion.

I hate mass effect 1 because it forgets how to be fun. It may have great story and decent characters, but one aspect alone cannot carry a game, it must also be enjoyable to play, which it is not.

Combat is retardedly easy, unless the game glitches and your attacks either A. powers miss the target from a sudden and unexplained target shift, or B. Guns stop working as in the fire rate is so high that the gun begins buffering and the shoots miss or do a fraction of damage.

And the mako, why oh why did you have to make the mako an integral part of the plot for ME1. I hate it, I really hate it, so much so that during my current replays I don't even do the exploration missions, I just make a B line towards the enemy bases and try to find the paths that don't end with me going over a mountain and falling backwards cause the make got stuck in the cliff face. And why does repairing it stop me from moving, calling off the repairs to move out of the way, and take so long that I'm dead from a colossus cause I picked repair instead of jump.

Gameplay and Story need to come together to make a great game, Me2 had this, Me3 also has this, but ME1 to me is a half-broken game. Same with games that have great combat but a retarded story, it makes me feel like I'm playing a half-finished game.
