ME1 was the only RPG in the series.
Mind you I dont hate the other games but they appeal to a different user base than Bioware's previous works
Am I the only one who hates ME1?

Hated the mako and the planets that the mako landed on. Hated the graphical and gameplay glitches, and the brain dead squad AI that got themselves killed and would constantly try to shoot through walls. I will be a happy camper the day they rebuild ME1 with a better gameplay and graphics engine, while still keeping the original story intact. Maybe as part of a "Trilogy Pack" for Mass Effect. Would be awesome.
Says who? ME1 was orginally produced with help from Microsoft. If it were remade by Bioware/EA this time with EA financing it instead and with a different engine, who is to say it couldn't make the jump to PS3. Bioware then could release a patch so you could import the character into ME2 on the PS3. Just an idea and I would be first in line to buy it, although I highly doubt EA would want to go through the expense to completely rebuild an older title, regardless of how popular it is. *sighs, dreams*

From a technical standpoint, this is trivially true. The voice acting wasn't as good. The music was more uneven (and there wasn't enough of it, so you got to hear that same damn "creepy" theme from Peak 15 every time you went into a building on an uncharted world), although "Vigil" is one of the standout pieces of the series. Animations weren't as well done as in the later games, and there were a lot fewer of them. Assets were reused all over the place, especially for the weapons and the environment.
From a story perspective, I was annoyed that the game's basic outline employed the stereotypical "standard BioWare story" a la KotOR or Jade Empire. Its appeal was definitely wearing thin by that point; ME2's character-driven story was superior. There were plot holes, some of which were rather major (you could drive the SR-1 through the most egregious one, Tali's little adventure). Some of the things that happened mostly made sense from the conventions of the genre, not intrinsically, which was a weakness. And the whole false urgency that pervaded the story - a "race against time" in which there were no penalties for going slowly and prospecting for light metals or League of One medallions - irked me as well.
The characters didn't really have enough depth to them, nor were they particularly personable; conversations hadn't actually been written like conversations yet, so most people ended up being a walking Codex (Tali and Kaidan being the worst offenders). Ashley was probably the most interesting and deep character of the squadmates. It's a little telling that some fans even felt that Saren got a more interesting character than some of your team (his character being fleshed out over four total confrontations, two of which aren't even face-to-face and only one of which was an actual involved conversation). Also, honestly, the game just isn't very funny, and not just by comparison with ME2 and ME3 (two of the more hilarious major game releases of all time); Kaidan has a few decent lines ("We're going to need a bigger boot" and "Way to go, Team Milky Way") but everything else said by basically everybody else is more or less played straight. Hell, he's even funnier than Joker, who doesn't seem to do much wisecracking except a stale joke about Noverian bureaucracy.
I think everything that needs to be said about combat has already been said. Same with the skill tree for Shepard's and squadmates' powers.
Even though I think it's something of a chore to play now, the first Mass Effect game is still one of my favorite games of all time; at the time, it was insanely fun to play, and it created an intellectual property into which I've sunk immense amounts of my free time (and a fair amount of my non-free time, derp). It just doesn't measure up to the later games in the trilogy.

EA can't remake ME1 though, even if they want to. BioWare doesn't own the rights to Mass Effect (game), Microsoft does.CARL_DF90 wrote...

You either have rose-tinted glasses, or you played ME1 before KOTOR.
Steps the protagonist in both games take to reach the ending:
Step 1: show that you're capable of joining an elite organization(whether intended or not)
Step 2: join said organization
Step 3: go to planet X to find a clue that points to a hidden location
Step 4: go to planet Y to find a clue that points to a hidden location
Step 5: go on a forced detour to a location where you fight a rogue member of said organization
Step 6: go to planet Z to find a clue that points to a hidden location
Step 6: go to hidden location
Step 7: go to another railroaded location and have a final battle against a rogue member of said organization
Step 8: prepare for battle against an enemy that lies outside the galaxy's edge.
The only difference between KOTOR and ME1's plot is that, in KOTOR, there is an additional step between 3 and 4 where you go to planet W to find another clue.

True enough, but still for every legal road block there are loop-holes. You just need to find them. Whether or not EA would care to do so is another matter entirely.

Whats funny is that chart is slightly inaccurate.
You were war hero in KOTOR, just like in ME1. The only difference between the two is that you are aware of it from the very start of ME1.
In KOTOR and ME1, you become the captain of a starship after you join an elite organization. In ME1, the captain of the Normandy before you become a Spectre is Anderson, not Shepard.

Climbing over nearly impassable mountain ranges, in a bouncy, unruly vehicle that regularly tips over, or does a complete 360 degree turn... again and again and again.. planet after planet.
Constantly re-used generic bases, mines and habitats on endless planets, with the same old routine... find minerals, investigate anomaly, kill bad guys amidst a load of crates... then repeat...
Game regularly crashes during dialogue ever since I upgraded my Nvidia drivers.
Cover system and squad commands are rudimentary at best.
Crazy cooldowns on powers.
...... And I absolutely love the game, for all it's faults
LIke the poster above me said, there's an intimacy about ME1, and a very special atmosphere that was never exactly recaptured in either of the sequels. The main missions are absolutely superb in my opinion, and more than make up for the filler content in the form of generic planet exploration.
Ok, the storyline is not exactly super-original, but it's carried off with such flair and panache, and the characters you meet along the way, and scenarios you encounter are unforgettable.
I rember how I felt when visiting the Citadel for the first time, and just being dumbstruck by the sheer size and execution of the thing.... was a jaw-dropping experience.. that whole early section of the game, within the Citadel with all the side quests felt like it's own self-contained game.. I felt like a detective, tracking down clues, talking to suspects.

Wow, the gameplay was just terrible. TERRIBLE. Especially the cooldown ammo mechanic and those horrible crosshairs. Its only saving grace was the story and awesome dialogue. But other than that, I hated it. It was a chore to play.
I do not know. I consider ME1 the best of the series and one of the best games ever made. ME2 is the worst of the series, mostly because the incredibly stupid main story.

I don't hate ME1. But I don't like it as much as I do ME 2 and most of ME 3. My biggest annoyance with it is the sniper rifle scope. A well trained sniper, which an infiltrator marine commander would be, would not have that much movement of the scope. It makes headshotting almost impossible at any decent range. Also, the driving controls are so damn touchy that you try to ajust course slightly to avoid an obstacle you end up almost heading back the way you came. I could quite easily pive without the driving sequences, both in ME 1 and ME 2. Another thing with the driving. Everytime you get into a Mako, or Hammerhead in 2, you have your squad with you, so what's with the driving and firing? Are my two squadmates incapable of doing either of these things?
But those aren't gamebreakers for me, so I'll keep working through ME1 so I can then import to 2 then import to 3.
